LEWISTON, Maine — The U.S. Postal Service says First Class mail deliveries to some parts of Maine that used to take one day will soon take two or three.
The Postal Service is changing its service standards beginning July 1. Maine USPS spokesman Tom Rizzo says delivery times are being changed as fewer people use the mail and the Postal Service tries to save money. It’s projected to run a $14 billion deficit this year.
The Lewiston Sun Journal said that now, a First Class letter mailed in Portland arrived in Aroostook County the next day. But after July 1 it could take longer.
But one-day delivery within certain groups of ZIP codes will still take a day.
The change will mean fewer trucks and fewer trips between Maine’s two processing locations.
That’s too bad. I think people should use the USPS more often. A letter in the mail from a friend or relative means so much more than a simple email or a text.

I love getting letters or a postcard or just a note saying hi instead of the usual junk, junk, bills, and junk. And I like to think the people I mail love it too :)

That’s great! I send postcards whenever I travel and I’ve lately been getting into mailing Polaroids (or any photograph). You’re right-who doesn’t like getting a card or a letter in the mail? It’s nice to take your time and mail something thoughtful and most people certainly appreciate it. 45c is not a lot to spend for that (especially if it’s to your mother!).
That link you included is great! I have heard that you can send ANYTHING in the US Mail but never thought about a ball or a flip-flop! Just putting stamps on the item and mailing it-try THAT with FedEx or UPS!
Exactly! Which is why this news is kind of a bummer.
As a side note, I also wish more online merchants would offer a choice. I’d choose USPS over the UPS deliveries I tend to get. UPS blows, they don’t even deliver on Saturdays!
p.s. Doesn’t it bug you when people gripe about the cost of stamps and how it’s always going up? LOL!

It’s a vicious circle. I still use the USPS for many things, but I think I might be a dinosaur. I do like to send Polaroids through the mail like a postcard. That’s pretty cool….

No – its our fault for not allowing them to close all of the underutilized and redundant postal facilities that they wanted to unload.
So the people fight to keep the distribution center open,just to get the mail later than usual.Fight for some ones rights so we would not have to wait,only to wait.
Kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Lack of good service is pretty much the original problem to begin with. Had you rather be working for postal employee wages and benefits or unemployment?
Thanks, Congress basically talked you out of some of the cut backs and scale backs, this is being one of them the time it takes to deliver mail in state. So now I get to pay the same rate for less service and I don’t care if it is cheaper then UPS or Fed Ex, we paid our dues for the increase and in return the USPS still cries poverty and reduces our service which clearly this all isn’t working out.
When Hampden was on the chopping block we heard this line, Hampden stays open we still hear it, obviously the USPS doesn’t have an intelligent brain heading the operation, again everyone got lied to
Most things are faster nowadays. This sounds like a step backward. In the 70’s they could deliver a letter in one day, in 2012 it will take two or three? I don’t think it will help business at all.

I Email anything when I care about speed, but I don’t care if it takes weeks for a bill to reach me…
This is more of your govenment at work. When they first started talking about closing the Hampden facility it was said that if the facility closed mail sent from Bangor would go to Portland before coming back to Bangor, resulting in a couple of days delay.
Now that Hampden is remaining open it’s still going to result in a couple of days delay, but this time the reason is because there will be fewer trucks making the trips.
Get used to it. The government is going to do whatever they want to do, and if we try to stand in their way they’ll penalize us for it. And there’s nothing we can do about it.

It’s not just “your government at work.” What’s also at work is that more people are using email and receiving and paying bills over the internet. Downloading music and movies, too. THAT is what’s reducing their services.
