WASHINGTON — Four Maine police departments will be receiving a total of $625,000 in federal grants for community policing.

Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced the awards on Monday. The grants will cover 75 percent of salary and benefits for entry-level police officers hired under the program.

The senators said the York police department will receive $250,000, while departments in Cumberland, Madison and Yarmouth will each get $125,000.

  1. Before anyone gets too excited just remember that this money DECREASE’S at 30% per year until the Agencies have to pick-up the whole cost starting the 4th year. And Maine budget’s are forecasted 2 years out because of the State’s budget process.

  3. This is election year pork.  It’s a waste of money, and it actually drives a bill in the outyears!

    Why do we keep reelecting people who do this?  The same reason they do it…because it works!

  4. Wonder if the COPS will buy another Tank, missile equipped, 4 barrel 50 Caliber speed boat or a Predator Drone with missiles for parking infractions.. COPS have to throw this money in the sewer some way.
