BIG REED POND, Maine — Two friends who failed to return to their camp as scheduled in Piscataquis County on Monday night were found early Tuesday, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Raven Joseph, 20, of Queens, N.Y., and Jamie Snook, 16, of Merrimac, Mass., told wardens they hiked to Reed Mountain north of the camp on Big Reed Pond late Monday afternoon, but missed the camp on the return trip after the compass on one of their iPhones failed, Lt. Tom Ward said in a statement.

Snook’s father, Hilary Snook, 56, of Queens arrived at the camp Monday night expecting to meet his daughters and a brief search was launched when he found out they weren’t there, Ward said.

Two game wardens went into the camp and six more, including a pair of K-9s, and an airplane were dispatched at daylight Tuesday.

Joseph and Jamie Snook were found at 9 a.m. Tuesday a little more than a mile away from the camp, Ward said. Aside from a few scratches, they were uninjured.

“The Maine Warden Service reminds outdoor enthusiasts to always be prepared while hiking in the field and to carry a light, matches, a compass, and plenty of water,” Ward said in the statement. “It’s also a good idea to leave a note or let someone know where you are going and when you will return.”

  1. remember to pack a brain too. seriously I’m glad they are safe and must of been anxious moments for Dad I mean Hillary whatever.

  2. I am thinking, a new Reality Show “Apps Gone Bad”? Remonds me of the time the guy lugged a fax machine while hiking in Acadia, in case he needed a map…

  3. Failed compass or failure to know how to use it? Two out of state young women were hiking through the woods on a compass course in August-Maybe in the fall or winter-but  summer? I’m glad they are OK-I’d be doing some serious checking for ticks…….

  4. Don’t bother learning to write because your iPhone will do it for you. Don’t bother to read because your iPhone will do it for you. Don’t bother to learn math calculations, your iPhone will do it for you. Don’t bother to sing or learn and instrument because your iPhone will do it for you. What do you do when your iPhone dies and there’s no place to charge it? What do you do when something catastrophic takes out your part of the electric grid? Learn to be self-sufficient and self-reliant. And, NO, there ISN’T AN APP FOR THAT!

  5. just pack a “REAL” compass please.  Plain Common sense. Iphone batteries die quick -magnets are forever!

    1. Besides, real compasses don’t need cell towers.  Even a GPS would have trouble in thick woods.

  6. Good to know they had an app for a compass, when the term “Theres an app for that” come about, nobody said it was actually going to work right. I got one on my Android phone, there has been times I found it to be inaccurate when I compare it to an actual compass. ONce in a while I do find it to be accurate but nothing I would put my money on if I was hiking.

  7. A real compass…ha ha ha. Like a NEW YORKER from Queens would know what one is never mind how to use the darn thing. I’d blame the cell service provider in the BIG REED POND area and file a lawsuit on the carrier. It’s a NY thing to do don’t-cha-know. *SMILE*
