EDDINGTON, Maine — For unknown reasons, an Isuzu Rodeo with two people inside went off the right side of Route 9 early Thursday morning, hit some small trees, went airborne twice and then crashed into a large tree, Lt. Wesley Hussey said.
“Both occupants — a male and a female — were deceased at the scene,” said the Maine State Police lieutenant, who commands Troop E in Orono.
Speed was a factor in the deadly crash, Hussey said.
Troopers are still trying to positively identify the two people in the small SUV, which was heading east when the crash occurred at about 12:28 a.m. near the junction of Norman D Lane, located about three-quarters of a mile before Route 46.
“The vehicle, a 2007 Isuzu Rodeo, was traveling eastbound on Route 9 when it went off the right side of the road,” Hussey said. “It struck some small trees and rocks and it became airborne on two separate occasions and struck a very large tree.”
The deceased were adults in their early 30s, the lieutenant said. He declined to disclose in whose name the SUV was registered, could not say whether the man or woman was driving, and said it was too early to tell whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the double fatal.
The bodies of the two victims were taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, which is tasked with determining how they died and officially identifying them, Hussey said.
State police had hoped to release the names Thursday afternoon, but “our efforts to positively identify those occupants is ongoing,” the state police lieutenant said at about 3 p.m. “It will be tomorrow at the soonest and maybe beyond, before we will have positive ID.”
While the medical examiner works to identify the man and woman who died, state police accident reconstruction investigators are trying to determine what led up to the deadly crash.
“We really don’t know what caused them to leave the road,” Hussey said.

No info about this tragedy but there sure have been a # of ‘cross over’ accident fatalities.
Why don’t you wait until you have more information before you report. This tells us nothing!!
My thoughts exactly !!!!!!!!!!!!!! This kind of crap drives me nuts, esp. if you have relatives or friends that live in the area. All you do is wonder and wait for more information.
It sounds like somebody at the BDN is listening to a scanner and reporting from that.
They do update articles and the one I’m reading right now tells me a lot about what took place.
If the BDN did not have information out on this accident as soon as they got it, you all would be complaining that they waited too long to report. Have some respect for those involved. They will not publish names until all family members have been notified.
If you really do not like the BDN, spend less time reading it…
Isn’t it funny how that works? Yet I do the same thing! I hear things on the scanner and wonder what it was who it was and whatnot and get angry when there is no article for me to get my info on! But I also know that when there is a death they cannot release the name(s) until family is notified or can make a positive ID. Guess some just need something to complain about on here and it’s BDN that gets the blunt of it! :)
The story told us what happened, as well as where, when, but not who -out of respect for their relatives. What do you want?
Correct spelling and accurate facts. Her “where” is incorrect, and her “what happened” was non existent in the original piece.
here’s a responsible journalist’s choice according to Debbie.
1. Wait until the ALL the facts are known before reporting. No such thing as a developing story.
2. Just make up stuff
Was not a crossover accident. Single vehicle crash.
I think the poster was referring to the crossover SUV vehicle type. The auto industry likes that term because it implies it’s more like a car and not such a gas guzzler as the big SUV’s.
If this is the tragic accident my family and I were second on the scene for, which it seems to match the time and area, it was quite horrific and our hearts go out to the family.
Encountering this accident had to be absolutely heart wrenching. I’ve been there. Responders
are already on site doing what they can do but your heart is going out to the injured, deceased and families. You want to help but there is nothing you can do at that point. It takes a fews days to ‘shake it’. Very sad.
Lots of deaths on Maine roads this year. Sad. R.I.P. and condolences to the families involved with this tragedy.
The only wrong info i see is the year of the rodeo. It was older then that. Everything elses seems right.
Well, technically the name of the road is wrong, too. Norman D Lane, not Normandy Lane…
Two people are dead but all you care about is the proper spelling of a road. That is pretty pathetic.
No, actually, I used to live on Route 9, have seen accidents there, have lots of family there AND have lost family there. I have been checking this story constantly. I was simply commenting on someone else’s comment that everything else in the story was accurate…For those who live here, and are concerned, they might like to know where it occurred, and the correct spelling of a road can offer a better sense of the “where” than a misspelling.
I think Tracy’s point is the BDN reporter can’t even report something that simple accurately. Makes you wonder if the reporters are working on some type of commission base these days – how many fast reports can they get in on a daily basis ?? ;o)~
Where do you come up with this stuff? Commission? Count the stories that she covers over the next week. I doubt any of us would want to work the hours that she does to cover anything from city council meetings to car accidents -morning-noon and night. Give the kid a break.
The BDN was right on this one. The name of the little lane comming off RT. 9 is indeed Norman D. Lane. It’s a private lane (driveway) and a play on words (or spelling). Check it wout next time you head down east.
I’m not saying excessive speed was a factor in this crash, but for sure The Airline has turned into The Down East / Maritime Speedway. Need more police patrols to slow things down and not just at the well known speed traps along the road.
they have corrected the spelling since I first read the article…
I will never understand why some folks are so irritated by the BDN reporting what it has. John Jackson(post below) drove by this very soon after it happened as did other people-he probably appreciates some information about the wreck he saw. Something is better than nothing. The story will fill in as facts become available. May these folks and their loved ones find peace.
sounds like that accident in prospect . maybe a mechanical issue
I would agree with you if this made the paper, but it didn’t. The Web isn’t monolithic and the BDN doesn’t have the luxury of being able to stand still. If they got beaten to the story by 2 hours waiting on phone calls would you also say they were doing a disservice to their readers?
I might agree IF the BDN had not removed my post. If they have time to edit comments, they have time to edit stories.
Regardless of the circumstances what a terrible loss. When an accident occurs in the wee hours of the morning people automatically assume it is drug or alcohol related. Just remember many people are going to or coming from work at this time or traveling through our wonderful state. So sorry for the families. Be careful out there!
theres a ton of wildlife on that road, especially early AM
On Rt. 9………… Could be traveling from EMMC. Traveled that alot over the years , not good, other drivers, widlife or just plan tired!!
This is not going to press. This is a real time update as they have it online. It will be different when in the actual paper. Keep in mind you are online not reading the paper.
It is obnoxious for people to get on here and read the BDN every day and complain about the articles. These people can read so I would assume they would be smart enough to figure out that the information they are getting here is close to real time information, which some of us really like. They edit the articles when they have more information and also out of respect for family they always hold information until family is notified. Besides, what kind of miserable life do these people have that all they do is sit behind their computer and leave negative comments on every article. We should be thankful that we are fortunate enough to live in a country where we have the resources to be able to read real time news events.
A bit harsh doncha think?
She does a great job seeking the info that is available & who knows
what limitations are placed on her by the BDN.
Guessing that she doesn’t have an unlimited (or any for that matter)
expense account or freedom to go into the weeds to dig stuff out so she’s
relying on contacts, police reports, etc. The editors write the headline…
I’ve had some dealings with Ms. Ricker. I’ve found her to be forthright, hard working, and dedicated to accurate reporting without bias. You could not be more wrong. She covers a wide variety of news stories and works from early morning-till late at night very often. She’s easy to reach at the news if you have some concerns about her reporting. Go ahead call her.
I have as well and agree. I have never experienced her to be dishonest, promote sensationalism or anything but factual.
Re: the crossover comment in the beginning of the article it says the car went off the right side of the road. Of cours I realize either side of the road could be the right side depending on the direction the car was traveling, but I automatically envisioned the car going off the side of the road which was on their right side. I’m very gratefull to be able to access the Bangor Daily free of charge. It allows me to keep up on the news , check obituaries & report to my Mom who has macular degeneration.
Seems like there have been an unusually large # of fatal car accidents in Maine this year.
The deceased were 38 and 52 respectively, not in their early 30s…the woman was a wonderful person…and i wish that the report did not convey such a mystery about the crash….it was a simple accident….the car was not in good shape….this was a good woman….there need be no speculation about anything untoward going on to cause the crash….
What a shame. My condolences to the families.
I say we nuke the whole lower end of Main Street. What were these people thinking?Meanwhile a family morns the loss of their loved ones……perhaps a little more important than than the content of this story.
what is not correct in this article?
I know the lady that passed away in this accident. I don’t her terribly well, but she was very close with my mother, in fact, they were to going for a walk together later that morning. My mother is devastated by the loss of her dear friend. I remember her as nice lady, very sociable. We too, are unsure of what led to the accident. She is not in her early 30s but closer to in around her 50’s, she was very pretty. Our family has praying for her family in their time of this unexpected grief.
