ELLSWORTH, Maine — No one was injured Wednesday afternoon when a local woman drove her car into a Christian Ridge Road residence, an accident that likely totaled her vehicle and caused an estimated $15,000 damage to the home.

The driver, Alicia Bell, 32, of Ellsworth, told police she hit the gas instead of the brakes as she was driving east on Red Bridge Road at the intersection of Christian Ridge Road, according to Police Lt. Harold Page. Bell’s 2006 Subaru station wagon went across the road, over a ditch and through the yard at 201 Christian Ridge Road.

Bell swiped a small tree and then hit the house around 1 p.m. Her passenger-side airbag deployed, but Page said the woman was uninjured.

“She was shook up but declined any medical attention,” Page said. “She said she was fine.”

The homeowner, George Patten, was inside the house with his daughter, according to Patten’s caregiver, Janet Hannigan.

Hannigan said the car struck the house and wrecked a portion of cement foundation and vinyl siding. The vehicle also pushed a wooden staircase away from the home.

“The stairs are off to the side, and I can’t tell if they can be put back in or if they’ll have to be rebuilt,” Hannigan said.

Page said no charges would be filed in the accident. An eyewitness told police it didn’t seem like Bell was speeding prior to the accident.

  1. I have to admit when I read the headline I thought here we go again another elderly driver. Boy was I wrong. Apologies to the elderly drivers.

  2. I just can’t believe that she didn’t blame it on Unexplained Sudden Acceleration – congrats to her for telling the TRUTH.

    1. “flagged for review”

What  a harmless comment, and what a pantywaist newspaper for deleting it.   They take everything so seriously, and from a rigid politically-correct perspective.

      1. You know, politically correct means to speak in a way that doesn’t insult people.  Obviously people like you are so mean-spirited that being offensive is just a way of life.

        1. Wow, talk about mean-spirited and offensive!  I think you’re just making it up as you go along.  If you’re not, you should be able to tell me what it was in my deleted comment that you think is so bad.

So go ahead:  What did I say?

        1. I’m not sure I can say it without being permanently banned from posting comments here.  But I’ll try to tiptoe around and give you some hints.

First, I’ll say that it was a mild comment that some readers might find amusing.  Second, it might offend sanctimonious and rigidly pc readers.  Third, it was very short – 4 words I think.  Fourth, it had to do with drivers.  Finally, one of the sexes might find it offensive, but not if she/he had at least some sense of humor.

  3. How do you, while driving, take your foot off the gas to hit the brakes and hit the same pedal? Gas again? And if your car didn’t slow down, you push the gas pedal further down? If you did that, you need to go back to driving school. I think what we have here is a great way to cover up that you were texting… he he he.

    1. Having two pedals seems to confuse many drivers. Maybe that’s why the third pedal has been all but phased out as too confusing…..

    2. Yes, but you cant hide that any more. With that little black box in your auto and the checking with your cell phone provider, yous ain’t getting away with  “oh i hit the wrong pedal” excuse.
So heads up all you texting mongers, find another story line cause this one just doesn’t fly.

  4. “Page said no charges would be filed in the accident.”

What is up with this?  It seems like every time some incompetent dolt crashes their car, as long as they are not drunk or high, they don’t get charged with anything.

Do laws not apply to stupid people?

  5. Accidentally hitting the gas instead of brake lol.  That’s like not wanting to fall off a cliff so you run off it as fast as you can.
