WALDOBORO, Maine — A fire Thursday night that destroyed a lobster boat being stored in Waldoboro is under investigation as an arson, according to Sgt. Ken Grimes of the Maine fire marshal’s office.

The fire, which was reported at about 10 p.m. Thursday, was at 3600 Friendship Road, which is a property owned by Donald Simmons Jr., according to Darryl McKenney, who works in the town’s assessing department. The lobster boat, which was being stored in a 40-by-66-foot steel quonset hut, was destroyed. The boat was owned by Daniel Reed Jr. of Damariscotta, according to Grimes. The fire also heavily damaged the building.

Grimes said the fire appeared to have started aboard the boat, but he couldn’t provide any details beyond that. Grimes said there was some insurance on the building, but he was unsure whether the boat was insured. The fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal’s office, Maine Marine Patrol, Knox County Sheriff’s Department and Waldoboro Police Department.

No one has been charged in the incident and Grimes would not comment about whether there are any suspects. Grimes said investigators are soliciting information from the public about what may have happened. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Maine State Police Communication Center at 624-7076 or an anonymous tip line handled by the fire marshal’s office at 888-870-6162.

  1. The Wild West here in eastern Maine. Next thing you know they’ll be shooting each other. Oh that’s right they did that last year. Give a man a lobster licence and a gun and he’ll use it. The gun that is.
