As midcoast real estate fantasies go, the islands in the Penobscot Bay are hard to beat.
A beautiful home in a place like Vinalhaven is close enough to feel attainable while being just enough removed to be seductive, representing an entirely different way of living in and experiencing this part of Maine.
But what if you already live on one of the islands? What’s the best way to escape the hustle and bustle when you’ve already escaped the hustle and bustle?
One potential answer: A 1.9-acre private island just off Vinalhaven’s Old Harbor with a little cabin that looks like something straight out of a Wyeth painting.
Burying Island, as the bit of land is called, has been in the same family for around 25 years; they have a house on Vinalhaven, and use the smaller island property for everything from picnics to camping, and for putting up summertime guests.
The property is now on the market — island, furnished 209-square-foot cabin and a mooring, too — for $399,000. Which doesn’t seem all that bad as private islands go.
