BELFAST, Maine — A Rockland man who reportedly rolled a grocery cart full of liquor bottles out of the Hannaford supermarket in Belfast earlier this month has been charged with theft, Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden reported Wednesday.
On Aug. 10, Hannaford officials told police about the theft, which took place at about 4:30 p.m. that day. The perpetrator “grabbed a shopping cart, loaded it up with bottles and simply walked out without paying for it,” McFadden said. “It was a fairly significant theft of a bunch of booze.”
Hannaford officials reviewed security surveillance video and gave it to police, who in turn posted images on the department’s Facebook page and made them available to news media. An anonymous tip received Monday identified the man taking the liquor as Zachary Fowler, 32, of Rockland.
When Belfast police officer Tom Ballard spoke to Fowler at his home, Fowler “eventually confessed,” McFadden said. He was issued a summons for theft.
Ummm, did anyone at Hannaford try to stop the guy as he strolled out the door? At least someone should have followed him out and got his license plate number and vehicle description while someone else called the police.
