AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Labor says the state’s unemployment rate ticked up two-tenths of a percent last month to 7.4 percent.

The rate is up from 7.2 percent in April, but down from 7.7 percent in May of last year.

The state says the number of people working in Maine is relatively unchanged. The increase in the unemployment rate is because more people are looking for work.

Nationally, the U.S. unemployment rate for May was 8.2 percent.

The unemployment rate for the six New England states averaged 6.8 percent. Vermont had the lowest rate at 4.6 percent while Rhode Island had the highest at 11 percent.

    1. Here’s an interesting fact:

Six months ago Maine had the 15th lowest unemployment rate among the states.  That is 35 states (plus the District of Columbia) had worse unemployment rates than Maine.

This month Maine is 27th.  Only 23 states (plus D.C.) are worse off than we are.

Some of the states that have caught up to us and passed us are:  Utah, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Alaska, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Texas, Delaware, New Mexico.

The economy is getting better in the country,….but not here.

Mr. LePage’s policies don’t seem to be working.  We need to stop sending yes -men and yes-women legislators to Augusta who support this disaster.

  1. The Maine Department of Labor says the state’s unemployment rate ticked up two-tenths of a percent last month to 7.4 percent.

The only accomplishment Paul LePage has yet to take credit for since putting out that open for business sign.

  2. Didn’t the guv say just a week ago that Maine’s economy was improving. How is an increase in unemployment rate a sign of an improving economy? Well, we get what we’ve come to expect from this poor excuse for a leader. His only sign of an improving economy was the start of “tourist season” – mostly low paying jobs for students on summer break.

    1. Actually the private sector IS doing pretty well. Corporate profits are at record levels, corporations have trillions of dollars in cash, and since Bush was replaced by Obama private job losses of 700,000 have become job gains of 100,000-2000,000. Obama’s point was probably that the public sector of teachers, police, and firemen have experienced  job losses of 600,000 over the past 3 years.
So, in contrast to the public sector, the private sector is doing fine.

  3. We could tick it up a little more by adding his daughter to the unemployed, and doing away with her “token” job.

  4. Not surprised at all. When you have a Governor that is incompetent and wants Maine to stay in the Bush Depression, this is what you get. Thanks LaBuffoon. Glad all my children left this state years ago.

  5. Last Saturday Paul Richard LePage in his radio address to Mainers informed all of us that Maine’s economy was picking up. He cited an increase in campground reservations as an indicator of Maine’s economic resurgence. He also went on to tell us that Maine’s unemployment rate had dropped , “It’s clear, our unemployment rate is declining and more jobs are being created” Lepage told us last Saturday. Of course like most things LePage tells us it was not true. The fact of the matter is that while unemployment rates nationally are declining Maine’s is actually on the rise. The rate in December of 2011 was 7 percent. It has been growing steadily  ever since. Today it stands at 7.4 percent. Contrast Maine’s rising unemployment rate with neighboring New Hampshire’s 5 percent or even the Mass. rate of 6 percent. Our radical right tea party parrot friends love to call Vermont a socialist state, however Vermont’s unemployment rate currently stands at 4.3 percent. Governor LePage loves to tell us when things in Maine are above the National or Regional average like in the case of “welfare”. New England’s unemployment rate is 6.8 percent well below Maine’s 7.4 percent. In 2010 Candidate Paul Richard LePage went from one end of Maine to the other telling us that HE could create JOBS, JOBS, JOBS. The fact is that there are less JOBS, JOBS, JOBS in Maine today then there were on the day Paul Richard LePage took office. As the most recent unemployment numbers show Maine’s unemployment rate is growing not declining as LePage would like us to believe. Just where are all of those JOBS, JOBS, JOBS you promised Governor?

    1. { He cited an increase in campground reservations as an indicator of Maine’s economic resurgence. }

Thats the Foreclosure Victims new Residences!

  6. The Transportation Bill needs to be reauthorised by July 1st so that construction companies could get paid. It was passed in the Senate However Bohenoer says ” {It needs to be done right not fast. }  The house went on Vacation for a week!

Out of the other side of his mouth comes , ” President Obamas Policies are creating Uncertainty”

    “”””Where are the jobs?””””

So don’t take it personal Maine It is a not a Maine plot to destroy the economy-

    It’s National!

  7. people are getting jobs while collecting unemployment, i as an employer have been shocked by what i get in place of applications and resumes, a very common question is can i work under the table because i get unemployment?, i refuse to entertain such a request and now feel that i am being ripped off in the form of unemployment contributions i pay! GET A JOB  AND GET OFF U.E.

  8. FACT CHECK:
According to the article above,  “The state says the number of people working in Maine is relatively unchanged. The increase in the unemployment rate is because more people are looking for work.”

From the state’s web site, “The unemployment rate rise in May is primarily due to a decline in employment.”

Somebody in the LePage administration is monkeying with the facts.
