ORRINGTON, Maine — The usual calm and quiet interrupted only by crickets and bullfrogs was shattered by sirens, strobe lights, fire and gunshots early Sunday morning as police and firefighters responded to reports of a fire around an Orrington residence and business.
Penobscot Regional Communications Center received initial reports at 2:15 a.m. Sunday of a fire and, shortly afterward, gunfire at 312 Johnson Mill Road, a rental property located on a large private land parcel also occupied by Shaw’s Garage and a private residence.
A neighbor who wished not to be identified said she heard four gunshots in quick succession sometime between 1 a.m. when she went to sleep and 2:30 a.m. when police first arrived.
“Around 2:15 a.m., dispatch got call about a house fire and Orrington Fire responded,” said Penobscot County Sheriff Glenn Ross. “We also responded, and based upon observation at the scene, we asked for assistance from the state fire marshal’s office.”
Ross said the gunshots occurred after initial 911 calls about the fire, but before police arrived.
“There were shots fired and all of this is still under active investigation,” Ross said. “There were no injuries and so far, no arrests have been made.”
The property — estimated by neighbors to be at least 10 acres — also includes the commercial garage; a private road named Shaw Lane; a private, four-bay garage; another, nonrental residence, and a few other buildings at 310 Johnson Mill Road. The two-bedroom rental with a blue, metal roof at 312 Johnson Mill Road is the site of the disturbances.
An estimated quarter-mile stretch of the Johnson Mill Road — in front of the property — was closed to traffic in both directions for a few hours early Sunday morning.
Police units from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police and Orrington police responded along with units from both the Orrington and Brewer fire departments.
Neighbors said they heard multiple gunshots and that apparently one person at the rented residence spilled gasoline in a circle around the house and lit it on fire with the intention to burn the house down. Witnesses said a man with a garden hose put out most of the fire before firefighters arrived.
Neighbors who were interviewed by police also said both the tactical and mobile crime lab units from Maine State Police were on site.
“I’d say somebody’s in a lot of trouble since they [police] took a lot of stuff out of the house,” said one neighbor, who noted it’s not the first time police have been called to the location, specifically the house that’s being rented.
“We had an incident here about a year ago where SWAT was called,” she said. “It’s not the family that owns the land, the Shaws, it’s the renters that seem to cause the trouble.”
Neighbors said police have been called to the address more than once in the past.
“We have been called to that residence before,” Sheriff Ross confirmed.
There was also an armed standoff at a Johnson Mill Road home in April 2011, according to BDN archives, when police arrested a man after an overnight, armed standoff.
Stephen Nason, 25, was intoxicated and out of control in the residence, and when officers arrived, he fled into the woods.
Officers left the scene but were notified shortly afterward that Nason had returned to the home and had assaulted his mother and sister, although their injuries were minor.
When officers returned shortly after 10:30 p.m., Nason grabbed a knife and barricaded himself in his bedroom, prompting the engagement of the Penobscot County Special Response Team and the Maine State Police Tactical Team. The special forces remained at the home until Nason surrendered at about 6:45 a.m. and was arrested on charges of domestic assault, criminal mischief, violation of terms of release and creating a police standoff.
Nason was fined $300 for assault.
Neighbors said the last name of the current occupants of the rental home is Ireland.

come on some one quick blame the guns for shooting not the man using them. Also better ban fire because he was trying to burn house down, maybe time to get rid of gas cans, after all it is for the greater good.
Brett being a gun owner and a supporter of the 2nd Amendment I find your attempt to goad this into a discussion of guns rights appalling. These were likely NOT people we would want owning firearms considering they were firing them indiscriminately into a residence at night where people just might have been sleeping. Please, next time think before you post.
Wasn’t trying to goad at all just beating someone to the punch, if you go back over the last year every articaul that reports gun shots, or gun used has almost immediately pulled the it is the guns fault. I dont know if we want them owning guns or not as we only have one side of the story as the police have not released any details yet. We really dont know if they were shooting into a residence of just shooting of private property, and that was my point with out the facts people will tend to jump to a conclusion. If they were firing randomly into a building then by all means toss them in jail throw away the key and dont let them every own guns again. But even you as a gun owner jumped to conclusion that because the paper said so it is true. We dont know the facts and that has got to stop we have got to stop persecuting people at least until we know the whole story. And even when we do know the story we have to make sure to blame the people not the items because so many people blame the items and not the people that was the whole point of the statement.
Sorry Brett…I didn’t jump to conclusions. The story will come out and you will be saying “toss them in jail throw away the key and dont let them every own guns again”.
Love people who say “throw away the key”. Not very efficient. Have to build A LOT of prisons with one use doors. Suppose, considering the wasted resources, time and lives, we’d be just as well off gassing everyone who breaks the law and being done with it… The ignorance of some people, while no longer takes me by surprise, certainly never ceases to leave me quite baffled.
Brett remember yesterday I said when the rest of the story comes out you will be saying “toss them in jail throw away the key and dont let them every own guns again” well here is a bit more on the story… http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2012/07/23/news/bangor/orrington-home-targeted-by-arsonist-mdea-called-in-to-investigate/
Also please dont ask me to think or jump to conclusions on my post i usually have a reason to post what i post and always make sure i know what i mean. I admit that it does not come out as i intend and i do aplogise for that and even admit it when i am wrong. But notice i dont hide who i am, what i do or what i agree with, so for you to assume that i was not thinking is insulting to me .
Still quit upset about you assuming i was defending the person, i keep reading my post no where in there do i defend his actions if they are true, in fact i suggest blaming him. My only concern is that we do not blame an object for the action of the person. Not sure at all where you see me defending the person at all.
Then you didn’t read the post Brett. My complaint was with your preemptive strike and making it about gun control and not about a person(s) trying to burn a house down and then firing indiscriminately into the residence at night.
Hey… I was just looking at the picture and wondered if all three of those guys responded in that truck, thats all.
I agree…why doesn’t Brett try to ban oxygen…after all fire needs it to breath….instead of taking a victim of oppression atitude find a way to fix america’s issues…(OR SIMPLY REMAIN SILENT)
not sure what you are saying but it is a very simple point i am all for and always support throwing the book at people who break the law, i am just also 100 percent against blaming any item for the action of people. Unfortunately most people tend to blame items instead off the people.

Why can’t you shoot guns on your property. we used to shoot on our property all the time as kids.
Did you also try and burn your house down with gas?
At 2:30 AM?
A) as long as you aren’t violating any laws and know where the bullet is going
B) The middle of the night is probably not considered a good time to fire a weapon on anybody’s property
Not after dark…. While calling the demons out of your house with a ring of fire.
Maybe they were warning shots fired to scare away the arsonist. That might make it safer to get out there with a garden hose.
I think it’s time for the town, or maybe the State, to get involved and make sure the right people are renting this home. Perhaps a State Committee to go through a checklist with a 3 day waiting time to check on criminal records and mental stability. Obviously the landlord cannot be trusted to find the right tenant. The government should be involved to greatest extent possible. IMHO
Controlling private property isn’t the answer but l0nger sentences after a stand-off might.
I think (given his screen-name) he was being sarcastic.
Brett, put a sock in it.
Is the International truck for sale?
burner_97@yahoo.com
Funny how it magically changes to International Red with bright shiny new chrome trim right before the eyes isn’t it. It looks to be a solid truck from the angle the picture is taken.
It may be now if they need bail or pay a fine!
Just make drugs legal and free the people
Sigh. Stay classy, Maine.
i know the shaw family, great people
