TOWNSHIP 9, RANGE 5, Maine — Logs were thrown all over Route 11 when a tractor-trailer truck and pickup collided Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported, state police said Thursday.
Robert Sacco, 60, of Ohio was southbound on Route 11 at about 11 a.m. when Mark Lake, 43, of Stacyville, tried to pass him in a tractor-trailer loaded with tree-length logs and Sacco tried to turn left into a woods road, state police said.
The collision threw the log truck into a ditch, scattering logs, state police said. Lake was hauling tree-length logs owned by Qualey Ranch of Sherman.
Both men were wearing seat belts and were not hurt. Route 11 was limited to one lane of traffic for several hours and both vehicles took heavy damage and were towed from the scene, state police said.
Trooper Jared Sylvia responded to the accident, assisted by Sgt. Brian Harris of the Maine State Police and Troopers Dennis Quint and Jill Monahan.

This does not surprise me, a lot of these truckers will not slow down and do not care about anyone else on this road. If you travel Rt. 11 much you see this all the time. Also when meeting them on a turn they are often on your side of the road. Lucky that they walked away from this accident.
And they are driving the 45mph speed limit either!
What a stupid thing to say.. Those truckers have families and obligations of their own. They work very hard to make ends meet and certainly do not want to be involved in accidents that cause them to be out of work. I see more idiots pulling out in front of trucks unsafely so they don’t have to follow them … They do not stop as fast as cars do, so please be careful.
Just because you do not agree with someone does not make them stupid. You need to get a clue on how to respond to someone else’s comments. You are one of the problem’s in this world with your attitude. Until you have been on this road and seen some of the actions you have no right to contradict my comment. Ask the mother of 4 dead sisters in the town of Ashland and see how she feels about the driving of some of the truckers.
Word on the street is that the hunter in the PU was on the extreme right side of the road nearly stopped and when the TT went to go by, the PU pulled across in front of him.
It appears that the truck driver should get a ticket for not maintaining control of his vehicle. too bad things like this give good drivers a bad rap.
The truckers think they own the roads. And Rt 11 north of Medway is a joke. They ride your butt, pass in dangerous places over solid lines and all. I’m doing ten over posted if not more at times and in a truck myself. Can’t imagine the poor folks in small cars. Couldn’t tell you what the truckers are in a hurry for. It’s not like they aren’t working at the time. I don’t know how many times I felt like getting a tag on one of these jerks but it’s usually very hard to read and following a trucker on Rt 11 could be very dangerous itself. Tons of things could happen there…
This happened Tuesday and it’s finally news worthy Thursday afternoon. Thank goodness for Blackwater Rd. or my husband would’ve been hours getting home from the mill in Masardis after deivering his load of logs. Sometimes the quickest way from Rt. 11 to Rt. 1 is thru the good ole woods roads :). He wasnt the only log truck to do just that!
It’s so odd. Truckers are responsible for so many accidents, but I NEVER hear of any legislation to change it. They fall asleep, run into houses, pass people at ridiculous speeds, take corners too fast and roll over. Like that poor case in Jackman where a trucker rolled his load of logs into a house and killed a young boy. NO CHARGES? Negligent homicide? Reckless operation?
Yup :-/
Should be interesting what 4 state police will have to say on this one ???
Not to demeen what you are saying because I agree with you but I see the exact same thing with drivers in regular automobiles that cause just as much damage if not more in some cases. Its not the vehicle…it is the people who drive them.
you need to ask yourself why you are so angry at a total stranger’s opinion.
Actually UGHHH65, I’m not angry at all. However, I see more motorists than I do truckers causing accidents. Idiots on their cell phones changing lanes without signals, texting messages while driving 60 MPH, inconsistent speeds while using their phones, pulling out in front of big trucks so they don’t have to follow, etc. They have no regard to these truckers who are just trying to make a living. I have relatives who get up at 3 AM to start their day and they often don’t get home until 8 PM. You should hear the stories I hear about people like you ! Trust me they do NOT want to be in accidents causing damage to their rigs and have their insurance premiums sky-rocket !!
You need to ask yourself why you feel it necessary to defend someone who is saying that most truckers “do not care about anyone else on this road”… It’s an ignorant statement to make so why don’t you and Ms. jobieday start using your cell phones to take PICTURES OF THESE TRUCKS WHO ARE TAILGATING AND TERRORIZING the traffic on Rt 11 ??? Have you thought about calling the State Police or do you think sitting at your computer and spewing your venom on the internet will solve your problem ??
Because alot of them DONT care Kick. I agree that not all truckers are that way because I know a few who are excellent drivers. And I am not sticking up for anyone really. It just seemed you are very angry by what you wrote to Jobie. Calling people Stupid when you dont know them is being kind of immature. Noone needs to take pictures Kick. When the bad drivers do the things they do they will be caught. The good ones never will. And if anyone is spewing on the internet sweetie….it is you. Did you read what you just wrote to ANOTHER total stranger?
I understand your compassion but to be angry and call names to people you dont even know is being childish and undeserving. We are only commenting on things we have seen, not what you have seen so why so angry? You need to calm down because, get this…my husband is a Truck Driver. And a very good one at that. If he causes an accident out of negligence, then that would make him a bad driver. And…if you would have kept reading instead of “spewing” your venom, you would have been able to read what else I wrote further down the page.
Thank you for your great comments. What is unique about this is that my husband was also a truck driver who is now retired. When we travel on Rt. 11 he often comments about his days driving and just shakes his head at what we see happening on the roads today. I also agree it is not just truck drivers. We have had many close calls on this road and have seen some real bad accidents.
Thank you. My husband has been driving for almost 40 years and almost ready to retire and I believe he is proud of the driving skills he has developed over the years. And he also has told me some stories that would scare a lot of people about “some” truck drivers and other drivers and the way they drive over the road and he has seen alot. We live in Caribou and he sees quite a bit from here all the way to California. No state is exempt I think when it comes to faulty drivers. Everyone makes mistakes but some just disreguard others safety because they dont think it can happen to them.
The gentleman in the pick up, pulled to the right, didn’t signal he was turning left, and didn’t look before hand. That’s how accidents happen. Not uncommon for people to pull to the side and let the trucks by. Especially in hunting/ leaf peeping season.
This is ludacris reading these comments… ive driven truck for a few years now… and i have NEVER seen a trailer truck act in a dangerous way… you know what i do see? Old people and young people pulling out in front of me and other truckers… HELLO!?! we can’t stop as fast as a car.. SO we are supposed to slam on the brakes??? So grammy jebediah or young suzy can go to her bake sale or text while driving and hit the ditch every five minutes and pull out in front of everyone … 10 times a day at least.. the stupidty and demeanor of these people that only care about THEMSELVES … i could count over 10,000 times when people pull out in front of me and then would try to say Its the truckers fault… get a grip… you people aren’t the only ones that are on the road… learn to drive.. i travel route one EVERYDAY seven days a week and its the SAME thing everyday.. NOBODY has RESPECT for ANYBODY nowadays.
How much weight you hauling? 80 or 100?
Go figure…there are actual people who live on all these roads we haul-ass on thru Northern Maine??? Ha!
So much respect shown in the early a.m. hours too :/
??
some of these comments are ridiculous. People don’t have all of the facts here. Read some of the posts. There is a chance that the pickup driver was stopped off to the side of the road, and pulled back onto the road without looking and/or didn’t use a turn signal , and because the big truck was going by, had to take evasive maneuvers. There is also the chance that the trucker made a mistake and passed when he should not have. Either way, don’t pass judgement with out the evidence. I have seen just as many regular cars and trucks drive just as crazy as some truckers. Stop stereo typing truckers. There are good drivers AND bad regardless of the type of vehicle they drive. Want to know why some truckers are bad drivers? If they get paid by the trip or by the mile, that’s incentive to take chances. Now a good truck driver will not take chances like that, but some do.Say a trucker gets paid by the mile or by the trip. If the trucks not moving, its not making the driver money. I say all truckers should be paid hourly. Should have legislation passed that you cant pay by the mile/trip. My husband is a trucker. Has been since the 70’s. He has seen the good and bad of the trucking industry. Being a truck driver is not as easy as it looks. It takes skill and knowledge to drive these big trucks. I wish that some of these people that made negative posts would ride with a trucker just once. Example:Want to know why a trucker will pass you going up a snow covered hill? Because if you are going slower than he/she is, and they don’t get up enough speed, the truck will get stuck on that hill, and could potentially be stuck there for hours or even wipe out. Its happened. Sometimes its safer for them to pass you. These trucks need more energy to get their big trucks up hills, more braking time as well. You cant just jump out in front of them and expect them to be able to stop quick. There are some bad truck drivers out there. I have encountered a few myself. Just remember, not ALL truck drivers are bad. Most truckers will do everything they can to drive safely. You have to realize that the majority of truckers are not out there to terrorize the general public. They’re trying to do their job, make money, and go home safe to their families every night. Hate truckers? Then next time you go shopping, ask yourself how that merchandise got to the store. In the mean time, I am glad that this accident did not end as bad as it could have.
very well put, my drivers are paid by the hour, they know better than to drive bad or they will be working for someone else, we have driver safety meetings, they work regular hours, they start early and get done early, we do get our quota in if possible. Iv’e driven alot myself at times when someone was out, I give these men and women alot of credit, its like driveing your vehicle with a house behind you, on the winter days when the roads are bad I don’t know how they do it, day after day, brave men and women.
Hi Mainemom…I know they aren’t all bad money grabbers and it sounds like your ideas/pay per hour, should be, in one way or another Law. And yes I can see a Trucker who needs to go up and over “Soucy’s Hill” or something like it has to pick up speed. That makes sense.
In my comment I was just saying what I see with my own two eye’s. I have driven a 18 wheeler and it’s not easy. More the reason to slow down and not be dangerous. No need to be fully loaded and flying around a corner to find a line of cars and a train crossing or something. This trucker could’ve totally been in the right but maybe just maybe if he wasn’t passing and perhaps waited for the confused or erratic truck do what it was doing…Figure out what the slow speed is about like I or I’m sure you do when on the road. You know, the Moose this time of year ect. Doesn’t the trucker have a horn? He has to by Law. He could have at least blown that to alert him. Maybe he did…I don’t know just speculating here ppl.
I’m not that old but I do remember when my father taught me how to drive the people on the road in day or night would flash their lights and honk the horn before they passed someone on a one lane road. Could be a pain in the butt for people who live on the side’s of the roads but could also save lives and injuries. Today your lucky if you get a blinker from someone passing. More so cars than the truckers in this case. And some (not just from Mass where i’m sure it originated:) think that using a blinker is a sign of weakness. lol
You have a great night too Kick. Calling her comment stupid was the same as saying she is stupid in most people’s mind. There is a small diffrence but not much when it seems like it came from a place of anger. I am sorry if I offended you because that was not my intention. Oh…the name is UHOH…not UGH…was that intentional I wonder?
Hmmn. Google his name and state.
What did you find?
