Republican Paul Ryan now says he didn’t run a marathon in less than three hours as he claimed in a nationally broadcast interview.
The vice presidential hopeful acknowledged Saturday he had misstated his marathon time by more than an hour. He released a statement correcting the record after Runner’s World magazine found evidence he had completed one marathon, in 1990, and finished in just over four hours.
Ryan told radio host Hugh Hewitt last month he had run a marathon in “under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.” That’s a pace of less than 7 minutes per mile for the 26.2 mile course — fast for recreational runners.
Ryan has made much of his physical fitness, pointing out that he is devoted to the difficult Pt0X workout, which involves involves intensive cardio training combined with yoga, karate and other exercises. He frequently leads these workouts for other members of Congress.
Ryan says he should have rounded his marathon time to four hours, not three. His time at the 1990 Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minn., is listed as 4 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds.
Who cares! Oh, wait. If he would mislead the public about something so minor as a marathon, what else would he do. Come on BDN. Start printing the stories that matters.
It’s part of a bigger picture of a person who will seemingly say anything he wants and report it as a fact. Do you really want a leader who is so careless with the truth, even with details as simple as his own life experience?
If the honesty of a candidate’s words doesn’t matter in your opinion, then what does? (And would you react the same way if Obama had said the same thing?)

I ran a PR in a 5K last weekend and when someone asked me what my time was I couldn’t remember. Give the guy a break, he is only running for the second highest office in the land. At least he can remember how many states there are in the US, how many letters are in the word JOBS, and what religion he is a member of, unlike some people we know.
If you had run 4:01:25 in your only marathon you would always remember that you did not run 3:59:59 or faster. I’m sure he suffered being out there that long and it just kills him he did not break 4 hours. He is claiming to run an hour and twenty minutes faster then he did.
This would be equal to you saying you ran your 5k, 10 minutes faster then you actually did.

Why didn’t he just say that he didn’t remember his time, only that he finished? It would have saved a lot of back peddling, ums, and ers. I have noticed over the years that politicians most of the time have too big of an ego to admit that they don’t remember. They think it is better to mis-remember ( a quote from the Rocket), than to admit no recollection at all. I guess it is better to make yourself out to be a liar, as opposed to absent minded.

You might want to check the facts during those years – we thrived. When the Dims took over Congress in 2007 (including Obama, Pelosi and Reid) we had 5% unemployment, no financial crisis, $1.70 gas and an $8 trillion dollar deficit.

As for the deficit, every sane economist has stated multiple times that 1/4 of the deficit under Obama is from the costs of two unfunded wars under Bush, 1/4 because of the unfunded Medicare Part D passed by the lame duck Republican House in 2006, 1/4 because of the Bush Tax Cuts and 1/4 because of Obama’s stimulus. So even if Obama had not done anything to stop the economic freefall he inherited from Bush, the deficit would still be 3/4 of what it is.
When Obama tookover from Bush the country was losing 800,000 jobs a month, since then Obama has added over 4 million private sector jobs but the economy is still trying to get over the failed Bush Republican economic ploicies of the past 30 years.
AS for Republican control of Congress, they have the majorityin the House and a filibuster prove minority in the Senate, effectively stopping any Obama policies that would help the economy. And, please do not say that Republican’s have any idea other than more tax cuts for the wealthy to fix the economy whiel destroying the social safety nets for people who need help because of misguided REpublican economic policies.

Obama preached on a platform of hope only in the end to offer the American people a record of failed leadership thus leaving a nation in despair.
So wrong on so many points.
1. Stimulus saved upwards of 3.5 million jobs that would have been lost if we had followed the Republican plan. How would that be best for the American People if all those jobs had been lost?
2. The SUPREME COURT ruled that the ACA is CONSTITUTIONAL. Just because you don’t like the Supreme Courts ruling does not make the ACA unconstitutional.
3. The increase in regulations under Obama is less than teh increase under Bush and other previous Presidents.
4. Economists agree that 75% of the deficit spending is caused by two unfunded wars, Medicare Part D. andTax Cuts for the Wealthy, all done under GW Bush’s Administration. Without those 3 items there would be little deficit spending.
5. The weak dollar policy is in the hands of the Fed, which has the majority of it’s Board Members are Republican Appointees.
6. Obama’s policys have created over 4 million new private sector jobs since he took office. The remaining private sector jobs were lost under Bush when he was losing 800,000 jobs a month. Publis sector jobs are down since he took office. Iwould thing you would welcome that being a RWer.
7. Income dropped 10% from 2000 to 2009, all under the Bush Administration. Median income is increasing under Obama.
8. Housing prices increased by 2.5% last month. The Housing crash occured while Bush was in office. The housing bubble popped in 2007-2008 and Obama had not won the election or was he even running then.
9. In July of 2008 gas prices were over $4 a gallon and fell to $2 a gallon by Jan 2009 because of the worst economic decline since the Great Depression, caused by Failed Republican Economic Policies. Gas is just now getting back to July 2008 levels.
10. The number of people on Food Stamps is a direct result of Failed Republican Economic policies and the Republican efforts to block any and all of Obama’s policies.

I think this is the sign of a severe personality disorder. Politicians have large egos. Otherwise they wouldn’t be politicians, and people who run for president or put forth grandiose schemes for the people to follow have egos even larger than the run-of-the-mill types. But for Ryan to make a claim about his sub 3-hour marathon when it wasn’t true is the sign of an extreme narcissist.
I have often encountered people in leadership positions who make claims that are without truth relying on time, memory, and the absence of contradictory facts to allow that false claim to remain out there. I have no doubt that Ryan’s claim to the sub 3-hour marathon is not the only time he has made a false claim. I’m sure that that is Paul Ryan being Paul Ryan. But this false claim was easily checked.

Looking through the comments here, it just drives me frigging crazy how this can be a partisan issue. I’m a conservative libertarian, libertarian conservative, libertarian with conservative leanings, or whatever the heck label you want to throw on me, but a lie is a lie is a lie. And these days Paul Ryan is the Rosie Ruiz of American politics. This would have been an apt comparison even before the curious story of Mr. Ryan’s own marathon came to light.
