BANGOR AND SANDY POINT – Merrill “Pappy” Bradford Sr., 94, died Aug. 6, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at his home. He was born Oct. 17, 1917, in St. Pamphile, Quebec, the only child of Grover Cleveland and Linnie (Ray) Bradford.
Pappy grew up in Fort Kent and moved to Bangor in 1935. Pappy graduated from the University of Maine, class of 1939, and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1942, where he was a member of the Lincoln Inn. After service in the Army in World War II, he returned to Bangor and married Wilma Additon in 1945. He practiced law as a senior partner in the law firm of Eaton, Peabody, Bradford and Veague for 45 years, retiring in 1990. Pappy was an active member of the Bangor community, serving on numerous boards, was a Rotarian and past president of the City Club, Tarratine Club and Sandy Point Water Co. He was a past master of St. Andrews Lodge No. 83 AF & AM, a Scottish Rite Mason and past potentate of Anah Shriners. Professionally Pappy was past president of Penobscot County and Maine State bar associations, as well as the National Conference of Bar Examiners. He served on the National Board of Directors of the American Bar Association and American College of Trust and Estate Counsel representing New England. Pappy was the family patriarch who enjoyed a good joke and especially playing cribbage, particularly with his grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Wilma “Willie” (Additon) Bradford; are children, Ray Bradford and Marlo, John Bradford and Marjie, Ann Ligums and John, and Lynn Silva and John; grandchildren, Ryan Bradford, Abby Levy and Gabe, Andrew Bradford and Holly, Will Bradford and Brooke, Leslie Bradford and Webb, James Bradford and Cara, Marion Bradford, Jeb Ligums and Gg, Jenny Leonard and Justin, Ben Ligums and Alex Silva; and great-grandchildren, Garrett Levy, Liam Bradford, Bea Bradford, Lewis Bradford, Jet Ligums, George Ligums, Jilly Leonard, JJ Leonard and Johnny Leonard.
The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at a later date and time to be announced at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
