A little rain never hurt anybody — least of all the hardy concertgoers at Friday night’s Waterfront Concert, which featured a triple bill of Journey, Pat Benatar and Loverboy. Temperatures in the upper 40s and a steady drizzle did not deter the near-sellout crowd, who donned multicolored ponchos and raincoats and braved the weather to rock for more than three hours.

Journey took to the stage at 9:15 on the nose, and played a long set that blended mega-hits like “Any Way You Want It” and “Faithfully” with newer songs from the past two albums, recorded with the band’s third lead singer, Arnel Pineda. He has been with the band since 2008, and he’s almost uncanny in his ability to translate classic Journey songs. Pineda is a ball of energy, darting all over the stage and mugging with lead guitarist and Journey founder Neal Schon, and against their big, bright stage show, they delighted the more than 10,000 people in attendance.

“I grew up on Journey,” said 40-year-old Cheryl Travis of Westbrook. “These are all the songs I loved in high school. I know every word.”

Pat Benatar played in the middle of the bill, and her lean, mean, four-piece band with her husband, Neil “Spider” Giraldo, played a quick and dirty set that showcased her big back catalog of hits, including “We Belong To The Night,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Love Is a Battlefield” and “Heartbreaker.” Benatar and Giraldo are one of rock’s most enduring partnerships — the pair have played together for 34 years and have been married for 30, with 12 albums and two daughters.

Benatar, as well as all the other performers Friday, was bundled up — she wore a long black coat to protect her from the elements. But, as she said from the stage, rain is no big deal to her.

“You guys are so good to be here, and we’re so glad you’re here,” she said. “You guys have ponchos! We’re not afraid of a little rain, are we?”

Canadian band Loverboy opened the night, blasting their signature hits including “Working For The Weekend” and “Turn Me Loose.”

There’s one more concert set for the waterfront this year — Saturday, Sept. 29, will feature the Christian rock festival SoulQuest, featuring Switchfoot, Needtobreathe, the Wrecking and many others. This season featured more than 15 concerts that played to tens of thousands of fans. For more information and to stay updated on concerts set for 2013, visit waterfrontconcerts.com.

  1. Enjoying the concert a mile and a half away in my living room- may not feel that good about it at 430 tomorrow morning when I have to get up for work on 5 hours sleep.

    1. A few concerts a summer don’t bother me.  But you starting your darn car so early every morning, why,  I just can’t get back to sleep after that.  Oh how I miss the old silent city….

      1. Those people who insist on getting up before dawn and banging around, slamming their car doors, letting their cars warm up right outside your window… you can hear it all the way down the block! They’re a menace! There should be a law against disturbing sleeping people at 4:30 am! Who do they think they are!!!

        1.  chop chop, if you have a complaint with your neighbor, you go over and express it to them for a mutual resolution. The City has had complaints they choose to ignore because we have a class war going on. Big difference.

          1. This has nothing to do with your “class warfare”.  It is about greater good.  10-15 thousand people spent good money throughout Bangor for this one show.  Hotels,  stores, restaurants,  bars,  and all the folks that work at,  or own these business’ make more money during these shows.  Even if there are 5000 of you complaining,  many more are celebrating.  Take one for the team,  would ya….

          2. There is no convincing letsbehonest and pushtheredbutton- they are trying to shut down the city. It’s a feeble attempt however.

          1.  Ear plugs don’t work, as sound also travels through the mastoid process and also vibrates through the tissues of the body. Where do you live, I’ll demonstrate this for you if you have trouble learning!

          2. I live in a town where tractor trailers are started at 3:30 AM… Just parts of where you live. If you do not like it… this is America!!!! MOVE!!!!!!

          3. This music is NEW.  People didn’t buy their house where they bought it to be pummeled by radio country.  People do tend to complain when something new comes in to hurt their quality of life.

        2. We think we are the people that keep your hospital emergency rooms open, run your airports, keep water and power flowing to your home 24/7, man your police and fire stations. plow your roads in the winter…and so on. And yea, we pay the bulk of the taxes.

So I hope you understand if you come to the ER today and I struggle calculating the dosage on your medication because I’m running on 5 hours sleep.

    2.  Mayorofmainstreet, I meant to reply to you, but it got inserted above. Sorry. It may be time for some of you who are closer to the noise to sue because of the unaddressed noise issues at your home. Apparently, the City is not getting the message that the concerts do not belong next to residential neighborhoods.

      1.  My house was once again vibrating to the beat of the latest concert. Anyone interested in getting together to file a class action suit against the concert promoter and against the city council ? Any attorneys interested in representing us?? Enough is enough!

          1. Terence, you reason like a selfish child. Do you think it’s possible to come to a solution that accomodates those who want the concerts and those who don’t want the booming base?? I do think a compromise is possible, but will likely be reached only if  both sides RESPECT each others points of view.

          2. Healing- I respect your mature attitude, but this is not about being me being selfish. This is about letting a booming city be what it wants to be. Loud and Vibrant with life. It is a success for a reason. This is about a few who think that this city should explain itself and shutdown because it holds outdoor events 15-20 times a year. This is about people who have nothing better to do but to complain about where they live. This is about a few being selfish in trying to shut a city down so it’s ‘quiet’. The worse thing you can do to make me believe those types are not indeed selfish. If I moved to Las Vegas, and all the excitement there was too loud and I had to get up and I couldn’t sleep- I would do one of two options: #1 move to where it’s quiet. #2 Get used to it and accept that you live in a city that is ‘happening’ with events and life. Never in a million years would I think of trying to shut the city down so I could sleep because I (myself, me me me) chose to live there. Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? Supporting is brought to you by a network of game changers and game supporters who are working and supporting towards making Bangor a more exciting destination. If you give in to these shallow complaints (15-20 times a year? Really?), you let solutions like CasinosNo!, ArenaNo!, NoiseNo! win over moving forward. Can you imagine if 15 people destroyed a city of tens of thousands? It became quiet so a few could have it their way. Doesn’t it sound a little out of the reality zone? Now, the stage is being moved to face downtown, so I think they have made a valuable offer to make it the best venue they can without leaving the area. There are only two options: Stay or leave for either a half a million people (five years of events at current venue) and national promotional efforts making Bangor better or the same options for the very few who seem to want to only complain (though their exclusive right).

        1. Can you get together with your neighbors?  It should be easy enough to stop that, with complaints.  I would assume you’d succeed in time.

      2. Also, to that lawsuit, add the Bangor PD, FD for loud sirens all day, Bangor International Airport for flights coming in, The Bangor State Fair, KahBang, American Folk Festival, all the pubs and loud bars and any other community event that is held. Better yet, let’s just shut down the city. Good luck with that lawsuit. Did you know there are hundreds of other cities in the nation as well? How did they become cities? They ignore comments such as yours.

      3. They are holding them in Portland, also Downtown Boston and many other cities all over the country.  Small as it is, Bangor is a CITY.  There are all types of noises in a City.  If they are too much to handle, move…  My parents are 5 mins from the WFC and are elderly.   They are happy that things are happening in the city.  My dad told me today that he wishes he was able to go.  I was close to center stage and I didn’t find it loud at all : )

        1. Didn’t Loverboy sound great after all these years? They all did. Arnel stole the show for Journey. Excellent.

        2. One big show in Portland.  One.  Smaller daytime festivals, not particularly loud.  Just the Mumford show in Portland that’s on the same basic level, soundwise.

          1. There will be more…  Trust me.  Portland doesn’t like to be out-shined by it little brother city, Bangor.  There are room for both!  Bangor HAS to have something to do to become a more viable city, period.  Something to do puts Bangor back on the map which will lead to more prosperity.  Something the area desperately needs.  Stop being a party pooper and go to a show!  You just might like it!

      4. The rock concert near residential neighborhood experiment takes place in other cities and it usually lasts 3 or 4 years.  Residents usually get fed up.  Pounding people who choose to live in the most urbanized part of northern and eastern Maine with radio country is not the way to go.  People in the country like country.  People in the city do not like country.  Waterfront Concerts should be in the middle of nowhere, where it doesn’t bother anybody.

It seems like Bangor likes money no matter what.  And I love how someone listed the McDonalds as the positive local economic benefits.

Things just seem to be really really bad in Bangor.  Kahbang and WPC are bright spots.

    3. Glad you were able to enjoy the concert!!  I attended it and thought it was a great show as well!!   I’m not from Bangor but I spent a couple hundred on tickets, Spent money having dinner at a Bangor resturant and paid additional fee to park.  There were approx 10,000 people at this concert not all spent as much as I did and I’m sure others spent more.  All this going towards growing a better economy for the citizens of Bangor.  By the way this concert was wotrth every penny I spent ;ast night and I would gladly return.  Glad you got to enjoy the show and see your city grow.

      1. Sorry rumor already has it that the citizens don’t benifit one bit from these concerts, only the businesses. but all the citizens have to pay for it, thus corporate welfare.

        1. I imagine you’ll be voting Democratic in November… because you just admitted Trickle Down Economics isn’t working the way the GOP would like you to think it is… is it???

          1. I am a Teaparty Democratic and see no Democratics running. only Liberals. Ron Paul was screwed by the RNC, all he wanted was a platform to speak for 15 minutes and your proud of that? hahaha.. I’m voting against Obama and other liberals. I like Summers and Raye I hope they win.

        2. I wonder what Bangor’s mill rate would be without the new buildings popping up all over Bangor as a result of events, concerts, things to do in Bangor?

        3. No citizens benefit? Aren’t they plenty of citizens that work for the businesses that you say benefit? I bet there were tips galore at the restaurants where people ate. My table tipped 40 bucks, plus the bill. I bet that citizen was glad we went to the concert.

          1.  I believe in supporting local business. It’s the corporate welfare that these businesses recieve from the city that bothers me. 100 millon dollars spent downtown to attract people to the saloons and feed houses. We need a local sales tax to get our money back.

          2. Do you have a link to “100 million dollars spent downtown to attract people to the saloons and feed houses”?  I’m not saying you’re wrong.  I would be awfully interested how they could spend that much money and get so little in return.  You would think that if Bangor is spending 100 Million Dollars, they’d end up with some music venues with stages, lights, sound.  And they have none, but for some reason they want 2 new venues that are much bigger than needed,  and annoy the residents, who did not expect loud music when they bought their houses.

        4. I went, and I enjoyed it. I saw signs for non-profits for parking. McDonalds was packed after. Local vendors at the concert itself were hopping. How many employees needed to put on a show? Not sure, I have seen ten or fifteen just putting out chairs. I am willing to bet a lot of hotels and restaurants saw an increase in business. Just having live music is a benefit to me. Corporate welfare is the stock market, these concerts are great for the local economy!

        5. Rumor? You mean urban legend don’t you? Of course the citizens benefit from having a more vibrant community. You mean the town of Benton doesn’t benefit, right?

    1. Ah there you are. so early in the comments..

I heard the city council wants to build a big unbrella the size of a football field  for the concerts.. Was the mayor handing out towels tonight? for His boss Alex Gray.

      1.  Live Nation runs the show. They do have a lot of gophers that make them a lot of money though. Only one more show? Man, how sad.

  2. Heard it out by Interstate and Union too. They really don’t care.
The right to the quiet enjoyment of one’s home is the law I believe.

Excerpt from wiki on nuisance:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuisance
Legally, the term nuisance is traditionally used in three ways:

    1. to describe an activity or condition that is harmful or annoying to
others (e.g., indecent conduct, a rubbish heap or a smoking chimney)2. to describe the harm caused by the before-mentioned activity or condition (e.g., loud noises or objectionable odors)3. to describe a legal liability that arises from the combination of the two.
However, the “interference” was not the result of a neighbor stealing
land or trespassing on the land. Instead, it arose from activities
taking place on another person’s land that affected the enjoyment of
    that land.

          1.  I wish I did. I feel a lot of empathy for the people who live in the Main St. to Webster Ave neighborhood. They are on the inside of an acoustic shell because people didn’t pay attention (or didn’t care) when they selected the location of WFC.

          2. OK so the city demands that the WFC series moves from the waterfront to the airport….now what do you call it? The AC series? No you wouldn’t call it anything because Live Nation would pull up stakes and move to southern Maine taking ALL of the economic benefit with it. Would that make you happy?

          3. jd2008jd- there are just a few people on here that really have no impact. Thanks for your support along with the other 80,000.

          4. Now you know the types of people that forced many of us to leave JD.  They were the ones who would only be happy if they were suing the city and tumbleweeds were blowing down Main St.  Sad that some still remain….

          5.  You are making assumptions. I love a vibrant city, otherwise I WOULD HAVE LEFT. This City has driven out my three highly-successful adult children who are and always were achievers. Their input would’ve helped build something of value here. Bangor is not Ft. Myers Beach, party central, nor is it anything like Old Port in Portland. That is a laughable comparison!  You have the wrong impression completely. How about you allow other people to do well in business in Bangor instead of just your friends and associates? That might make a real vibrant community instead of public drinking, super expensive decorations, class warfare, and rattling people’s windows, calling that economic development.

          6. My friends and associates had to leave Bangor in the 80’s.  It was because we couldn’t get good enough work, nor was there any nightlife unless you count, the Show Ring and Benjamin’s as quality nightlife. I don’t.  I am sure your kids felt as helpless as did I and my other friends.  Now in our late 40’s we feel great about the changes that Bangor has made and continues to make.  I am just sorry it’s 30 years after it SHOULD have been done.

Let me ask you, why did your kids leave?  If it is a similar reason to mine, you should embrace the brighter future of the city.  I know our parents voted for the arena and don’t mind listening to the concerts.  They LOVE the fact that it reminds them of when Bangor was a happening place in the 50’s and 60’s.

“Changes aren’t permanent, but CHANGE is…”    – Peart

          7. Hey jd, I’ve had an idea after sleeping on this, it could be the answer to my fiscal problems caused by all your big-cheese friends. I can go buy some property down there, and then sue!  Terence and I can be neighbors! And I can walk down the road and smoke cigars with my peeps. It’s all good!

    1. letsbehonest- if you move to Las Vegas, Alantic City, New York City, I wonder if they would bow to you and shut their city down. Come on, give it up.

      1.  Did I ask anyone to bow? Give it a rest yourself Terence. Calling me a drama queen amongst other things. You don’t know me and you have absolutely no idea how much I’ve contributed to this City. You make wild assumptions and you are wrong. I would like someone to admit that there is a problem and deal with it in a rational mature way.

        1. Yes you have lived here for 40 years or something like that. I have lived here for 37 years and I will catch up to you in three years. If you know what I mean. :)

    2. lets- that’s funny. My internet connection is not working right tonight. I just went to the link and I got this:

      Excerpt from wiki on nuisance:

Nuisance- (see letsbehonestforonce). 1. Constant complaining.

      .
      .

(ha ha. just kidding. You know I love ya letsbehonest)

    1. I live 2+ miles from the concert area and can still easily hear them with windows closed, so please don’t try to make it sound like that’s all anyone has to do.  You know better.

      1. You should consider shoving some insulation into those 2×3 walls of yours.  Maybe some skirting around the base,  where the wheels are. Or hook up and pull it away from the noisy city….

          1. Maybe people would want to take care of their properties if they felt like Bangor was their home. No one has been listening to the Bangor residents who built the place and it shows. That balance will be restored when the house of cards falls down.

          2. Look,  I feel for you,  I really do.  But Waterfront Concerts bring revenue to Bangor and keep taxes flat.  And they last only a few months a year.  The effort you’ve made to try and pull the key-card from this house should be dealt to the real cause for the loss of class;  Methadone clinics.  Drawing money as opposed to dealing it.

          1. Sorry last, got you mixed up. There have been a few who are complaining that don’t even live near enough. Glad that it doesn’t bother you. It’s not a lot of dates on the calendar as far as the year goes. You know? A few seem bothered by it.

    2.  The windows rattle! I am far enough away that I can still ignore it, but I can’t even begin to imagine the hell someone in that neighborhood has to endure getting children to go to sleep on those nights. It’s plain wrong to be ignored by the City about this.

      1. I don’t think it’s about the events as much as it is about the person. If that makes sense. Thanks for joining us in supporting Bangor as a destination.

  3. Can you say amphitheater?  Will make a difference. Benatar is Benatar,  awesome! BUT, Journey without Steve Perry, is just Journey without out Steve Perry?

          1. Well I would reply that all 3 of these acts should had remained in  the tight levi,  long mullet,  Camaro drivin’  ’80s,  when everything other then SRV and GNX’S sucked,  and maybe gain a half stroke.

          2. You noticed that too?  Apparently bands that stopped having hits 25 years ago are still relevant to people in Bangor.  And radio country.

  4. 30 years ago I would have crawled through broken glass to see Pat Benatar.  Now, I don’t think I’d cross the road, much less sit out in the cold rain.  Guess I’m getting old.

  5. Like clockwork after every
    concert some gloomy, grumpy,
Grinch adds his or her two
cents about all that noise, noise, noise, noise!
    While every Happy Person
    down on Main Street
liked the Waterfront Concerts a lot
the Grinch, who lived just North (east, south, west…) of Main Street,
    Did not.
    The Grinch hated Waterfront Concerts!
    The whole Waterfront Concerts season!
Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.

Could it be… he’s just unhappy?

    Then those Happy People would
do something he liked least of all!
    They’d stand hand-in-hand.
And the Happy People would start singing!
They’d sing! And they’d sing! AND they’d SING! SING! SING! SING!

So 15 times this year that
Old Grinch is grumbling about Happy People.
The other 350 days of the
year he’s most likely still unhappy.
That old Grinch is simply a
    Grinch.

    1. Like clockwork durning every concert people have their homes invaded by loud music that they don’t care to listen to, yet can’t turn it off.. How would you like being harrassed 15/20 times a year, you would be calling the police.

      1. They don’t get it. It’s the entitlement generation, “it’s all about them”. It will come to an end. The wheels are already in motion. Kind of like the wheels in the sky……

        1. Corporate entitlement you mean.. It’s all about compainies using politicans to do their dirty work and to fund projects they themselves wouldn’t fund. Do you remember when the mayor took office and said we are going to promote the water front and he had for sales signs put up every. They had big signs of how the lots were to be split up.. Then all of a sudden that plan is gone and we are building a new arena because the chamber said if they didn’t they would start the process, Sell waterfront concerts a parcel of land to build their own stage.. You know why that won’t happen? Because the they (Alex)  would be responsibile for the noise and could be sued. So the city is taking that problem away from them

          1. What? You have no idea what you are talking about push. There were no “for sale” signs place anywhere on the waterfront.

The Fish House Grill wants to come to Bangor and set up shop on the waterfront – 9/2011
Fish House in exclusive talks to create Bangor waterfront restaurant http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2011/09/26/news/bangor/fish-house-in-exclusive-talks-to-create-bangor-waterfront-restaurant/

But alas 9/2012 Restaurant sale causes Fish House to delay expansion into Bangor http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2012/09/03/business/restaurant-sale-causes-fish-house-to-delay-expansion-into-bangor/

The city has been talking about building the arena for 20+ years. The Bangor Chamber supported the building but NEVER said “if they didn’t they would start the process”.

Push you really don’t care about facts do you.

          2. jd I said there “WAS” for sale signs. When Cary took office they put 12foot X4 foot  signs up on the waterfront along with realistate signs everywhere.. then like magic the vanished.  and yes the chamber did.

          3. For someone that doesn’t live near the waterfront you sure seem to know all that is going on down there. I am on the waterfront almost daily around lunch time. The signs didn’t exist and the chamber NEVER said they would build it. Never.

          4.  I saw the signs and asked somebody in economic development why signs were down there, since I thought the open green space was a public park and was told that’s actually property for sale. In fact, I believe the plan then was to build condos with balconies to look out onto the beautiful landscaped areas, lawns, walkways and street lighting that Bangor had paid for.

          5. Push I’m done….you make statements not based in fact. The Bangor CofC never said they were taking over if the city didn’t build a new arena.

The article you posted says this….

“While we’re proud of our role in securing approval for a new event and convention center, we want the community to understand that the Chamber has its sights set on more than just a new arena.”

            Key Word – ROLE

That is exactly what they had….a ROLE…they didn’t take it over and they didn’t say they were going to take it over.

Did you attend any of the meetings leading up to the arena vote? Did you go to the CofC Early Bird breakfast where the role of the CofC was discussed?

No you say….I didn’t think so.

          6. push you made a wild claim that the CofC “would start the process” of the new arena if the “they didn’t” and have been trying to prove it ever since. So tell me push since the city owns Bass Park and both the auditorium and civic center how does a private organization take over that piece of property?

Do the merchants that belong to the CofC storm Bass Park and seize it?

Do they hire professional demonstrators and have them do a “sit in”?

How exactly would the CofC “start the process” if the city didn’t?

          7. Push I’m done….of course they marketed the waterfront….you cannot promote and sell something if you don’t have anything to show….but where are the SIGNS on the waterfront????

      2. Do you feel the same way about the Bangor State Fair? That’s continuous noise for 10 days in the middle of summer after all.

Or how about the American Folk Festival? That’s continuous noise for 3 days in late summer.

Or maybe the C-17s, F-16s, British Tornado’s, KC135s, KC10s, etc…that make such a racket at all hours of the day or night.

What would you suggest push….you always seem to complain but I never see much in the way of solutions from you.

          1. Bring it on….most of the acts I would enjoy very much. It would also cost me less money since I wouldn’t have to purchase tickets or spend money for food, etc…

But seriously do you feel the same way about any of the above questions or is it just the WFC series?

          2. If someone wants to lease a peice of property from me to do business, I will let them construct the buildings themselves and when the lease runs out the improvements belong to me… Every time I turn around the city is spending money for these people. 1.25 per head should be put up to 5 dollars a head. I dislike corporate welfare as much as I hate people abusing regular welfare.. I understand politics and how the money flows around back into the policy makers pockets. I’m just tired of it and think people should stand up to it and just say NO!!!

          3. Nice non-responsive answer push….

            Here are the questions again:

Do you feel the same way about the Bangor State Fair? That’s continuous noise for 10 days in the middle of summer after all.

Or how about the American Folk Festival? That’s continuous noise for 3 days in late summer.

Or maybe the C-17s, F-16s, British Tornado’s, KC135s, KC10s, etc…that make such a racket at all hours of the day or night.

          4. Don’t do the state fair, I don’t hear them, Folk Festival I like, not so much this year due to most acts were same genre, and I like the fighter jets. watching them do a fly over thanking the refueling unit is the coolest. I’m glad they don’t do this for 4 hrs 15 times a year.. What really will make me happy is when the city stops using taxpayer revenue to fund the pet projects for the Chambers members..

jd2008jd what do you think about the city refusing to fund a dog park for the stakeholders , yet are willing to spend 100 millon on the entertainment corrodor. and now will charge for garbage bags.. Who are they looking out for?

          5. Fact of the matter is Hollywood Casino, the Cross Insurance Arena, the WFC series ALL (or will) return money to the city in one form or another (taxes, TIF, ticker sales, rental, etc…) and while I support a dog park (and funds are being raised for one out in Essex Woods) it returns very little compared to, the “entertainment corridor” as you call it.

          6. Oh yeah, that damn ice cream truck gonna get it. Another lawsuit there. No more ice cream trucks, concerts, sirens, air traffic, fairs, events. And those squirrels outside my window! Sue the squirrels!! Sue the squirrels! lol. Having fun today!!

          7. A squirrel walks into a bar and asks for 12 drinks. The bartender, shocked at how many he wants, could only scream ‘NUTS!” The squrriel replies “no thanks, I’m full”…

        1. Place the concerts near the Airport. simple as that.. I wish the city would concider the citizens rights, now and then   instead of the Saloons  and the slots parlor 100% of the time.

          1. So it’s more about NIMBY then anything else?

If you find it offensive don’t you think the people that live off of Union and Hammond would find it offensive too?

But what about the other events I mention? No problems with the State Fair or AFF?

          2. I don’t live in the downtown area yet I would like to defend the rights of those who do.. What do you and the council call them?? STAKEHOLDERS, meaning having and interest in.. or if they are complaining you can change the name to UNITS. when actually they are CITIZENS and taxpaying home owners. What is your favorite term to call the HUMANS that reside in Bangor?

          3. You don’t even live near the waterfront and all these comments? Fraud! Its great that you speak for all these so called disturbed citizens because they don’t post here.. cause if you live on the waterfront you can’t have the internet. (giggle)

          4. I can hear it from my home.. You called the Human Units, Citizens,, WOW!!! and after all them things I said about you.. LOL.

          5. You are a citizen as well Push. Wish for once you would join the rest of us sometime. How about a drink or maybe a show sometime? You do like that there are things to do when you leave the rez, right?

          6. Hey Terence, when the next show?  What is there to do now in Bangor?  What’s good in October, November?  What’s good coming up?

Rockland has more than Bangor coming up, and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper to put together a 200-1000 capacity venue than an arena or a stadium.

Bangor should make Waterfront / Live Nation bring in 5-10 acts a month before and after waterfront shows at this new 200-1000 capacity venue.  If they’re going to build a nice venue for Waterfront Concerts.

          7. The city has hired a company to manage and attract acts to the new arena. The problem you mention is due to a city without concert management experience attempting to run the 1950s arena and failing. Want to step back in time to the 1950s Bangor? Just step into the Bangor Auditorium and you will be transported back 60+ years.

          8. I don’t believe I have called the citizens of Bangor anything but the citizens of Bangor push.

And one citizen is no more or less important then another citizen.

Now PLEASE ANSWER the question that were asked of you push. Just so you remember them….

          9. necessary?  really?  How many were from Bangor?  Apparently there is a McDonalds that benefits from these concerts, and probably a convenience store or 2.

          10. Oh don’t forget Dunkin Donuts and the drug dealers…I am sure they benefited to. We all know and I am sure pushtheredbutton and letsbehonestforonce would insist that a concert and  drug dealers go together like peanut butter and chocolate.

          11. We won’t be able to hear with all those planes coming in. Those loud planes. I’m sick of them coming in over my house at all hours. I’m filing a lawsuit! lol… just having fun.

          12.  I knew I should’ve gone to law school. Heh, apples and oranges T, apples and oranges. Planes have to land at airports. Loud rock concerts don’t have to be on the river next to a residential neighborhood.

          13. You do understand that there is a “residential neighborhood” that borders the airport don’t you lets?

          14.  Airports are necessary and usually can’t relocate, especially when it’s also a base. You can acclimate to jet noise, by the way. I have after 42 years.

          15. Who said anything about moving an airport lets??????

push suggested moving the concerts to the area around the airport. You do understand that there are “residential” areas bordering the airport don’t you?

          16. Yes I do. I understand acoustics as well.
The concerts could easily be pointed away from the residential area. Since the area is on the flat, the sound would not be magnified as it is now, but would be dissipated into the open air. There is also a large area for parking vehicles out there. Frankly, I doubt concert-goers care if the river is next to them when they are focusing on the music and the stage.

          17. I would not point a sound stage with loud rock music towards any residential areas. I don’t separate people out like you and Terence who think some are better than others in this city.

          18. Excuse me lets but where have I EVER said some people are better than others? Now you just trying to pick a fight.

    2. That was awesome. Good job RJ.  All I can say is- OUCH! You got ’em squirming and firing up their e-peen with this one.  Thank you. You made my day.

  6. Okay Red, I can’t let your bilge water statement pass for fear of allowing your lies to go forward.  I’d like to see the offical attendence at this show as I believe it was closer to 15,000 as the crowd was HUGE.  YOU, unless you are buying a ticket, ARE NOT paying for anything!  The four of us stayed at the casino, went to dinner, breakfast and spent $ for gas, beverages and spent $ at the casino.

All in all, a great concert, a great evening out, a very nice hotel, food and just an all around POSITIVE experience.  My hat’s off to Alex Gray and WFC for bringing in such quality entertainment!  I spoke to many people from New Brunswick, NH, MA etc, so there IS econmic impact for Greater Bangor!

Finally, Red how much has your taxes(%) gone up (be specific) for the arena, and WFC?  That’s right, it hasn’t…

    1. 15,000+ Steve. Thank you for coming to town and spending some money. You are a true supporter, and I hope you had a great time. It was an incredible night wasn’t it? The rain surely made it epic.

      1.  I hope you will be supplying the cost/benefit ratio from the City’s standpoint soon. I’d be interested in how much return for investment our taxpayers are getting.

        1. Last night $1.25/ticket estimated 10,000 paid attendance = $12,500.00 or $3,125.00/hour based on a 4 hour concert.

      2. It was tremendous T!  We had a blast!  The rain was a drag but certainly far from a big deal!  Hope they add a covered part like, Comcast Center someday.  Speaking of that venue, I believe its capacity is aprox 15,000.  I’ve been there dozens of times and I’m going to take a guess and say WFC drew at least 13,000 to 15,000 last night.   Awesome job!  And to those that thought Bangor couldn’t draw a big crowd….  I told you so!!!  Is 5800 fixed seats in the new arena going to be enough?  Time will tell.

        1. Is there anything smaller in Bangor?  Here’s what’s going on in Bangor according to Pollstar.

          http://www.pollstar.com/resultsCity.aspx?ID=7589&SearchBy=bangor%2c+me

          Nothing at all!!!

Bangor does not need a million dollar arena or  600K ampitheatre.  It needs something good to do all the time.  Like cities have.  There are literally NO concerts on Pollstar for Bangor.

Locally – Rockport, Ellsworth, Charleston, Unity, Belfast, Rockport, Orono have live music on the Pollstar schedule.Rockland has 2 venues with at least 1 Pollstar – the Strand Theatre, and Time Out Pub.Portland has, before the end of October, 25 different live music events listed on Pollstar. (Remember, Bangor has 0) These 25 events are at 11 different venues. Asylum, One Longfellow Square, State Theatre, Studio 250, Space Gallery, Geno’s, Slainte, Flask Lounge, Port City Music Hall, Empire Dine and Dance, Blue. None of those shows are at an expensive stadium or arena (although they occasionally have something at CCCC, and it’s usually better than what Bangor gets). If Portland has 11 venues (at least) with Pollstar acts, why does Bangor have none? Why are there 25 shows to choose from in Portland, and 0 in Bangor? Shouldn’t this problem be one to solve, not the lack of a massive building?Bangor seems to want to treat it’s residents awfully. Don’t like the noise, leave? Hate radio country? Too bad. Like good music, pay $70 and stand or hit in a huge crowd, sometimes when it’s raining. But no venues for you, where you can get a good concert experience, inside, with less than 1,000 people.

          1. The problem you identify has been ongoing for years and is a direct result of an existing arena managed by the city and one that was designed in the 1950s and not maintained or upgraded on a regular basis.

          2. What venue’s does Bangor have that are even CLOSE to the Merrill Aud, State Theater, Port City Music hall etc?  A new theater in downtown Bangor should be on the radar as the next project…

          3. Dude, you are confused. The season just ended in Bangor. That’s why we have built a new arena. The shows in the Bangor area continue (Collins Center, Gracie, PTC, BA, Hollywood Casino) but will increase next season because of the Cross Center. Bangor has been the concert capital of Maine for the last three seasons. , real concerts. Sorry. Bangor has been kicking Portland’s (censored) with large scale AFF, KahBang, WFC. You can’t be serious.

    1. We all know who you support in the election because you insert the same message in all sorts of articles about all kinds of issues that have nothing to do with politics. Just more of the same…

  7. The 80’s are back! Unfortunately, that does not include the good economic times. Hopefully, it does not include the big hair and big shoulders from that era.

  8. Is the city council concerned with the UNITS (oh I mean STAKEHOLDERS)(OH WAIT HUMANS) (ah PEOPLE) (I’ll get it TAXPAYER) (one more try CITIZENS) who own houses near the concerts?

  9. What are the grinches going to bark about now that the season is over? I feel they will become bored and lonely. Starting a fund to save these adorable little creatures!

  10. I drove down Main  St last night and from there the sound was so loud that I’d have had to wear ear plugs.  I thought of that and wondered why people who live nearby don’t set out chairs on their porches to rent to people who want to listen.  Make a few bucks off all the folks standing around.

    1. Must have missed all the people in the old Quirk parking lot, etc….Normally several hundred hanging around outside enjoying the music too.

  11. Request to BDN  Journey was awesome!!  But could you add a few photos from Pat Benatar and Loverboy Because they were great also!!

  12. many complain about the noise. I complain about this generic review that gave no feel for the concert itself. And yes, we are from out of town and dropped money into your local economy. I sympathize about the noise complaints, but, if you have to leave for work at 4:30 in the morn, you are just as likely disturbing the sleep of others.
