BREWER and BANGOR – Pearl Cushman Jarvis, 95, died peacefully Aug. 6, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Montville, daughter of Chester and Lula (Arno) Cushman.
Pearl graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast. In 1941, she married her late husband, Philip O. Jarvis, and they were married almost 55 years and resided in Bangor. For a number of years, Pearl helped Phil by working in his grocery store at 210 Garland St., Bangor. She was then employed for many years at Freese’s department store in downtown Bangor. Pearl was an extremely talented and creative woman. She was a superb cook, skilled seamstress and knitter, maker of beautiful braided rugs and quilts, and cultivator of beautiful flower gardens at her home. She was an active member of Bangor Nature Club for many years. Pearl enjoyed bridge, Scrabble, bird-watching, and was an avid reader throughout her life. In 2003, Pearl moved to Ellen Leach Home, Brewer, and she made many friends there, especially her “Scrabble buddies.” Since May 2011 she had resided at Woodlands Assisted Living, Brewer.
Pearl is survived by one son, David C. Jarvis and wife, Jeanne, of Bangor; one daughter, Linda J. Collins and husband, Nicholas, of Brewer; three grandchildren, Robert Jarvis and wife, Jaime, of Bangor, Lisa Davis and husband, Josh, of Berwick, Matthew Collins and wife, Meghan, of Bangor; four great-grandchildren, Colby and Sean Davis of Berwick, and Alexandra Pearl and Lily Collins of Bangor; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Peterson of Yarmouth, and Barbara Dunlevy of Worthington, Mass.; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Philip, she was predeceased by a son, Philip Jr., in 1947; and three sisters, Helen Hodgdon, Carolyn Briggs and Margaret Dinsmore.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments will be after the funeral Mass Friday at Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
