CARMEL – George H. Smith, 98, died Aug. 15, 2012, at his home. He was born April 4, 1914, the son of George F. Smith and Esther E. (Hardy) Smith.
During his life time of 98 years, he touched many lives having been a National Granger, the 1954 past master and member of 66 years of Benevolent Lodge No. 87 and member of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 55. George spent practically a lifetime working as a cabinetmaker, and served as the town assessor and was Carmel’s first fire chief. He was a Maine State guide, first class, and spent many years maintaining snowmobile trails. He loved to hunt and fish.
George is survived by sisters, Helen Poland of Florida and Ruth Doble of Bangor and Cornville; a brother, Gladwin Smith of New Hampshire; his children, Sylvia Andrews, Alvin and Carolyn Smith, Duane and Louanne Smith, Brenda and Harold Sherwood Sr., all of Carmel, and Franklin and Linda Smith of Hermon; many other family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Elsie (Appleby) Smith; a sister, Marian Cormier; brothers, Rodney and Martin Smith; son-in-law, Lawrence Andrews; daughter-in-law, Donna (Boulier) Smith; and granddaughter, Tina and special friend, Edie. He was known to many others, more than his immediate family, as dad or grandpa.
A graveside service to be held 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Highland Cemetery, Carmel, with his nephew, Chester Blanchard, presiding. Family and friends are invited for a potluck celebration of life at the Smith family home, 238 Hampden Road, Carmel, immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name can be made to Carmel Volunteer Fire Department or Benevolent Lodge No 87.
