BREWER – Ruth Esther (Burton) Rogers went home to be with her Lord Aug. 28, 2012, comforted by the presence of her family. She was born Oct. 14, 1927, in Bangor, the daughter of George F. and Esther (Eastman) Burton.
She was a 1945 graduate of Cony High School and attended the University of Maine. Ruth worked six years as a service representative for New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. She married Clayton in 1950 and after taking a few years off to have three boys, was hired as a teacher aide for the special education class at Capri Street School, Brewer. Later she was hired as a teacher for the Head Start Program, Brewer. During this time she earned her Child Development Associate accreditation and became the Head Start center director, retiring after 15 years. Ruth loved the Lord and was a member of Columbia Street Baptist Church, where she had many close friends. Since 1946 she was active there in many ways. She was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, church clerk, was active in various committees and was a member of Maxell Sunday School Class and Ruth Harris Circle. She cared deeply about her community, giving comfort to neighbors in need and by serving for several years on the board of the King’s Daughters Home, where young women were given a safe place to live.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Clayton A. Rogers; three sons, Timothy, David and wife, Ada, and Neal; six grandchildren, Aaron, Michael, Justin, Anthony, Katrina and Zachary; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Cleeesther Rogers of Seattle and Velma Rogers of Hampden; many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, with the Rev. Dr. Foster Williams officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Orrington. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately after the service Thursday.
