ELLSWORTH, Maine — One motorist is dead and three others were hospitalized after a car and a truck pulling a camper collided around 5:30 p.m. Friday on Route 3.

Several witnesses reported the car’s driver repeatedly crossed the yellow line before colliding head-on with the Chevy S10 near the intersection of Happytown Farm Road, said Ellsworth police Sgt. Glenn Moshier. The car was totaled and Moshier said the driver died in the crash.

The occupants of the truck, two grandparents and their granddaughter, were brought to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Ellsworth Police and Fire departments, as well as Hancock County EMS, went to the scene. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to pry open the car’s door, where they discovered the driver dead inside.

By 6 p.m., Ellsworth Officer Chad Wilmot was reconstructing the accident. Police still were trying to identify the car’s driver.

Traffic was stalled in both directions on what is known as the Bucksport Road, which is State Route 3 and U.S. Route 1. Around 5:45 p.m., motorists were instructed to turn around. Moshier expected the road to be closed for up to two hours.

  1. Edit: One more time…..

This is a road I travel often and most people drive about 65mph on the road, the posted limit is 55 and if you are doing 55mph you are going to get passed. I normally do right around 65 myself but I’ve been passed even at that speed.

I hate to speculate if the driver was attempting to pass, was texting, was tired or had some sort of medical issue. The truth will come out after the investigation.

Sadly this most likely will not be the only traffic death in Maine this coming weekend as a lot of people are traveling for the 4th.

  2. What is up with all these deaths in Maine since Memorial Day? I keep thinking I’ve logged on to the Baltimore Sun, where “If it bleeds, it leads.”

    1. looks like the hubcap on the truck says GMC, and the style name on the side is much longer then S10. The writer of the article and I must be looking at a different truck.

    2. 1st off I want to say how horrible it is that a life was lost and I hope the grandparents and grandaughter make a quick recovery!!

I thought it was a GMC 1500 or a chevy silverado, the drivers side door is usually where it says silverado, theres a decal of some sort on the door  but who knows. Definately not an S10 its way too big, must just be an error.

      1.  Yea, I know there was an S10 in the accident, but its not the vehicle they mentioned it as.

  3. It was a Chevy s10 that crossed into the path of the full size truck not a car. Wabi’s website has a video that shows the s-10. BDN needs to do an edit job again

    1. the video is horrible! it looks like a woman was dead in the S-10. Sad if her family happen to be watching the 6 p.m. news when that story aired!

  4. The truck is a 3/4 ton heavy duty crew cab.  I own one and that is undoubtedly what saved the families lives…..  Gas guzzlers save lives.

    1. Since when is any news site 100% accurate anyway? the bdn doesn’t have the best track record for accurcy but i can think of far worse

      1. Callie,  I just read the article regarding Austin.  Our deepest sympathies go out to you and the rest of Austin’s Family.  We are so sorry for your loss!!!

  5. It does not matter how this occurred, people are still grieving this person. You said……..   “””I refuse to pass on condolences for anyone involved in accidents until after the investigation because a lot of the time, they don’t deserve it.””””” …………Now tell me who does not deserve it??  Just because someone dies and you do not know “how” does not mean you have to act a fool about it. Condolences are not given to the dead, they are given to the ones left behind, the ones who had no control over how their love one died.

I would like to offer my condolences  to the family, may your memories comfort you in the times ahead.
