ROCKLAND, Maine — A 19-year-old Cushing man made his initial court appearance Monday morning after police said he broke into a restaurant last week and stole a bag containing $3,600 in cash.

Brian B. Burch was in Rockland District Court to hear the charges of burglary and theft lodged against him.

Burch was taken to the Knox County Jail on Friday morning originally arrested by Thomaston Police Sgt. Tim Hoppe for failure to pay more than $1,000 in fines imposed on prior cases. Hoppe found Burch sleeping Friday morning at the end of Sunset Terrace, according to a police report filed in court.

After Burch identified himself to Hoppe, the officer determined there were outstanding warrants for failure to pay fines. As Hoppe was going to arrest the man, Burch said he needed to grab a bag behind a guardrail that contained his life savings, the police report stated.

The bag was a bank bag that had the name Smokestack Grill on it and contained $3,400.

The Thomaston officer contacted the Camden Police Department which notified the owner of the Smokestack Grill in Camden who determined that a bag containing $3,600 had been removed from his desk. The bag had been placed in the desk Thursday night.

Burch told officers different stories about where he got the money. He said he had earned the money doing some roofing work but the man who Burch said employed him said he paid Burch only about $160 for a little work done since the suspect had gotten out of jail on Aug. 22. Burch also told officers that his grandmother had given him the bank bag. Police contacted the grandmother who denied the claim and said she had never heard of the restaurant.

Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick collected evidence from the restaurant and took a DNA swab from Burch.

The bail commissioner set bail at $1,000 cash Friday.

  1. Alright, I have read dozens and dozens of “stupid’ comments on the NEWS over the years, but you must agree, there has never been anyone STUPIDER than this person.

    1. As if he’s the first person to steal from a business in this state? At least he wasn’t stealing drugs from a pharmacy… Or killing someone… Or geeking out on bath salts. Come on, were you born yesterday, or in a convent?

  2. No, there is no question, this guy has gotta find another line of work, second story man just ain’t gonna be his thing.

  3. And the sad part is when you look at his photo he looks like hes proud of it  Like hey look at what im holding lol

  4. People need to try and remember that  the embarrassed relatives of these criminals will read these comments… It’s not like he killed someone. Your negative comments aren’t going to help, just make you fools look like you have nothing better to do with your time then pick on a 19 year old kid who makes bad decisions. Spend that time helping local kids in your community if you want to make a difference, thanks.

    1.  Then tell him to stop being stupid and become a better member of society. He wont make it at MSP. The inmates knew who he is already and are waiting for him.

      1. You’re acting as though his family hasn’t tried to help. You don’t know us, or Brian. You must think you’re cute, making threats via inmates at a prison? Get a clue.
