SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A teenage girl escaped injury Tuesday afternoon when the car she was driving collided with a tractor-trailer, police said.
The 16-year old girl from Scarborough, who was driving on a learner’s permit, attempted to make a right-hand turn out of a Maine Mall parking lot onto Gorham Road around noon when the collision happened, according to South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark.
The truck, operated by Henry Bishop, 63, of Ludlow, Mass., was also attempting to turn right at the same intersection, and the rig took a wide turn and struck the girl’s vehicle, which was to the right of the truck when both vehicles attempted to turn, Clark said.
The girl was unable to pass the truck before being struck, the lieutenant said, but the damage to her car proved to be minor and the girl was able to drive her vehicle away.
Clark said it’s unclear what Bishop was hauling. He was driving a truck owned by Penske Truck Leasing out of Reading, Mass., and it suffered minor damage.

Wow what a news flash. Next up people hiking in the woods were bitten by Black Flies and Mosquitoes.
I was thinking the same thing, why is this news?
Great Maine news
Got to make use of that Portland reporting somehow. You should have realized when it was announced that Bangor reporting is going Portland it was the chance to get more breaking news like this
Glad she wasn’t hurt too badly. The lesson here is to remember trucks need 2 lanes to turn. And know where the blind spot is because the driver has no idea you’re there.
Is this an example of BDN’s ‘news’ presence in PPH’s territory? Don’t waste the time.
I’d call this an example of why we need training for all drivers on how to interact with large commercial vehicles. Since she was on a learners permit, the licensed driver in the car with her should have known enough to tell her where she could and could not be in relation to the truck….I’d have to say they failed. Having ridden in one of these fairly extensively, it’s quite an eye opener to see just how often they have to stop quick or swerve to avoid the “four-wheeler” as they call cars who just did something stupid like pass them on the right or not yield when they were supposed to.
No cracks about a teen driver or an elderly driver? People you are slipping.
