WATERVILLE, Maine — A Waterville woman who caused a six-car pileup in March is facing a felony charge after she was indicted in superior court on Thursday.
Nancy Hazard, 43, was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of aggravated driving to endanger, a Class C felony, according to Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.
Hazard was driving on College Avenue in March when the SUV she was driving struck four cars waiting at an intersection. One vehicle was pushed into a sixth car. Six people were injured in the crash.
Acting Kennebec County District Attorney Alan Kelley said speed and negligence were the main factors in the grand jury’s indictment.
“Based on the investigation this was a crash where Ms. Hazard was traveling at an excessive rate of speed at the time of impact,” explained Kelley.
Reconstruction reports showed Hazard was traveling between 60 and 80 mph when the accident took place, according to Rumsey.
Hazard had indicated to police she had no memory of the events of the crash during the investigation, Rumsey said.
Once police were informed by the court that Hazard had been indicted, an arrest warrant was issued, and Officer Galen Estes took her into custody without incident.
Toxicology reports indicated Hazard had no drugs or alcohol in her system at the time of the accident.
She spent 10 days recovering from chest and back injuries at Eastern Maine Medical Center following the crash. Karl Andresen, 69, was the only other driver in the crash who was hospitalized. He spent two days at EMMC with a cracked cervical vertebra, eight broken ribs and a concussion.
Hazard was booked into the Kennebec County Jail, where bail was set at $2,000 cash or $20,000 surety, Rumsey said. She remained there Friday morning.
If convicted, Hazard could spend up to five years in prison.

Hazard is a hazard.
She kinda looks like Daisy on the British comedy “Keeping Up Appearances.”
Maybe it is her and she thought she was back in Jolly Old England.
Yeah…she sort of does, doesnt she? I love that show! Hyacinth (Patricia)was hilarious and a great actress.
Going that rate of speed on College Avenue I hope she gets the maximum allowed by law.
She should never be allowed to drive again. Ever.
In fact she should never be allowed to ride in a car. Make her walk.
Throw the book at her!!!!!Permanantly revoke her license, 5 yrs in jail, financial restitution for property and injuries, heck make her pay for emergency response.
Is she from Hazard County ?
OVERHAUL THE DRIVER LICENSING PROCESS! How many more are going to hurt, maimed, or killed before it happens? There are way too many people who drive, who shouldn’t be behind the wheel!
Or perhaps if police were actually patrolling to catch people driving dangerously.
Why is it that women feel they need to drive SUVs?
seriously, 9 out of 10 suvs on the road are driven by women.
most of them don’t comprehend the physics involved in driving something that heavy down the road and what happens in an accident with something that large.
I’m all for driving what you like, but at least try to understand what you’re driving and the consequences of screwing up whilst driving a massive vehicle.
Well, I’m female and have driven SUVs in the past (downgraded to a smaller car for economical purposes). I’ve also driven dump trucks, motorcycles, backhoes, excavators, you name it. Some women are fine, but I do have to admit to seeing FAR too many women attempting to park their large vehicles in front of my office and I often shake my head and say “geesh, if you can’t park the vehicle, don’t drive the thing!!” Not to mention the ones you meet in town who think they are taking up the whole road and decide to “share” YOUR lane with you.
good for you. seriously though, next time you drive down the road take a quick mental survey of how many suvs are driven by which gender, then ask yourself if the people driving those suvs seem capable of handling them.
or even look like they actually need a “sports utility” vehicle. It’s a status symbol for some, sadly enough. Thank God this woman didn’t kill someone.
You can’t JUDGE a person just by looking at them. What is wrong with you? Did you learn nothing in Kindergarten?
Yes, he learned that ingesting enough BPA causes girls to grow little beards. Ancient Legacy, you’re sounding more and more like Paulie all the time…just plain dumb.
….
i don’t really care what people drive, but it does seem that women drive suvs more than men. just sayin. It’s not sexist, it’s an observation.
try it.

Excuse me? Sexist much?! I drive an SUV because I have 3 kids and the car seat laws mandate that I use car seats that won’t fit 3 across in a standard size vehicle. SMH
must be a medical condition no drugs or alcohol and cant remember it yeah i want her back driving a vech NOT lucky she didn”t kill someone
Yeah, that was a stupid statement.Everyone knows that women cant drive .Men cant cook either…sheesh
Damn, someone slammed into my vehicle driving at an excessive rate of speed, caused almost $ 10,000 worth of damage to my suv in Eastport, Me, almost killed my daughter and I, and got off scot free..Hmm, maybe she should have done this in Eastport. If the vehicles were native owned, I doubt she would have been charged.Way to go Officer Preston..
.
my, aren’t we all compassionate this morning. Did anyone stop to think that she might have had a medical issue such as narcolepsy, a TIA, or a stroke? Did anyone from the medical community bother to check this out? If so, did the paper bother to report on what, if anything was found? While I sincerely feel for the victims in this case, just use some common sense for a minute; to hit this intersection at 60-80 mph you’d have to have homicidal rage (mentally unbalanced at least temporarily), a wish to die (again, medical issue), a black out (see above conditions), or some sort of a seizure (again, a medical condition). Equipment malfunction, maybe. All of the above could be, and should be thoroughly investigated. If she was just distracted, if would have been much much slower (I see it all the time on the highway). Again, I feel for the victims, and would want justice. But I also feel for Ms. Hazard, and hope to heck she gets a decent lawyer to defend her, and treatment for what ails her.
Yes, someone from the medical community did check her out and they believe she had a seizure. This prosecution is insane. What in the world is the Acting DA thinking here? Is he trying to show that he is tough on seizure sufferers?
….
I really fear for our future if people no longer respect the presumption of innocence in America. People just want to see other people be punished whether it is right or if it’s wrong. I guess maybe it has always been like that. I should add, just in case people assume, I have no idea who this lady is. I don’t know her and have never heard of her before. I just learned in Kindergarten that you shouldn’t judge people based on the way they look or make assumptions about them until I walk a mile in their shoes.
It’s so funny about the commerce secretary though… check this out!

She should have to pay for all the damages and cost to all these people who she hurt and destroyed their property (cars) and hospital costs. She had no memory of the events? Good excuse! OOO and license gone for life….she could do this again.
Hazard, Madoff,Kashkari. all fitting names
Something is missing from this story that was included in the story on the Morning Sentinel. The doctor who saw her after the crash believes she had a seizure.
If the Commerce Secretary of the USA can have a seizure and cause a car accident then why can’t a woman from Waterville, Maine?
I hope that she has a good Attorney representing her. Why was the seizure information left out of this article?
This is a travesty. There is absolutely nothing in this woman’s background to suggest she caused this to happen intentionally. I hope she gets a more refined test done, above and beyond an MRI, called a DTI (Diffusion Tensor Imaging).
If she was rich and powerful she would.
She PASSED the drug test! Maybe she had a hard life, did you ever stop to think of that? Man, people are ticking me off reading these comments. SMH
