BANGOR, Maine — A Glenburn man who attempted to take a razor from Walmart on Friday morning without paying for it was arrested after the responding officer found diverted prescription drugs in his pocket, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

Michael Whittington, 52, was caught trying to shoplift items worth $53 and was found with alprazolam, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, the sergeant said.

Officer Doug Smith arrested Whittington and charged him with felony theft, upgraded to a Class C crime due to prior convictions, and possession of scheduled drugs, Edwards said.

Whittington was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Monday afternoon, the sergeant said.
