  1. MOTOR VEHICLE VIOLENCE IN THE US and the world.

Meanwhile,34,000 people were killed by motor vehicles in the US, and in India, four times as many at 134,000.
    Brazil around 37,000.
    China 68,000.

    1. Yes, and I want to see Mitt Romney’s real birth certificate, the one from Planet Mongo.
But what’s that got to do with the price of lobster?

          1.  Probably because he has never submitted an obvious fake one, which led to the whole mess started by Obama to begin with.  If it is fake, he paid good money for it.

          2.  I feel that Romney;s a tax cheat, I also think that if Barack Obama, was not a person of color, no one would question his place of birth, even if his father had been a white Kenyan.

  2. Maybe what we need to do to discourage the BDN in its febrile enthusiasms is put things so simply that even an editor can understand them, so: any Maine legislator whose district lies outside of Greater Portland or a University of Maine campus will commit career suicide if he/she supports any kind of restrictive gun control.  And those from around Portland aren’t all that secure, either.

I trust this appeal to sweet reason will work where mere argument has failed.

    1. The best way to influence your State Legislators is to write them over and over and encourage everyone to do the same.  And remind them that election day can result in a pink slip if they go against the People’s wishes.

  3. “Only 24% of non-whites have {legal} guns!”

Most homicides occur in the inner cities – like Washington, DC and Chicago.  If a “non-white” admitted possession of a gun in such jurisdictions, they would be in the slammer faster than you can say “help!”

    1. Quite right.  Most homicides occur in so called Gun Free Zones or places with extreme firearms restrictions or bans.

  4. Erin Rhoda is the BDN editorial page editor.  The BDN gives front page space (with more in the editorial pages) to an organization that has maybe 300 members in the State of Maine!

I believe that Maine and Vermont have the highest per-capita rates of gun ownership AND the lowest per-capita crime rates – QED!

    1. Thats not what the rest of the civilized world has found. We are the most violent culture in the world and our naive acceptance of handguns is precisely why. Look at canadas stats and get back to me on that.

      1. How does this refute lobsterhound’s post?  I know a lot of Canadians and they are far from happy with their new gun laws.

Regardless of what the rest of the world has found, the fact still remains that here in America we have the unalienable Right to keep and bear arms.

When you figure out a way to disarm the armed, predatory criminals then I’ll be the first to join you in your Utopian land of unicorns and soft pink fuzzy bunny slippers.  Until then, I refuse to allow myself or my family to become unarmed victims.

      2. We are the most violent culture in the world and our naive acceptance of handguns is precisely why.

I believe Great Britain has a higher violent crime rate than we do now, and it can’t be said that their acceptance of handguns, naive or otherwise, is very marked. And of course, Maine is the exemplar of well-armed peaceableness.

  5. How about the front page headline in Saturday’s papers about knives and stabbings in Maine?  It is the person with the weapon who is responsible, whether it is a gun or a knife.

  6.  people do see the trend that homicides are down as a whole though right?

Why do people act like it is some big surprise that guns account for %50 of homicide and suicide? they are easy and efficient it just stands to logic they will be the preferred choice. I also understand the logic of “limited access” that you limit and restrict guns and make it difficult to possess them. However sometimes logic doesn’t sync up with reality. The humanistic instinct to protect the people of Chicago and other places has failed. Those places that have highly restrictive gun laws and more specifically handgun laws have seen the worst handgun related homicide rates in the country. The problem isnt guns or availability of guns. The urban culture of gang banging and drug dealing has a lot to do with handgun violence. This figures represent ALL gun violence I think if you broke it down into legal and illegal ownership you would see a very different picture.

    1. Wasn’t sure where you were headed at first.  Glad I read the whole post Tom.

Couldn’t agree more.  Less guns does not equal less crime.  In fact it usually means more violent crime when the bad guy has a soft unarmed target.

  7. Nice chart, but it falls well short of telling the whole tale.

FACT:  In 2010 there were just under 9400 firearms murders, nationwide, while there were almost 34,000 vehicular deaths.

FACT:  Statistically, you are safer around an Armed Law Abiding Citizen (ALAC) than a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO).  LEO’s shoot the wrong person 11% of the time while ALACs have a mere 2% wrong person rate.  This not a knock on LEOs, they, for the most part, are doing a very difficult job very well with limited resources.

FACT:  If we keep yielding to the anti-gunners we will soon have NO Second Amendment left.  When the 2nd Amendment falls the rest of our Constitutional Rights will fall like dominoes.

When seconds count the police are MINUTES away.  Defend yourselves.
