DEDHAM and ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – Richard Conrad Carey, 80, passed away July 20, 2012, at a Bangor hospital with his family by his side. Richard was born April 2, 1930, in Bucksport, to George and Evadne Whitehouse Carey.
Richard was educated in the Bucksport school system. He worked at Bucksport Red & White before he enlisted in the Air Force in 1952. He was honorably discharged in 1956 after serving in Arizona and England. After discharge, he worked for General Electric Supply Co., Bangor. After two years, he was promoted to an outside sales position. This was his calling because he at one time was the No. 1 salesperson in the U.S. for GE Supply. He worked as a sales representative for GE Supply for 35 years. After his retirement, Richard made his home in Florida for many years coming to Maine to live on Green Lake for the summer. He was a past Master of Ralph J. Pollard Lodge AF & AM of Orrington in 1975. He was also a member of Scottish Rites Valley of Bangor and Valley of Portland. He was a member of Anah Temple Shrine. He had many friends throughout the AA community. Richard was a self-taught carpenter who built his home in Orrington and camps on Green Lake. He loved to hunt, fish, garden and cook, which his family and friends always enjoyed. He was especially proud of his five grandsons.
He was predeceased by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Bowden; and four brothers, Emerson Carey, Raymond Carey, Herbert Carey and George Carey. He is survived by his wife, Gale of Florida. He is also survived by his son, Stephen Carey and his wife, Dawn, of Marco Island, Fla., and their sons, Richard Carey, Ryan Carey and his wife, Selina Carey, Travis Carey, all of Portland, and Thomas Carey of San Diego. Also surviving are two daughters, Gwendolyn Carey of Bangor and Diane Carey of Bangor and her son, Dana Carey, and his fiancee, Tina Byers, of Kenduskeag. He leaves one sister, Eunice Royal and her husband, Charles, of Arizona; several nieces and one nephew. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Pauline Carey of Bangor.
Richard’s request was to have a private memorial service for the family at a later date.
