BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man who forced his way into an acquaintance’s Ohio Street apartment and made himself comfortable on the couch was ultimately arrested after he assaulted the tenants, police said.
Joshua McAuliffe, 31, is facing charges of assault and burglary stemming from the July 12 incident, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.
McAuliffe is a boxer in the Bangor area who embarked on a professional career in 2010. He has four Golden Gloves Northern New England tournament titles to his credit, the last coming in 2010.
Edwards said the female renter and her boyfriend were inside the apartment when a drunken McAuliffe came to the door.
“He forced his way in and sat on the couch,” the sergeant said. “When he got there he was under the influence. They told him to get out.”
One of the occupants attempted to pull McAuliffe off the couch after calling police, Edwards said, but the suspect resisted, resulting in a scuffle.
Bangor police Officer Brent Beaulieu arrived and arrested McAuliffe. He was booked into the Penobscot County Jail and later released on bail.
McAuliffe served 30 days in jail on an assault charge 2000, according to Bangor Daily News archives.

They tried to pull the GOLDEN GLIOVE fighter off the couch AFTER they called the police. Sort of like putting the landing gear down after a belly landing…..
Yea not sure id try to pull a drunk boxer off my couch either
nor a sober one
Yeah, Im sure they knew he was a former boxer. Its pretty easy to tell what a person is all about when you first meet them drunk on your couch. Shoulda known better, silly people.
Are you familiar with the word aquaintance? If you met someone who’s life was fighting-you’d probably know that fairly quickly. I’m thinking they knew what this guy was all about.
I am rather educated, but aquaintance eludes me. I could be a prick, here, but I’ll just politely inform you that you missed a C in there: acquaintance… I suppose I failed to notice that when reading the original article an thus I just assumed he forced his way into some random peoples house. Ooooooopppppsssss.
You got me…..we’ll call it even ok?
Rocky? I doubt it.
bully-straight up.
They always remember the one they lost, it eats at them. tough career choice sad to say.
I really doubt that this had anything to do with “the one he lost” If you are referring to losing in boxing.
hmmm. refused to leave after being asked….sounds like an intruder. Dont need fists with a Smith and Wesson.
Did I miss something in this article? I can see a trespassing violation, which I note there was none given, but how did the assault charge get in there? Was it the ‘scuffle’? Is a scuffle considered ‘assault’? And there is no mention of anything indicating reason for a ‘burglary’ charge? Huh?
Burglary is the crime. Most people equate burglary to a theft. The burglary is entering a place of which you plan to commit or commit a crime therein. The crime could be the assault, the criminal trespass or several others. In this case, the place is someone’s residence which takes the crime up a notch. He committed a burglary. He committed the crime of assault, criminal trespass and possibly refusing to submit to an arrest. The story is accurate.
Its funny how they try to make it sound like him being a former amateur boxer has anytthing to do with it? He played football in highschool too, why didnt they talk about that? Josh hasnt boxed in years…way to run down the sport. He actually has been training in MMA the last year or so… and has far more then just 4 GG titles. Way to get your facts.
The reason they mentioned his boxing is because he actually had success with it. If he were in the UFC, they would have mentioned his MMA training too, but otherwise, his boxing is still the highlight of his fighting resume.
They mention this to show he’s more dangerous than your average drunk guy on the couch.
There are more then one level of MMA fighting, not just the UFC. Just like boxing. He is in the same level with mma as he was with boxing. What Im saying is he is not a bangor boxer. He used to box. It just makes the sprt look bad is all Im saying and he hasnt done it in a while. But i do see your point for sure. I would rather have to remove a non boxer in that type of a situation too.
First off, Josh is not a “Bangor Boxer”, he is a Bangor MMA fighter. Josh used to be a boxer from Bangor, but due to his conduct, he was removed from the gym that had trained him for many years, therefore went to MMA. Also, credit where credit is due: Josh is an 8 time Golden Glove champ, and also a former USA Boxing New England champ. The headline should have NOTHING to do with him being a FORMER boxer. The sad truth is that Josh has serious issues he deals with, or does not deal with, which is what put him in that apartment. being a FORMER boxer did not put him there. I wish you well Josh….I really wish you had taken the advice and opportunity that you were given so many times and you would be in such a better place today….
He clearly had success with his boxing days, and this aspect of his past makes him a more dangerous intruder, so it’s relevant to the story.
Oh yes lets shoot someone that enters a home whom has likely sat on that couch before. I am starting to get a little concerned over how many folks that comment on BDN would shoot first and ask questions later. Am I adverse to a situation where it’s you or my family? Hell no but many of these cavalier comments regarding guns and when they would be brought into play worry me.
At least he’ll be alright in jail…. NOT! I cant imagine how bad of a time he’s going to have. All the young kids who think they are tough find out he use to beat people up for a living are gonna wanna take their shot. And while he’ll probably beat the first couple off, thats about it.
