BANGOR, Maine — A Thomaston man was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court to five years and three months in federal prison for having 2,400 doses of bath salts with an estimated street value of $170,000 hidden in his apartment and car.

Travis Griffin, 27, also was sentenced to three years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.

Griffin waived indictment and pleaded guilty in April to possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. He has been held without bail since his arrest in November following a traffic stop.

“This is a horrific amount of bath salts,” U.S. District Judge John Woodcock told Griffin shortly before imposing the sentence. “Had it been distributed, it would have caused untold sorrow and mischief in the state of Maine.”

Griffin was distributing the drug, which can cause users to hallucinate and become violent, for most of 2011 in Penobscot and Knox counties, according to the prosecution version of events to which he pleaded guilty.

“I apologize to anybody my actions may have affected,” Griffin told the judge. “I see now that drugs were a big part of my life and I’ve just got to make the best of the situation I’m in now.”

Griffin, who dropped out of school in the 10th grade, started using drugs when he was 15, Woodcock said, referring to information gathered by U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services. In the past 12 years, Griffin has been convicted of 10 crimes in state court.

He faced up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the federal drug charge. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel Casey recommended the sentence Woodcock imposed. Defense attorney Wayne Foote of Bangor urged Woodcock to impose less than five years.

As a condition of his supervised release, the judge ordered Griffin to undergo treatment for substance abuse and to pay the more than $30,000 he owes in child support.

  1. So yet again, we prove we are not serious about doing anything about drugs.  Five years.
    “I said G*d dam% the pusher man”………..Steppenwolf

    1.  You know Steppenwolf made very clear references to drugs in much of their music, right? Do you believe the magic carpet is actually a carpet thats magical, or could it be a drug reference?

I think you are using that quote out of context…

      1. Rock and roll of the 60’s & 70’s had nothing to do with drugs and I am offended by the allegation!

        1. Judging from the comment – and the screen name – it appears that one may be fundamentally confused (or more probably brain-damaged) … what drugz is it ON, anyway (ever since the 60s and 70s) ???

  2. This guy deserves much more time than he got, but at least it is a serious sentence. And 3 years of probation afterward is nothing to sneeze at. I have known people who would rather go back to jail for that period of time rather than deal with the accountability that goes along with being on probation.

    1. I was thinking the same thing, but then again, it’s not like he reported that income to the state.  I’m sure the mother of his child will be happy to see the child support and him behind bars.  I sincerely hope it straightens him out.

      1.  The child’s mother just got arrested not too long ago for trying to rob the pharmacy at the Camden Rite Aid! She would have just used the money for drugs as well.

  4. 5 years. They world will change and he won’t.
He will be forgotten.  He may find God.  Maine doesn’t have a federal prison.
I was told once that joe was doing well and had been sober for 5 years, then I was told he had 3 years left before being released from prison.. LOL
I bet federal Prison isn’t fun, knowing how the Governemt runs things.

  5. I just don’t get it. 27 years old and this is how he is deciding to spend half a decade behind bars. I feel bad for the child who calls him daddy.

  6. Who was the dumb woman whoprocreated with this garbage. If he was a drop out she should not even be interested in him at all. She should get nothing for being so dumb!
