SACO, Maine — A woman and her 3-year-old son escaped serious injury Thursday when they were struck by a vehicle while crossing Main Street, which is also Route 1, during afternoon rush hour, according to police.
Jessica Henry, 29, of Saco was pushing her child in a stroller when a car driven by Richard Mason, 80, of Gorham hit them in a crosswalk just before 4 p.m., according to Saco Deputy Chief Ray Demers.
Mason was not hurt in the crash, Demers said, while the boy suffered bruises and was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment and then released.
The woman suffered a head injury, Demers said, but did not require a trip to the hospital.
The accident remains under investigation, according to Demers, and it’s unknown whether Mason will face charges, he said.

80 yrs old and he hit them in a crosswalk..i hope charges are filed!!!!!!!!! The state of Maine needs to set up the game here and get with the program. Just like the article about speeding tickets are down, come on State start issuing tickets for crimes so crazy things will stop happening!!!!!!!!!
Since the state upped the speed limit to 75 north of Old Town the “new” speed limit seems to be 85 plus.
“Mason was not hurt in the crash” I hope not a car versus pedestrians.
Typical. Blame the pedestrian.
Walking is not a crime. In fact, when prudently crossing a crosswalk, the pedestrian is legally protected from blame. Over 30,000 people annually are killed by automobiles. Is it time to change our thinking?
How do we know she wasn’t halfway across the street street when she was hit? The article doesn’t say where in the street she was and anyone with an ounce of common sense slows down at cross walks.
take her child away? what would be your opinion had this been you and your child? as far as i can see she was not in the wrong. she was within the crosswalk, last i checked it is the law to stop for pedestrian’s in a crosswalk. she technically had the right of way. who’s to say she didnt look before crossing?
It is hard to cross the road down there in general. For example, the center of Scarborough has over 4 lanes of traffic traveling at least 35mph. There is not enough time to cross the road between lights. In Saco, the speed is no slower through the automobile dealership mile and the same 4 lanes of traffic. In spots between those places it’s 40mph. I could not imagine being 80 years old and trying to walk around town, or a mother of a young child. Cities and towns are not designed for pedestrians. One has to run and play Frogger to be a pedestrian down there.
