BANGOR, Maine — A 20-year-old Bangor man was arrested Wednesday evening on several charges after he reportedly made a rude gesture to a city police sergeant and then struck a curb and sideswiped a van while trying to get away.

The series of incidents that led to the arrest of Gregg Marshall began about 6:30 p.m. near the Subway sandwich shop at the corner of Essex and State streets, Bangor police Sgt. Garry Higgins said Wednesday night.

“What happened was, I was driving by the Subway and I saw someone who appeared to be flipping me off,” Higgins said. Then, as Higgins watched, a man driving a black Subaru later identified as Marshall quickly pulled out onto Essex Street and almost immediately struck a curb, hitting it hard enough to drive his front passenger wheel into the wheel well, Higgins said.

Higgins said he attempted to get Marshall to pull over, but Marshall kept on going, sideswiping a van as he did so. “He finally stopped because the wheel wouldn’t let him go any farther,” Higgins said.

While the van wound up with scratches and dents, Marshall’s Subaru “suffered a lot of damage,” Higgins said. A wrecker service needed to be called in to remove it from the roadway.

Marshall was arrested on charges of operating under the influence, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and possession of a spring-assisted knife, Higgins said.

As for the middle finger?

“He said he wasn’t doing it to me,” Higgins said. “He was just mad at the world,” Higgins said, adding that Marshall told him he had an argument with his girlfriend earlier.

Marshall remained behind bars at Penobscot County Jail late Wednesday night, Higgins said.

  1. “He finally stopped because the wheel would let him go any farther,” Higgins said.

Copy desk to Paragraph 4. Copy desk to Paragraph 4.

  2. Even if he WAS telling the Sergeant that he’s a “number one” guy-it’s not illegal and the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled on just that question-flipping off a police officer-and said that it is protected free speech; the ruling was made in the early 1970s.

  3. Mr. Marshall is “mad at the world” which caused him flipping off the officer…..C’mon man……Crazy…..

  4. Another victim who is mad at the world for all of his problems and bad decisions that he made…. Give me a break!  Glad to hear no one was hurt in this rediculous incident.

  5. Remember, when waving to the nice police officer, be sure to use ALL your fingers, smile, and they will return the gesture.
On the other hand, the traditional middle finger wave at the nice police officer, will cause the “blue frown”, usually resulting in the outcome stated in the article.
    Advice to Gregg:
When “mad at the world”, stay home, drink yourself silly, flip yourself off, you deserve it.
You will like the end result much better.

  6. At twenty, he could be charged with possession by consumption, he is still a minor.

Time to wake up and smell the coffee and I do mean COFFEE!!
