HERMON, Maine — A 51-year-old local man was taken to the hospital Monday evening after his motorcycle struck a Jeep coming out of a shopping center parking lot.

David McCarty of Hermon suffered an ankle injury and scrapes to his arm in the accident and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Penobscot County sheriff’s Deputy Jay Hallett said.

The driver of the Jeep Liberty, Vicki Gonyea, 53, was not hurt, Hallett said.

The accident happened about 6:15 p.m., when Gonyea drove out of the parking lot of Danforth Plaza and into the path of McCarty’s 2008 Suzuki motorcycle, Hallett said.

He said the sun was in Gonyea’s eyes as she turned left and she did not see the motorcyclist, who was heading toward Bangor and was unable to avoid striking the back of her SUV.

Damage to Gonyea’s Jeep was minimal, Hallett said. McCarty’s motorcycle, however, had extensive damage, including bent front forks.

  1. People please.. WATCH out for the bikers.  To not be able to enjoy the ride, WE have to watch out for YOU. The ones who drive but are not really there. “Oh, I”m Sorry, I didn’t see you. The sun, the phone,  Mc D’s. ”  WHILE DRIVING, PLEASE PLEASE WATCH OUT for everyone else You might kill someone you know.

    1. It’s a two way street I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the biker be the issue on the road as well. The bottom line is everyone should pay attention because there are idiots on the road no matter what they are driving.

    2. Everybody should be watching for everyone, doesn’t matter if you got 2, 3 4 or more wheels. I am tired of bikers thinking they are getting singled out when yet they are plenty of them, just as well as passenger cars/trucks who don’t pay attention, lead police on high speed chases, etc. There is no exception to the rule.

      1. The difference is, when you have 4 or more wheels, you also have that thing called a shell around you and most of the time air bags and restraints.  Bikes are also a lot harder to see since they are smaller in size.  So yes, we do feel singled out since all the odds seem against us.  It doesn’t cost you anything to look twice, save a life.

        1. Everyone should pay attention and watch their speed period. I look according to what the law tells me before pulling out in traffic, if a Motorcycle wants to come zipping along and loose control in the ditch 30 MPH over the speed limit it is their problem and my sympathy would be the same if it was someone with 4 wheels

          1. Where in this article does it say he was going 30 MPH over the speed limit. It is simple people like you that kill bikers by not looking twice before pulling out in traffic. Pull out in front of me and i’ll follow you unti you stop and explain it to in my words.

          2. Did I say this is what the article said? Can you recite the comment and directly put it to this article?

  2. Motorcyclists have to assume that every car is going to pull out in front of you or cut you off.   That’s the only way to survive with so many distracted drivers on the road.

  3. I am so thankful that Dave will be ok!  He is such a wonderful guy and I think the world of him and his family.  God definitely had a close eye on Dave that day :-)

  4. At 6:15pm the day before the longest day of the year, the sun is still quite high in the sky. Just saying.
