ELLSWORTH andD BREWER – Margaret “Margo” (Kemp) Patten, 95, passed away Aug. 3, 2012, in Bangor. She was born Dec. 7, 1916, in Bangor, the third child of William L. Kemp Jr. and Florence (Eaton) Kemp.
Margaret, her parents and two brothers, Horace and James moved to Ellsworth in 1921, where her parents purchased a farm on the Surry Road. She attended Ellsworth schools, graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1934. While attending high school, she was a member of the basketball team. Margaret married Philip Patten of Ellsworth Oct. 6, 1940, in Ellsworth, where they resided until 1970, when they moved to Brewer. She worked for many years as a teller at Liberty National Bank, Ellsworth, until leaving to care for her mother. Margaret also worked in the office of Watson’s Dry Cleaning. She and her husband, Phil, operated Sun Diner, High Street, for several years. Margaret and Phil were very fond of square dancing and traveled to various places in Maine and Canada to participate in their favorite form of entertainment. She was a member of Eastern Star, Bayside Grange, Rebekah’s of Ellsworth and First Congregational Church, Brewer.
She is survived by two nephews, Raymond Harrington and wife, Marie, of Benton, and Donald Kemp and wife, Deborah, of Lexington, N.C.; great-nephews, Jeffery Harrington and wife, Louise, of Winslow, Kenneth Harrington and wife, Susan, of Spotsylvania, Va., and James Kemp and wife, Lynn, of Lexington, N.C.; great-niece, Jennifer and husband, Bob McDonald, of Gorham; several great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces. Margaret was predeceased by her parents; her brothers in 2010; sister-in-law, Helen Kemp, in 2011; and nephew, William Harrington of Laramie, Wyo., in 1981.
A service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Grace Bartlett, pastor of First Congregational Church of Brewer, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments in the family reception rooms immediately after the service. Interment will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
