HERMON, Maine — Emergency medical personnel from Speedway 95, Hermon and Hampden were called to Speedway 95 on Wednesday night after a crash that involved four female racers.
It was not immediately clear if any of the racers suffered serious injury, but all were responsive immediately after the crash, Speedway 95 Head Scorer Kim Baker Allen said late Wednesday. She said, however, that one of the women was able to drive her car away from the wreck site.
Allen said the pileup happened about 9 p.m. during the second race in a three-race summer series in the ladies division. Drivers Nicole Smith of Bangor and Kayla Allen of Penobscot collided in turn two of their second lap. Becky Elston of Carmel and Amy Houde of Howland also were involved.
Allen and Smith were taken by ambulance to local hospitals for treatment of hand and shoulder injuries and headaches, the track official said. Allen was able to get out of her car on her own but Smith had to be extricated when track officials cut off the roof of her car.
Elston’s car had minor damage and she was able to drive it off the track, Allen said. The other three cars had to be towed.
The rest of the race, which was the last of the evening, was canceled as a result of the accident and will be rescheduled.
I don’t believe the fact that the drivers were female had anything to do with the crash.

Could just be stating the facts. Four female drivers were involved in a crash at Speedway 95. The gender could be of import in the sense that there are not many female drivers at Speedway 95. One of the co-authors of the article is female, so I doubt there would be heavy sexist undertones.
I agree. I think it was intended to just be a normal, informative headline. The reader is left to infer that being female was the cause of the accident.

What’s wrong with with the title? It would have said the same thing if men were involved. It would have read 4 male drivers involved. This is why this country is so screwed up now. Stop being so darn sensitive! Get over it. Was it not 4 female involved? Oh yes it was.
If the drivers had been male I think they would have been described simply as “racers” or “drivers”, as you may have preferred. But, you have to admit that there are an overwhelming percentage of male racers, so that is probably why BDN used the added descriptive word “female”. Did they use it to attract attention? Dunno.
It worked … otherwise I wouldn’t have read it… now if they could have worked in a little texting or the application of lipstick! I’d move it up to the top article… I was watching this young lady ranting on her cell last night in my rearview mirror at a stop light…
