ROCKLAND, Maine — An 18-year-old Rockland woman suffered broken bones after being struck Friday evening by a pickup truck.

Haley Robinson suffered two breaks in her femur and broke a bone in her wrist, according to an accident report filed by the Rockland Police Department.

Robinson was walking west to east in a crosswalk on Camden Street by the Circle K convenience store near Front Street. At the same time, a Toyota Tacoma driven by Steven Klasson, 47, of China was heading north, according to the police report.

There was heavy rain at the time of the crash, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Klasson said he saw the young woman when she was only 10 feet away and could not avoid striking her.

Robinson tumbled 30 feet or so and skidded on the ground, according to the police report.

Witnesses reported that the motorist was not speeding, according to the report.

No charges will be filed.

  1. “There was heavy rain at the time of the crash, which occurred shortly

    Why not?

Maine law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and to drive at a speed that is appropriate for the weather and road conditions.  Darkness, heavy rain and the presence of crosswalks means that drivers need to slow down significantly.

Either this driver was driving too fast or he has a serious vision impairment.

  2. “Witnesses reported that the motorist was not speeding, according to the report.”

Lots of people walking around Rockland with radar guns on their hips these days?

  3. Rather than spending money on fancy brick sidewalks, perhaps the City should be installing crosswalk lights that flash when activated so drivers will be alerted when it’s dark or the weather is bad.

    1. How about just simply PAINTING those crosswalks as a start. If you didn’t drive through there frequently you would never know that there was one there. Especially at night in the rain.
I feel very bad for this young woman, as well as the driver of the truck. She’s lucky to be alive.
I would caution ALL that just assuming because you are in a cross-walk means the vehicles will stop is not a good thing. You should never assume, and be sure the traffic will stop before you cross. And when it’s dark and rainy, even more so.

      1. That crosswalk is painted, it’s poorly lit and on a curve though.  No excuses made for anyone involved.  I do agree that pedestrians need to make sure that drivers see them before they step into a crosswalk; I have had more people just walk in front of me without even looking to make sure I see them than I care to think about!

  4. This is the second person in Rockland in the last month to be hit on a crosswalk and the police are not pressing charges!! Hopefully this persons car insurance will cover her hospital bills and recovery time!

  5. Just because there is a crosswalk doesn’t mean you don’t have to stop and look both ways before crossing…You can’t stop a 2000 pound car on a dime…I see it ALL the time…People just walk out into the road without even looking…Remember what your mom taught you…Stop and look BOTH ways before crossing…

    1. Similarly, just because someone is not in a crosswalk does not give you  the right o run them over. It’s a two way street! Pun intended.

  6. Once again, BDN! It was a PICK-UP truck. Reading the head line you get the impression that she got hit by a big rig. There is a difference.

  7. Does anyone care about pedestrians in Rockland? There is not even a slow zone near the college, and a lot of students walk. Someone was nearly hit on Union trying to cross to the library last week. The speed limits on Camden, Maverick, Union and Park streets are not enforced. Who really goes 25 mph?
