FRIENDSHIP, Maine — A shed was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon where children had earlier been burning books.

The fire was accidental, according to Friendship Fire Chief Kevin Benner.

Three youths had been in the shed — an approximately 10-by-12-foot building — and had been burning books. The youths thought the fire had been extinguished when they left. Benner did not know what books the youths were burning or why.

The fire was reported at about 2 p.m.

Knox County Sheriff Paul Spear also responded to the fire. According to the sheriff’s office report, the youths were apologetic. The fire marshal was contacted and is expected to meet with the children in the next few weeks.

The fire occurred on the property of the mother of one of the juveniles.

  1. Throw the book at them….little deviants.  They know better than playing with fire at that age.

  2. Looks like our society is moving in the right direction; children are voluntarily burning books!  Our corporate masters will have no trouble subduing future generations..

    1. Not just corporate. Germany, 1935, ‘Krystalnacht’. History is repeating itself. Now, are we so stupid or forgetful to let this happen all over again or are we going to go down that road like Germany did ? If you’ve done time in the Service, well, you’ve seen what happens when freedom and democracy are substituted with ‘nationalism’  as it’s so-called replacement and ‘policy’.

    1. doubt they or their parents get your reference. i.ve met many smart people over the years that lacked the wisdom to know the difference. our society has been heading down the road to be just like that book for a long time. keep giving every generation the best in tech and it will be hastened.

    2. My father was obsessed with that book…but I look toward the convergence of all media – television, radio, books, movies, music, magazines, internet, and more on our phones, laptops, and tablets because it is more compact. Nothing can replace books but at least I can enlarge the print and listen to music while reading a book.

  3. I wonder what they were reading that was so awful that they thought they had to burn them.

    1.  If they were Christians – Harry Potter, Republican – Al Gore’s an Inconvenient Truth, or the Constitution, and if the were Democrats – George W’s Decision Points.

    1.  Yes, it is important!  Hopefully parents are having a talk with their children about playing with fire. You have to remind children often because there are to many thoughts of having fun to remember what they are told not to do!!
