WINTER HARBOR – Richard James Gerrish, 57, a resident of Hancock County, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in Winter Harbor. Richard was born Aug. 13, 1954, in Anchorage, Alaska, to Joseph and Grace (Harrington) Gerrish.
After graduating from Sumner High School, he joined the U.S. Army where he served as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. After returning to Maine, Richard continued to develop his natural inclination towards automobiles and construction.
He became a jack – and master -of-all-trades! Affectionately nicknamed “Gorilla,” he was known to all as a gentle, big man who would use these skills to assist any he knew in need. One of the ways Richard would nurture his interest in mechanics was by collecting contraptions and other devices of any sort. Richard’s “collection” was so large it required the use of not only his own, but also the borrowing of others property and buildings. In his free time, he enjoyed camping, fishing and picnics at Schoodic Point, painting landscapes on canvas, and working on and riding his Harley. Richard’s masculine and sturdy appearance also concealed a soft heart for their Pomeranian, who he would proudly take for walks – complete with her pink leash! He was a personable man of quiet, dry humor who looked forward to greeting his friends at the local grocery. Richard is also remembered by his family as a fantastic and gentle man who could give the greatest hugs.
Richard is survived by his wife, Debra “Debi” Gerrish at home in Winter Harbor; mother, Grace Gerrish of Winter Harbor; daughter, Ashley Bunker of Otis; brothers, Tommy Gerrish of Winter Harbor, and Michael Gerrish and wife, Missy, of Sullivan; sister, Cora Hendrickson and husband, Paul, of Sullivan, and Catherine Gerrish and partner, Mark Davis; five grandchildren, five nephews and three nieces. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph; father, Joseph; and brother, Russell. Richard’s family expresses a special thank you to Jane Louise. Knowing Richard was in the presence of someone so selfless and compassionate, during his final moments, is a gift of comfort to his family that is beyond words.
A memorial ceremony is scheduled 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at the Winter Harbor School gymnasium, Winter Harbor. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
