It is unfortunate that the stunningly insensitive statement about rape made last weekend by Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) is casting a shadow over the start of the Republican National Convention. Republican leaders, led by Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan, rightfully and strongly repudiated his remarks.

Yet, the comments from Akin reinforce the perception that we in the Republican Party are unsympathetic to issues of paramount concern to women.

I have worked for three decades as a staunch advocate to build a “big tent” party that includes both pro-choice and pro-life Republicans. In that time, I have seen controversies such as this one alienate a large segment of the female population and perpetuate the gender gap among voters that has historically plagued our party.

This is not where I hoped my party would be in 2012. Today, the Republican Party faces a clear challenge: Will we rebuild our relationship with women, thereby placing us on the road to success in November, or will we continue to isolate them and certainly lose this election?

The Akin controversy, and the ongoing debate over abortion, is especially regrettable given the fact that Romney had made inroads with female voters. The most recent three-week average of polls from Gallup — taken before the controversy — showed him down only eight points to President Obama among women. That was a marked improvement from earlier margins; he was down 20 points in the spring.

At the convention, Romney must work to overcome what others in our party have done to undermine our standing with women, and he must restore the image of who we are as Republicans.

The convention affords him the first unfettered opportunity to reset the debate. When he takes center stage, he can restate who he is and what he hopes to accomplish as president. First and foremost, Romney should vigorously, not timidly, disassociate himself from the extremes within our party by reiterating to the national audience that the overly rigid language on abortion contained in the GOP platform — which includes no explicit exceptions for cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother — does not represent his view, nor has it been his position. In fact, 75 percent of Americans agree with Romney that these exceptions should be recognized, according to a recent Gallup survey, putting him squarely in the mainstream on this issue. In doing so, he will demonstrate that he can strongly stand up to those with whom he disagrees, even within his party.

He should also emphasize his strong record on women’s issues, which shows that he cares about their well-being. He will be off to a good start when former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, my colleague, speak to the convention about why the Romney-Ryan ticket is right for women in this election.

Romney should highlight that, as governor, he enhanced the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry by permitting information and photos of high-level offenders to be posted online. He also signed legislation allowing the GPS tracking of domestic violence offenders to help keep their victims safe at home and at work. At least 18 states have adopted similar laws. Massachusetts also led the way in the number of women in top positions of government during his tenure as the state’s chief executive, including his lieutenant governor, chief of staff and numerous cabinet officials. This is one way Romney can help draw female voters to the Republican ticket.

But beyond these actions, Romney must continue to center his attention on the primary issue of importance to women: being able to support themselves and their families. And that means having a job. According to a recent Pew Research Center report, “Women represent the only group for whom employment growth has lagged behind population growth in the recovery.” Even for young women, job prospects remain bleak, as the unemployment rate for those ages 16 to 24 has climbed from 13.8 percentthis spring to 16.2 percent in July.

The public is clamoring for the presidential candidates to offer solutions to the challenges that are going to determine our economic destiny. The current policies emanating from Washington have produced little hope and even less results, leaving us mired in the worst post-recession recovery in our nation’s history. This should be a winning conversation for Republicans, particularly given Romney’s background in the private sector.

Romney should underscore that he would protect crucial safety-net programs such as Medicare and Social Security, on which women disproportionately rely. In 2009, for instance, 56 percent of Medicare recipients were female, and 43 percent of women enrolled in Medicare were living at or near poverty, compared with 32 percent of men. Women also make up 57 percent of Social Security recipients and a stunning 68 percent of those 85 or older. The simple truth is that the life expectancy of women exceeds that of men by approximately five years, on average, so many women will depend on these programs longer. Being mindful of these facts in discussing these programs will help reassure female voters that our party understands their unique circumstances.

Republicans have demonstrated sensitivity to women’s issues in the past. In 1983, as a congresswoman from Maine’s 2nd District, I became concerned that the Republican Party seemed to be failing to connect with female voters. I organized a meeting at the White House between President Ronald Reagan and congressional Republican women on how we could mitigate our party’s gender gap by promoting legislation to fix inequities in federal law that adversely affected women, in areas such as child support and pension reform.

President George H.W. Bush made further inroads by nominating Bernadine Healy to be the first female director of the National Institutes of Health in 1991, the same year the agency launched the Women’s Health Initiative, which still provides critical data that challenges existing information on women’s health and allows us to make better, more informed decisions on matters of life and death.

And President George W. Bush strongly supported my proposal to make the child tax credit refundable in 2001 — a first-of-its-kind initiative — because he understood how this policy would help women and children, including single heads of households. The point is, past Republican presidents have heeded the voices of our nation’s women and acted accordingly, with lasting effects.

This is Romney’s threshold moment. He must demonstrate that he would follow the example of other Republican presidents in addressing issues important to women. He must speak concisely and directly about how he’s going to get our country moving again. Indeed, given the recent controversies, he must reach out to women to reassure them that he understands their reality and show them that his agenda is in their best interest.

He has proved time and time again that he is the right man for the job when it comes to a turnaround — and that is precisely what our party and our nation require.

  1. Romney should vigorously, not timidly, disassociate himself from the
extremes within our party by reiterating to the national audience that
the overly rigid language on abortion contained in the GOP platform —
which includes no explicit exceptions for cases of rape, incest or
danger to the life of the mother.

He should also stand up to Grover Norquist and his pledge against the American economy but he will not because it is part of the “PARTY PLATFORM”. HIS PARTY THAT IS! The rest of us are too busy working at call centers trying to collect the last few pennies the poor and middle class had prior to George W and I am not talking about Washington for all you Tea Par-tier’s who cannot see beyond the moral giants that lurk in the molestorie’s on Sunday morning preaching about gays and abortion while advocating for war lords trying to achieve religious domination.

So Olympia’s message is don’t worry about the PARTY PLATFORM  just vote for Romney. Whats a platform anyway? Probably not important especially for a crumbling GOP.

    1. How can Romney disassociate himself from the extremists when he picked Paul Ryan as a running mate? Ryan has co-sponsored many anti-abortion bills with Todd Aikens and he doesn’t believe in exemptions for rape and incest cases.  If you had a daughter who was a victim of rape would you want the government to have the authority to force her to have that child?

      1. Check the percentage of abortions are done for rape and incest. The vast majority is done by convenience. The Democratic party is more akin to the movie Logan’s run. Government control everything.

        1. And the Republicans wanting to control woman’s bodies is a perfect example of the smaller government they are always saying they want?   A little hypocritical.
Very few people agree that abortion is a good thing, but most feel that a woman should have that option available, god knows if she has the child the R’s don’t want to help her while she raises the child.

        2. Then why not include a provision for rape or incest or if the victim is under the age of consent, or if there is a danger to the woman’s health?

      2. Also check out how the restrictive definitions of rape would exclude large numbers of innocents, even if the Ryan/Akin policies were modified.

    2. Romney is a corporate toadie and ultra-flipflopping cardboard phony who OWNS that radical and ridiculous WAR ON WOMEN, WAR ON THE POOR, WAR ON THE MIDDLE CLASS, WAR ON THE ELDERLY platform.  He OWNS it !  And so does every other TeaPublican.  And it is going to be their DOOM come November.

    3. Check out the recent artcile on Summers.  He takes the Norquist deal with the devil (oops, pledge) also.

    4. “Romney should vigorously, not timidly, disassociate himself from the
      extremes within our party ”
He would be flying solo on that flight!

  2. I don’t think you can change a mind set in  people over night.  If the typical republican feels that women’s issues are not as important, then that will take time to change.  However,  the reps. can certainly give the appearance that women’s issues are important and hope that the majority of women on the fence will buy it.
What really concerns me is that Corp.  Am. really runs our Gov. and they support the Rep.  party.  They will not start to hire people back to work until they have who they want in power.  What is wrong with this is that they will rehire at much lower wages and less benefits.  After all, profit is the goal.  Less regulation, a plank in the rep. platform, will assure profit but at the expense of the Am. worker’s quality of life.

      1. Jobs are created when there is demand for the product. If Company A doesn’t wish to take advantage of that, then a new company will! Average Income Americans spending their refunds on home improvements stimulate the economy far more than millionaires tucking their money in shell corporations and trusts in the Cayman Islands!

  3. Most voters will be able to distinguish between Akin and Romney, who has denounced Akin about as thoroughly as he can without traveling to Missouri and shooting the man. Senator Snowe is just taking an opportunity to promote her pet causes.

    1. How will they distinguish them? The GOP platform includes new language that they want to ban abortion with no language for exceptions like rape. Akin and Ryan have co-sponsored numerous pieces of legislation regarding rape and abortion.

Akin isn’t far out from the GOP norm these days. Snowe, however, is.

      1. She may not be on the same page as Akin but in her last term Snowe has voted in lock-step with Leader Mitch McConnell on every vote against women but one.  That was the Blunt amendment and she finally felt free to vote her ‘conscience’ because she is leaving the senate.  She cannot point to a record of voting for the welfare of the State or for the Country.  She has not at all been a sane voice in the senate.  She has time after time joined the Republicans to obstruct everything that President Obama has tried to accomplish.   She has been a huge disappointment and is now trying to find a way to maintain what power she thinks that she has.  I really encourage all to go and see Snowe’s record for yourselves.

        1. Obstruct, all Obama is doing is destructing the Country. Accomplish, yea right and gas at this time is higher than it ever has been, wonder what my fuel bill will be this year.

          1. Radical nonsense.  Gas?  Where was your whining when it went over four bucks a gallon under your hero Bush?  The President has little to no control over that GLOBAL market.  Mad about gas?  Tell your corporate buddies on Wall St. to end the futures speculation which causes much of the added cost.  In fact, just why are you even mad about the cost of gas?  That’s set by the free market, right?  And TeaRadicals love all things “free market”, right?  Your oil corporation heroes are making out like bandits.  Record profits. They are jumping for joy.  You should be ecstatic, right?  Your corporate masters are doing great under the global oil market, just like you LOVE.  Oh, or are you being HYPOCRITICAL AGAIN??  Obama destroying the country?  Try 29 months of job growth, almost 5 million jobs, saved the auto industry, took out Bin Ladin and many other terrorists, very high marks on foreign policy, stopped the REPUBLICAN Great Recession from becoming another Great Depression, … facts hurt don’t they.  But no worries, you can just sit back, slurp up the LIES on FAKE-NEWS and Rush Limpmind, and soak in your bath of right wing delusions.  But come November, reason will win and the silly pathetic TeaRadical party is going to be OVER.

          2. and the deficit is irrelavent. The hunt for Bin Laden was going on before he got into office. Foreign Policy, yea Syria and Iran are good shows. Corportate buddies, like I say Frank and his buddies made the mess in the Savings and Loans. Job growth what a laugh, and how many have we lost to overseas. The fact is he increased the deficit during his time more than any other President. I am sure your  your estatic about that. I did complain when it was high under Bush, but it is getting even higher now, but all D’s see is apparently more money.

    2. He picked as his running mate someone who co-sponsored bills with Akin and voted just like him.  Ryan is just like Akin only Akin wasn’t smart enough to keep his mouth shut and he blew it for the R’s, or at least made it more difficult for them – for which I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to Mr. Akin.

    3. Oh baloney.  Akin just said what most TeaPublicans actually think.  Romney is as much a perpatrator of the TeaRadical war on women as any of the rest these right wing radicals.  And why would he want to shoot his own VP candidate’s best buddy?  Ryan and Akin are like conjoined twins.

  4. From a political harlot who has spent a career raping the taxpayers and protecting perjuring presidents, and other soul mates of the political class, from the same laws she enacts for the rest of us to obey.

  5. Sorry GOP, you reap what you sow… and they have been sowing this mentality for decades. You’re not going to convince people that you care about women when to the core Republican base, they are just incubators.

      1. Radical delusional nonsense.  Yeah, and after they are born, the TeaPublicans throw the children and their mothers to the wolves as “worthless riffraff welfare scum who deserve to starve to death.”  The TeaPublicans are the most twisted thinkers and hypocritical liars and bigots ever to walk the planet.

    1. Don’t even buy into this lame narrative. This is yet one more distraction the dems are feverishly pitching (with a compliant media) since they have absolutely NOTHING to run on other than sowing fear, class warfare, and the vitriol of personal smears. Snowe has been inside the beltway, having marinated in the MSM and dem spin, for too long. Good-bye.

      1. Yeah, that’s a laugh and half.  You can’t handle the truth about your TeaRadicalPublicanNeanderthal party.  The TeaNastyReTHUGlican party put the “N” in nastiness and the “D” in dirty tricks.  So enough whining.  Your party is lost in the dark ages, and come November you’re going to be lost in ELECTION LOSERS LAND.

  6. The Repubs should offer single payer health care and free day care. That might give them a chance.

      1. Yes, free, as in value-added to the taxes you pay, so women can work for their 77cents on the dollar and not have to pay for the privilege by shelling out $1500+ a month for daycare, and not have to shell out an additional $12 grand a year for GD health insurance.

      2. Yes free, as in value -added for the taxes paid by women. Free as in not having to shell out $1500+ a month to pay for the privilege of working for 77 cents on the dollar. Free as in not having to shell out another $12 grand a year for GD health insurance.

    1. To teapublicans, free day care equals public education K-12, and we already know how they feel about that…

  7. I have an idea how the GOP could improve it’s image with women.

Stop having old white religious Christian males make all the decisions for women based on their (incorrect) interpretation of the bible.

    1. and yours is the right interpretation. The Bible talks about repecting women, and also children. Do not forget that God knew us in the womb before were born. That is not an incorrect interpretation.

      1. My interpretation of the Bible, if I even have one, is irrelevent because I don’t try to make laws restricting half the population based on my moral beliefs.

Since you are using scripture to back up your statement, do you make your wife and daughter (if you have either a wife or daughter) stay in a seperate building while they are unclean and only leave the building at night?

Do you cleanse yourself every time you venture forth because you may unwittingly have come in contact with an unclean woman?

      2. Portions of the Bible do indeed say to respect women, but still consider them property and otherwise subjugate them (as too many men do even today).

    2. So instead you would leave it to Harry Reid, Joe Biden, John Kerry, Rahm Emmanuel, Bill Clinton, Al Gore and George Soros to do so? Riiiight.

  8. If any proof was needed that the tea party parrots who currently control the Republican Party are so blinded by their flawed ideology all you have to do is look at Olympia Snowe. Snowe was about the closest thing to a sure thing you could come to in politics. She would have won re-election to her Senate seat in a cakewalk. Except for one small thing. The radical right tea party parrots who are currently in control of the Maine Republican Party. Imagine that an almost guaranteed Republican Senate Seat and they were will to flush it down the toilet because the all knowing tea party parrots didn’t consider Snowe to be what they call a real Republican. Because Snowe did not march in lockstep to the tea party parrot’s flawed ideology they were about to toss her under the proverbial bus for a candidate more to their liking. Snowe’s biggest crime apparently was that she was actually willing to listen to opposing viewpoints and we all know that to do something like that in the eyes of the tea party parrots is akin to treason. If there is one person in the entire State of Maine who owes his success in life to one person it is Maine’s current Secretary of State and Republican candidate for the seat Snowe currently holds. She hired him to be one of her staff, she was there when he ran unsuccessfully for Congress, she was instrumental in his getting a political job with the Small Business Adminstration and probably was a major reason for his rising to the rank he currently holds in the Navy Reserve. When it was time for Snowe to run for re-election where was Charlie. He decided that it was far better to pander to the tea party parrots then to come out in favor of the person who is basically responsible for putting him where he is today. Talk about loyalty. Yep Charlie is loyal. To Charlie and only Charlie. To Chuckin’ Charlie it was more important to chuck Olympia under the bus to gain the support of the tea party parrots then it was to show even a dash of loyalty  Hell even the King of the Tea Party, Paul LePage, had the decency to support Snowe.  Next January when Angus King heads to Washington as Maine’s junior Senator at least we won’t have to worry about hearing the tea party parrots calling him a RINO. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

    1. I respectfully suggest that you look at her record.  She certainly did vote in lockstep with the right wing as Leader McConnell demanded of all his Republican Senators.
The only exception was the Blunt amendment and where was her voice when that bill was passed.
She voted against it but she was silent.
I find it disingenuous for her to be speaking up now.   Surely she knows that what she says should be done by Romney will not be done.  It is yet another way for her to safely stay in the limelight.

      1. Playing both sides? How could a Mainer do that?! Maybe her ambassadorship from a second Obama term is not such a slam-dunk afterall!

  9. All that is evidenced in Saint Snowe’s plea above is that her only interest is in electing a Republican for president.  The only way for Romney to reset is to get rid of Ryan who is on the exact same page as Akin.
Snowe’s long list of Republican initiatives have been completely disavowed by Romney.   So if what she is saying now is what she truly believes she should whole heartedly vote for the re-election of President Obama.

I say again, if she really wanted to do the right thing she would have stayed in the senate and spoken up for what she says she believes.

She is no Margaret Chase Smith.   She has become nothing more than a  shrewd, well spoken political hack.

    1. The attempted Akin tie in simply does not work, no matter how often libs say it. And the faux war on women is just a distraction. November is going to be sweeeet!

      1. Really ?    Paul Ryan and Akin are on the exact same page .  Paul Ryan and Akin have sponsored many anti women bills together.   That is the ‘tie in’.    Akin speaks for the vast majority of the Republican Party as it exists today.   You need to expand your information gathering beyond faux news.

        1. You can’t get more extremist than the president’s position on partial-birth abortion (aka INFANTICIDE), but I do agree with you that Snowe became a hack some time ago.

          1. More radical delusional foolishness.  This is why there are no moderate Republicans anymore.  You are the ever-shrinking TeaRadical party.

  10. Olympia Snowe is the reason that there is no public option in the ACA.  It was taken out to secure her vote and she still voted against it.  Her amendments to the ACA were all included and in the end she still voted against it.  She cleverly and cynically played the President and the other members of the committee and did exactly what she always intended and voted against the bill.

She talks of jobs ??  She has voted against every job initiative that the President has proposed.

    1. She did cast the deciding vote that got the crappy Obamacare legislation out of committee. That’s bad enough…

      1. You mean that legislation FULL of planks that were originally REPUBLICAN ideas before they went completely TeaRadical?  You mean that CENTRIST and MODERATE law that at least tries to get people who aren’t insured some healthcare, unlike the radical TeaExtremists who talk about loving Jesus and yet would condemn people to no healthcare because they are more interested in lining the pockets of their corporate insurance company CEO masters so they can buy more mansions?  Is that the law you are talking about?

  11. ” I have worked for three decades as a staunch advocate to build a “big
tent” party that includes both pro-choice and pro-life Republicans.”

God bless you, Olympia, but if that is true, you have been a complete failure, at least in that aim.

isn’t the official platform more rigid than it was 30 years ago?

    1. Actually the platform is not, but why bother to check when you can rely on NPR or MSNBC for that “special” kind of truth you seek?

  12. Oh, please, Sen. Snowe.  Why in the world would you defend in any way this man who chose as his running mate an extremist who agreed with Akin 100% of the time?  Sorry, there is no defense of this ticket.  Maybe it’s time to change parties or become an independent.

      1. I beg your pardon, but you are sorely mistaken. It is not the left that wants to make it criminal to have an abortion regardless of whether you were raped. It is not the left that is unwilling to provide equal pay for equal work. It is not the left that wants to turn back the clock on women’s rights 6 decades.

        1. Well, it’s certainly not the right that wants any of your listed items. By the way, there is a disparity in pay in the White House between men and women that do the same job. In the White House!! Don’t think that’s a Republican thing.

          1. Clearly you do not follow the issues as closely as you think. The GOP wants to overturn Roe v. Wade and has been very clear about that. Akin is just the most obnoxious example of right wing thinking but he is not the only member of the GOP that believes that there is such a thing as “legitimate rape”.

          2. So wait, you say the right is not trying to make abortion a criminal act even in cases of rape. But you are clearly someone who is on the right on the issues, and you call it murder. So you just validated my point.

Trying to say that right wingers don’t want what they clearly do want is either an outright lie or an attempt to use Jedi mind tricks.

          3. “Well, it’s certainly not the right that wants any of your listed items.” Uhhhh, actually yes, it is. Those things that Mimi2kool listed? The GOP is actively working to make each and every one of them a reality.

      2. Delusional foolishness.  You people just make it up as you go.  The TeaPublicans are losing women in DROVES, and it is getting worse by the second. The TeaPubs are going to get CRUSHED in November.

        1. Since you know absolutely nothing about the Tea Party, I’m not surprised that you are mistaken.

  13. Sen. Snowe – I realize that Maine is ultra-liberal and unaware of the goings on around the nation. More and more women are joining the Republican party, especially since the Tea Party got into full swing. We respect women more than the left ever thought of respecting them. And we respect the right of the unborn to live.

The left uses women’s issues to push their politics, just as they use minorities, the poor, and the illegals to push their politics. To the progressives, women are no more than a voting base. And that’s why so many are leaving the left and joining the right.

    1. I guess the pollsters haven’t been able to get in touch with those women as all the polls show Obama leading (R)money by a low of 10% to a high of 20%.
I love the way you use your own ideas rather than facts.

    2. Ultra-liberal?  LOL.  And the R/TP is pushing all right.  Pushing women’s (and other key issues0 right out the door.

  14. Sorry Olympia, but your party has gone TeaRadical, and there is no turning back for them.  Ronald Reagan is considered a RINO liberal in today’s TeaRadical party.  Don’t waste your time and breath.  The damage is not only done, it is worsening by the minute as they wage an all-out war on women.  They want to go back to barefoot and pregnant women who don’t leave the kitchen and “honor and obey” the man.  Plain and simple as that.  They are lost in the 1800’s.  And this is only part of the reason they are going to get CRUSHED at the polls in a few months.

  15. I think the GOP has reached the point of no return in regard to women’s issues. Unfortunately, the reasonable positions she presents are no longer welcome in her party, which has become increasingly dominated by the radical right wing. It is telling that she found herself unable to make a difference anymore and decided to retire from the Senate.

  16. Sorry, Senator Snowe.  I don’t agree that Romney has done enough for women especially what his platform, VP, and other R party members do to degrade women. Too little, too late.
However, I’m also sorry that you won’t be around to try to restore some sanity to your fractured Party.

  17. If the Republican Party and the Democratic party power brokers wish to gain the vote of women, they need to address the problem of support for women who are usually the people who end up being the single parent. They need to push for medical help that parents are finding hard to cope with when children are carried to term with known life long health problems. They should recognize the disparity of care that has always existed between the haves and have nots. Both parties need to rid themselves of th extremists in their parties.

  18. Olympia Snowe is adamantly pro-abortion and has millions in her coffers from the groups supporting the killing of unborn babies.  She does not speak for all women.  Nor should she be telling Mitt Romney what to do.  Paul Ryan is adamantly pro-life, so I am sure she does not welcome his presence on the presidential ticket.

  19. Senator Olympia Snowe, “The Cleopatra of Maine” made the single most chilling remark I have ever heard any politician make.

I have read the works of Lenin, Marx, and Mao Tse-tung but have never found anything which bespoke an equally depraved morality.

During a debate over the ban on partial birth abortion (which she opposed) Snowe said that partial birth abortion is a good thing because it allows a mother to make wise economic choices for her remaining children.

  20. If you will read the biography of Margaret Chase Smith, you will discover that the liberal elite made Senator Smith famous because she gave a speech in which she attacked Senator Joe McCarthy.

In her autobiography, Smith writes that Walter Lippmann, the Socialist, encouraged her to give the speech, and the speech was written by another left-winger.

Never forget that abortion on demand  and gay marriage are Marxist ideals.

In other words, our first famous feminist woman senator became famous because she was a dupe of the Reds.

      1. And leftists are that willing to call names without even consulting the facts.

Reasonable men deals in ideas not in name calling.

Anyone who wants to verify  that Margaret Chase Smith’s speech against Joe McCarthy was prompted by the socialist Walter Lippmann and written by someone else only has to consult her autobiography.

It is equally easy to verify that feminism, abortion on demand, and gay marriage originate in Marxism goals.

          1. How is someone even supposed to respond rationally to that? The issues being discussed are about politics, not religion. Though I know that people on the right frequently confuse the two.

  21. The only image that Snowe is interested in is her own.   She really must think that ‘the people’ are stupid.
