LYMAN, Maine — Two people were injured Saturday morning when a home-built plane crashed into trees in Lyman.
The two people on board reportedly suffered minor injuries in the crash and were taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford for treatment, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters.
He said the ultralight aircraft had taken off from Eliot and was heading to Wiscasset when it developed engine trouble. The pilot was diverting to Sanford when the plane crashed, sustaining substantial damage, he said.
Peters did not identify the people on board and efforts to contact York County officials Saturday were unsuccessful.
The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct the investigation.

Home built plane? Are they crazy? Well now guess they wont be doing that again for a little while I guess! Home built…. ????
Because we all know that non-home built aircraft NEVER have any mechanical malfunctions …..
Most likely a kit and the aircraft is required to be certified at various stages of the assembly process.
Lot’s of homebuilts flying in Maine. Most are better built, better cared for, and as reliable as one “off the shelf.” I’ve ridden in and flown several, finding them excellent flight platforms with new avionics and flight controls. You should be more concerned with all the planes flying that carry paying passengers.
As noted, these aircraft are inspected by the FAA . Before they can fly any distance, they are required to fly 40 hours for certification.
