SOUTH THOMASTON, Maine — The long-time wharf manager of one of the largest fishermen’s cooperatives in the state was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with embezzling a large amount of money from the organization’s members.
Robert Thompson, 51, of St. George was arrested for felony theft, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Timothy Carroll. He was the wharf manager and lobster buyer for the Spruce Head Fishermen’s Cooperative.
The investigation is in its early stages and more information will be released in the future, Carroll said.
Bail was set at $35,000 cash or $100,000 surety, according to Knox County Jail. Thompson remained at the jail as of mid-afternoon Wednesday.
The cooperative, which was formed in 1972, has 80 members. According to the online business site Manta, it has estimated annual revenues of between $1 million and $2.5 million.
Telephone calls left with two board officers of the cooperative were not immediately returned.
That’s all the lobster men needed this year with the price of lobsters so low. If it is a large amount of money good luck having it paid back. A damn shame.!!!
