BATH, Maine — A veteran Maine state trooper convicted of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 14 has been sentenced to spend less than two years of a five-year jail sentence behind bars.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old Gregory Vrooman was sentenced last week to serve 21 months of a five-year sentence, with the remaining time suspended.

Vrooman, of Nobleboro, was convicted in April guilty of multiple counts related to unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

Prosecutors tell The Portland Press Herald that Vrooman’s lawyer has indicated that there will be an appeal.

The defense attorney had previously questioned the girl’s allegations.

Vrooman was assaulted in court by a Massachusetts man in April right before he was convicted.

  1. That’s it ?  Sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 14 and being  sentenced to
spend less than two years of a five-year jail sentence behind bars. What a slap in the face to all who advocate for protecting children.  Hopefully the  “jail experience” will be enhanced by other inmates.  Child molester + bad cop = no respect in prison…..

  2. BDN – by using the word “multiple” you down-played exactly how many counts he was convicted of.

never mind…it’s just another C&P from the Associated Press…good lord, BDN – this is Maine news and you didn’t even write your own article.

  3. From an earlier story…”Vrooman, a 24-year veteran of the Maine State Police who has been on unpaid administrative leave since his arrest in November 2010, was convicted of four counts of unlawful sexual touching, four counts of unlawful sexual contact and four counts of assault.”

12 counts against him and this is all he gets? What is wrong with Maine’s justice system? Drug dealers get longer sentences.

  4. I am disgusted! This man who was supposed to protect innocent little girls only got 21 months in jail?  That crap!  In the years he has been on duty, how many victims has he had?  I doubt this little girl was the first and only!  Lock him up and keep our daughters safe!

  5. He deserves the full 5 years behind bars!  Another trooper was given only days in a “supervised” low safehouse or some such place in Bangor and then the days were reduced because of “good behavior.”
The victims are left with scars for life.

  6. Nope, no special treatment in Maine at all….Didnt think so….Give me a freaken break

  7.  “Vrooman, of Nobleboro, was convicted in April guilty of multiple counts related to unlawful sexual contact with a minor.”

For this this convicted pedophile gets 21 months which translates to less than 19 with good behavior time.

The judge should be ashamed.  I know I (as a taxpayer) sure am.

  8. bad cop no doughtnut what a scumbag he should have gotten the max sentence or if i had my way the death penealty

  9. If we truly had ‘Equal Justice” and punishment for all, their would be a lot less of a cry for more time.  What was done is wrong, but its wrong no matter what gender commits the crime. Men, however get singled out for the most. Many, Many Men have gone to jail, and had their lives ruined. Some serving as long as twenty years, for a crime they did not commit, and were later found not guilty. Wonder how many Girls have been wrongly convicted in this present ‘Equal Justice for all’  system.  Its past time to demand that we are all treated equally.

  10. Men in prison don’t like child molesters. He’ll get his. If the guards put him in general population, he’ll be sexually assaulted as well. Couldn’t happen to a better person. Child molesters should just be put to death. There is no amount of rehabilitation for these pieces of garbage. They steal children’s innocence.
