BANGOR, Maine — Dr. Georg L. Rymph, a physician at Eastern Maine Medical Center, died at the age of 44 on Monday while overseas in Sri Lanka, the hospital said Tuesday.
A memo sent to EMMC physicians Tuesday said hospital personnel have no details about Rymph’s death “other than it appeared to be peaceful, not involving accident or violence.”
Rymph, a board-certified family practice specialist, had been an inpatient care hospitalist at EMMC since 2004 after graduating from the EMMC Family Medicine Residency Program.
Rymph’s family lives in Missouri and is working with the U.S. Embassy to arrange for the return of his body to the United States, the hospital said.
Rymph, an avid bicyclist, graduated from Purdue University in Indiana before earning his medical degree in 1999 at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York.
He completed his family practice residency at EMMC.

RIP, Dr. Rymph.
This is so sad. Our country is at war with everybody….we send awseome men and women like Dr. Rymph all over the world to solve everybody elses problems….this may sound heartless, but when are we as a country going to stop being the worlds policemen (wars), and the worlds saviors (Dr’s)…..we need to stay home and help/save our own. God Bless Dr. Rymph…….RIP…very sad..
Was he sent there, or on vacation??
He was there for a wedding.
Soldiers and even “Doctors without Borders” are volunteers. Since they do, I applaud them!
Isolationism doesn’t work. Because of it, we didn’t actively help Britain fight Hitler until after Pearl Harbor. FDR was happy to have an excuse to help our friends.
nothing to do with his death! not a good comment!
The point was well made. Get over it!!!!! May he Rest In Peace….
Why doe this event have to be a political statement? We do have many many Americans helping overseas, but the main issue is this good man’s tragic death.
What exactly does your comment have to do with the loss of his life?? He was supposedly there for a wedding/vacation. You make it sound like he was forced overseas or something. Talk about rude. Doesn’t matter how many times you say it’s sad, your comment isn’t very appropriate for this situation, IMHO.
The point was well made…get over it….never said ANYTHING about being forced…may he Rest In Peace…
You don’t even know the circumstances behind his reasons for being out of the country.
And doctors are not forced to go anywhere they don’t want to go. If he was in Sri Lanka for work, then he went on his own free will.
George- one of my favorite residents. thoughtful, insightful, caring, funny. Be at peace George. i hope you did not suffer. my heart goes out to your family.
I went to school with Georg. He was as unique as they come. I guess everyone is, but Georg was just a very impressive human being. RIP.
He has passed away peacefully in his hotel room while lying on the bed. There had been no signs of suffering. RIP Dr George Rymph. Deepest sympathies to his family.
Not trying to sound disrespectful but how do you die peacefully in your sleep at 44? Gotta be more to it than that. Prayers to the family for sure.
undiagnosed medical condition, probably some kind of cardiac event…
I went to school with Georg, and learned what “odd” was because of him, at an awkward time growing up when conformity tends to be the rule. Georg defined free spirit, and inspired more people than I think he ever realized. Georg: I will miss not having that beer with you. It’s one meeting I have thought about and missed for 22 years now. Rest in peace, man.
Godspeed Georg
Georg was an amazing physician and the best kind of man, honest and genuine. He will be deeply missed. Those of us who had the honor of knowing well were bettered by his company and blessed to have known him. Georg I will always remember you as being “just right”
Georg was neither a political nor religious man, and I know it would sadden him to know his life was generating any talk of that nature. Please remember him as he was and out of respect to those that knew and loved him, refrain from social commentary.
Oh course you can die in your sleep at an early age. I had a friend die in his sleep peacefully last summer and he was only 37
I cant believe this….every time i see it the shock is as real as the first time i saw it….i can hear his voice in the background and still see him walking down the hall….how insane :(
RIP to Dr. Rymph. He was a nice man.
