WOODLAND, Maine — Investigators with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department met Wednesday afternoon with District Attorney Todd Collins to discuss the circumstances surrounding a home invasion and burglary Saturday in which the intruder was shot.

Sheriff Jim Madore said that police are reluctant to release more information about the incident at the house on New Sweden Road, including the names of those involved, at this time.

“We want to make sure we have all of our T’s crossed and our I’s dotted before we release anything more,” he said Wednesday before the meeting. No more information was released after the meeting.

While the shooting took place Saturday, police did not release any details until this week.

According to the department, a homeowner in Woodland called 911 on Saturday to report that someone had kicked in the door to his home.

The suspect entered the home and was shot.

He was taken to Cary Medical Center in Caribou and then to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Madore said Wednesday that he believed the man was in stable condition. Police have not yet interviewed him, but continue to conduct interviews with potential witnesses, the sheriff said.

Sheriff’s Department Detective Ross McQuade is the primary investigator.

          1. Well Kevin, Actually you do.  The use of deadly force is just that.  You only shoot when you feel your life or someone’s life is in immediate danger, and if you do not shoot your life or someone else’s life  will end.

You aim to stop the threat as quickly as possible, and to be sure the target is no longer a threat to you or anyone else.  Shooting to wound does not achieve this goal, and will open you up to a lawsuit and possible prosecution by the authorities.

You can believe what you want – I will shoot to kill!

          2.  Kevin, you watch too much TV! You sound like a DA’s dream, someone totally unqualified and/or knowledgeable in the use of deadly force!

      1.  WRONG! If you draw a weapon, you MUST be prepared to kill! Otherwise the gun never leaves the drawer/holster. Shooting to wound can get you killed!

Yes, once the immediate threat has been neutralized, you are no longer justified in the use of deadly force. But until then – shoot to kill!

        1. The homeowner was fortunate that the invader didn’t get the gun away from him and kill him.  From what I heard, the homeowner was injured from the attack on him.

          1. The_truth60, yes the homeowner was injured from the attack on him.  Regardless of the rumors going around, the truth is that after the door was kicked in (deadbolt and everything still on) there was a struggle.  The evidence already proves this.  The outcome could have been much worse.

          2. That’s what I heard too.  Just need to be careful not to give away too much of the evidence!          LOL

          3.  Ah yes, the favorite argument of the anti’s – that the criminal will use the homeowner’s gun on him! Sorry, FBI statistics do not support that.

Besides, if you let the criminal get close enough to get your gun, you aren’t prepared to be protecting yourself with a firearm! Granted, there are a lot of those type out there, ones that ‘think’ they can pull the trigger. Fortunately for society as a whole, there are a lot more  of us that KNOW we can pull the trigger!

          4. The_truth60, you are correct.  The homeowner was injured from the attack.  Despite what others are saying, he was not sitting on his couch with a loaded gun waiting for the perp to enter his home.  In fact he was in bed sleeping as most people do at that time of the night, when he heard the noise from downstairs.  The homeowner was attacked by this person, and could have been killed if he had not shot him, and it would be a much worse scenario if he would have gotten the gun from him, which i’m sure he was trying to do.  Soon enough all will see the evidence the police has already colaborates all this.  They might be waiting for the scumbag to wake up to interview him, but in the end the bad guy will end up back in prision where he belongs.

  1. “According to the department, a homeowner in Woodland called 911 on
Saturday to report that someone had kicked in the door to his home.
The suspect entered the home and was shot.”

Sounds like a justified shooting to me.  If someone enters my house at night unannounced, they’re going to get shot…

      1. It would still be justified.  Someone entered the homeowner’s house by kicking in the door.  Doesn’t make any difference who did the shooting and who got shot.

  2. I hope the Police get it right. If you force your way into some else’s home, be ready for the out come. It sounds like breaking and entering. Don’t know any other details, but the home owner should have some rights here.

  3. Only in Aroostook County ……I’m SURE the NY POST would wait DAYS before getting ID info. I guess it has to come from the police or the BDN won’t report it. Such sheep. The press performs a service. ….like informing the citizens if there are home invasions in the area????. this is the same small town that has an unsolved murder of a saw mill operator still on the books. Let’s do some independent investigating BDN….not just report what the police want you to tell us. T’aint Iran you know!

    1.  You know, I am sick to death of newspapers reporting on “anonymous sources” and “unconfirmed reports” and then its all wrong. I am sure the media knows exactly who owns the house, but they are not reporting it w/o the material to back it up. If I have to wait a few days to get the complete story, who cares? This isn’t the first time police have held back on the identity of people, causes of death, etc. Cops haven’t even talked to the guy who was shot yet! Lets get his side of the story here, too!
In the meantime, the BDN allows people to have a blog on their site. Get yourself a blog, run out to that house and find out all of the details and then put that info out there yourself, Lois Lane!

      1. And you think the guy who invaded the home is going to tell the truth? It is in his best interest to lie. I think we may have to rely on the evidence.  Be patient, The true story will be told.

      2. hmmmmmmmmmm…..that’s what the trial is for…the BDN is supposed to report the news….not decide who’s right-wrong-guilty-innocent. Why am I paying them? To report the news. Not regurgitate police press releases…Jimmy Oslen

  4. kicking a door in anywhere in rural Aroostook County is like drawing a big target on yourself. no one is going to hit you with a baseball bat, they are going to do it right and shoot you

  5. Mark L Crouch JRDate of Birth: 11/17/1975 Residence: Woodland ME, 04736 Address last verified on: 08/02/2012 SORA #: 2551  Registrant Type: LIFETIME REGISTRANT Convictions Statute: 17-A MRSA (253)(1)(A) Offense: Gross sexual assaultStatutory Description: Engage in a sexual act as a result of compulsion.Case #: CARSCCR200300019Court: Caribou Superior Court

    1. Now people seem to be saying that the story of them being friends and roommates might have been started by Mark Crouch’s girlfriend.   Some of the story is true and other thing have been added or change to make Mark look good.

EXAMPLE:  Being friends & roommates……  Yes, they did know each other but, they were far from being friends and roommates.

EXAMPLE: Mark  called and said he was coming over…. Yes, Mark called but, it was to start or to continue a fight.

      1. It is amazing what someone might say to protect their boyfriend and go against their own family.  Protect someone from going back  to prison and try to throw another under the bus because they protected themselves.  Let me ask any of you out there. If and that’s a big IF you invited someone to your home IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. And let’s suppose you changed your mind for what ever reason. Does that give the other person permission to kick in the door and attack you?  Friends or not, There is no excuse for what Crouch did.   He is a dangerous man. The people who were with him should be charged as accessories as far as I’m concerned.  They are trying to protect him and themselves in the process. Wonder how they sleep at night?

    2. Thanks for the info. That confirms what I found yesterday with a brief internet search.

      Not exactly “Mr Innocence” here.

  6. It is certainly possible that the alleged burglar did not kick down the door and it was only the homeowner trying to make trouble that caused him to call the police. If so, then no force at all was justified. That’s why we need some gun control laws – to keep people from making their own life-and-death decisions on the spur of the moment.

    1. The door was kicked in.  That has been all over the news and in the papers. You give up your guns if you want. Hopefully you never have to protect your home and family from invasion and attack.  This is the United States.  Take our guns and let the criminal have theirs because they will. I hope that doesn’t happen in my lifetime.  It is my constitutional right to own a gun and to protect myself.

    2.  When it is a life or death decision it happens in a split second.  The person had the option to leave or not show up in the first place.  The homeowner has the right.  The invader does not.  It’s already been tried the other way and too many crime victims  died as a result.  This way works.  Perhaps your opinion would change if you were a victim instead of an onlooker.

      1. Thank you REBECCAS_KEY.  I wonder if gun control activist would feel different if someone kicked in their door, attacked them or their child. What if they watched helplessly as their daughter were raped, tortured, and murdered and they had nothing that could effectively stop the crimes committed against them.  I think their opinion might change.  If there is one thing I’ve learned in my mature years is this.  Don’t  judge a man unless you have walked a mile in his shoes.  We all can voice what we think we might do in any given situation, but the truth is; until we are put into a situation, we aren’t sure how we might act.  I agree that most of us would do as Mr. Ketch. Seriously, who wouldn’t try to protect themselves or better yet, their loved ones.  I wouldn’t want to get close enough to the intruder to try and stop them with a baseball bat or a butter knife. LOL  If that’s how you choose to defend your family (gun activist) go right ahead. That’s your choice. I will reach for my gun.
