ELLSWORTH, Maine — What could have been a routine traffic stop ended with a foot chase and the discovery of a small marijuana-growing operation, according to Ellsworth police.

Officer Chad Wilmot attempted to pull over a vehicle that was allegedly speeding on Bayside Road early Saturday morning, according to a police report. The driver, Michael Haynes, 19, refused to stop and continued driving to his residence at Gameston Park Road.

Ellsworth Police Lt. Harold Page said that when Haynes pulled into his driveway, Wilmot saw a passenger — later identified as Mickey Manning, 21, of Sullivan — get out of the car and flee into the woods. Wilmot pursued Manning to no avail, but found five marijuana plants growing in a wooded plot behind Haynes’ home.

Wilmot returned to Haynes and searched his vehicle, in which he found containers of Bud Light beer. Haynes was arrested on a charge of failure to stop for a law enforcement officer and issued summonses for cultivation of marijuana, illegal transportation of liquor by a minor and speeding.

Haynes was booked in Hancock County Jail around 2 a.m. Saturday and released on $350 unsecured bail.

Page said Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Rob Morang caught up with Manning at his Sullivan home Sunday and issued him a summons for violation of bail conditions.

      1. They arnt going to be behind plexi as neither of them are going to do time and nor are either of them currently in jail, so your comment is again, absolutely absurd, but i’ll extrapolate simply because I find you annoying.

Typically, male friends, while often in close proximity to each other, hardly ever come too close. Its an unspoken understanding. Just like how if you take a wee at a public place, you never take the open spot between two people. Pelxiglass in most jails is an inch thick, at most. So, using the powers of deductive logic, I can reasonably say that despite the fact that the plexi could, in theory separate them, these two individuals have the ability to be as close, if not closer then they typically would normally be, given they were not in jail. Im sure they would be happy enough with that inch distance. Most dudes dont want to sit on their friends laps.

          1.  Such is the nature of life. I find him annoying because of a previous, ignorant comment he left. If you find me annoying, feel free to leave a witty post in response. However, if wit, satire and comedy are somethings you cannot appreciate nor recognize, then feel free to leave a very simple, unnecessary, redundant comment…. Oh, wait….

  1. Wow.  Because when I’m getting pulled over for speeding, I’d rather be arrested for cultivation.

    Morons.

  2. Nice work Chad…more scumbags off the streets of Ellsworth……..young with records, future career felons…….

    1. … and the police should be proud of arresting two kids who apparently hurt no-one. Bang up job there, crime stoppers. Brilliant. Truly brilliant.

      1.  So when people are speeding, and the cops try to pull them over…the speeders should drive faster and the cops should give up?

Yeah…you sound like someone who keeps screwing up, getting caught, and blaming it on someone else.

        1. And you sound like a pompous brainwashed sheep, fancy that? If I screw up and get caught, I have no-one to blame but myself, clearly.

I didn’t say anything about speeding, did I? Nope. I was merely expressing the fact that catching them with beers and a few weed plants is nothing to celebrate, nor grounds to criticize a persons parents or upbringing. These two people hurt no-one. We dont even know what “speeding” is, in this case. The driver could have just been going a few over. It also doesnt mention anything about it being a high speed chase. There is no evidence anyone was in danger. So basically, your sarcasm and ignorant remarks about me are completely unwarranted. And, to answer your questions, if you speed and the cops catch you, I suppose you should probably take your punishment like a man.

It also sounds like the cop left the driver of the car, whom was doing something illegal to chase after someone else in the woods who had done absolutely nothing wrong. I didnt suppose leaving a suspect in a car and chasing after someone who, at that point was innocent of any wrong doing, was part of what the police typically do. Silly me.

The point of my post was that this is hardly crime and rather then chasing people in the woods and arresting kids for having a few plants and beers the cops time would better be served preventing and solving ACTUAL crimes. Like perhaps any one of the countless pharmacy robberies that have happened lately.

Oh, if only these comments were not censored, how I would give you a verbal lashing of a life time. Such ignorance.

          1. I do believe that speeding, failure to stop for an officer, underage drinking, transporting alcohol, and growing marijuana are actual crimes.  Good job, Officer Wilmot.

          2. Did u also know its a law in Maine that every Male that attends church must carry a rifle in the event of a Native American attack???

  3. Dude, when fleeing from police, don’t LEAD them to your grow operation…

At least we don’t have to worry about a cartel here!LOL

  4. And who said pot doesn’t make you stupid ??? As John Wayne said..”Life is hard..It’s even harder if you’re stupid”…LOL..

    1. Apparently the shwag these bozos are smoking makes them stupid enough to drink nasty-arse Bud Light.
