NEW YORK — Police say a former television screenwriter was arrested after punching his poodle in the face so hard that it died of a brain injury.

The New York Post reported Sunday that 51-year-old Ted Shuttleworth was arrested Saturday at his home in Queens. The Post says Shuttleworth punched his dog on May 29 because he was angry with the animal. The dog weighed about four pounds.

A spokesman for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the dog sustained a traumatic brain injury.

The newspaper reports Shuttleworth is a former TV writer who once worked for “NYPD Blue.” He could face up to a year in prison.

His wife tells the newspaper that the dog’s death was a “horrible accident.”

    1. Just what does it matter whose dog it was? Most people consider pets as more than just property. This was cruelty, plain and simple.

In the NY courts, pets are still considered chattel, just property with no real value, so if it had been someone else’s dog, they wouldn’t receive any real compensation. I guess you hold to that archaic belief too. Often, animal beaters consider their wives as property too,
and are willing to beat them as well when they get peed off. They should just find some sheetrock instead.

  1. A horrible accident???

Sounds rather deliberate to me. Run free,  little pup. There’s no cruelty at the Rainbow Bridge.

  2. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of violence.  A 4 month old puppy ?  The dog must of been a monster !  An accident ?  sounds like his wife has been on the other end of his wrath. Let’s hope he isn’t allowed to own another animal.

    1. I think the article stated it was a 4 pound dog not a 4 month old puppy.
Regardless of the age of this poor pup, I hope this jackwad is banned from ever owning another animal! Anyone that would hit a defenseless animal has some serious issues.
