PITTSFIELD, Maine — After two rounds of applications, SAD 53 was unable to find a suitable candidate for superintendent.

The current superintendent, Michael Gallagher, is retiring. His last day is June 30.

The SAD 53 board of directors voted during its meeting Tuesday night to hire an interim superintendent. Jan Laux of Pittsfield, who is on the board of directors, will serve as interim superintendent for a period no longer than 15 months until a permanent replacement can be found.

“Mr. Laux will begin meeting with administrators this week to transition into the role of interim superintendent,” Paul Williams, chairman of the board of directors, said in a statement.

SAD 53 serves Burnham, Detroit and Pittsfield.

Next summer, you can replace “SAD 53” with “Brewer” since Brewer voters decided it would be an outstanding idea to make the new superintendent reside in Brewer within 3 years of accepting the job.  Reminder….there are fewer and fewer people who want superintendent positions.

    1. That seems a little backwards. Why limit options that are already limited? Maybe you’ll be fortunate and find a good one that’s been quietly becoming an awesome superintendent while living right under your nose for the last three years. It sounds a little optimistic, but good luck with that!
