FARMINGTON, Maine — Everything looks bright, light and new in the Mt. Blue Shopping Center where crews are working on the final touches for the grand opening of Big Lots on Nov. 16.

In between interviews and hiring employees Friday, Store Manager Rick Routhier of Greene said he’ll hold an employee orientation Monday and Tuesday before the new workers will help to start stocking shelves.

About 150 applications were received, he said. He’s hiring about 55 part-time workers to get the store started.

This is the sixth store Routhier has helped open since starting to work for the company in 2001.

With the grand opening just a week before Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, Routhier said he is not sure about extended hours for holiday shopping.

Normally the store will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays, he said.

    1. I have friends in Boston,Florida, Missouri,California, they say the economy is getting better and more importantly to them, they feel more secure about their jobs now unlike the last 4-7 years.

        1. The US stock market was down -13% at the end of Bush’s first term
The US stock market was down -31% at the end of Bush’s second term

The US stock market is up about 62% with Obama

Now, if i just looked at the stock market going up 62%, i could be persuaded that means nothing, however and as i said already , my friends in other areas of the country are telling me the economy has been getting better and they are no longer in fear of losing their jobs

This state is in a Depression, i go along with that.

    1. Lol, really? More low wage, no benefits jobs that leave the state to pay for food stamps and healthcare…just what we need!

  1. I am a big fan of Big Lots. They are sort of like a Mardens but better quality items and not just items that didnt sell elsewhere.  The stores are cleaner, more pleasant, they dont just toss the merchandise on the shelfs.
A couple of items that come to mind that i bought recently:
    Arizona southern mustard, $1….Hannfords, $2.49.
HDTV cord..$6…$10 or more at Walmart
Nabisco peanut butter cookies, $2.20…$$ at Walmart/Hannaford

ps, would it be too much for Mardens to clean and wax the floor every so often? at least once every 10 years anyways

    1.  It’s nothing special – cheaply built furniture from China, low quality pots, pans and weird close-out food.  This is the sort of place that advertises HD digital video cameras for $20 on Black Friday – then you discover that the camera is made from the same material that it comes packaged in.

      1. “cheaply built furniture from China,
        low quality pots, pans
        and weird close-out food.
This is the sort of place that advertises HD….”

True, true, true and true. I agree. But they do have quality items at lower prices than anywhere else.  And they have weird close-out ‘merchandise’ that can be appealing to some people but not all people. Coca-Cola plates, chairs, dishes.

Other items that i have seen and or bought. Double cellular comb shades, $20- 35,name brand. Home Depot that run $50-130 a window. I saw these two days ago: Eclispe curtains: $15. Curtains that get 5 stars out of 200 customer reviews on Amazon.  These curtains will  noticeably bring  down your heating bills and AC bills. As well as reduce outdoor noise. These curtains, depending on style run $25-40 a elsewhere, including at Walmart.

  2. I applied for a job at big lots in Bangor when they first opened . They told me it was $7.50 an hour 24 hours a week but could not guarantee more than 8 hours.  I would have to be on call . I said look do you have a job or not? I could not insult someone that bad.

  3. SWEET!!! More part time jobs that pay “public assistance” wages. More load on the tax payers of Maine to make up the difference. These “employees” will all be eligible for food stamps, LLIHEAP, and help with their baby sitting expenses. I wonder how many small businesses in the Farmington area will close because of this new “big box”? Anyone who thinks these guys coming to town is a good thing is blind. Now the people of Farmington will have more options on where to get their cheap Chinese crap and put more Americans out of work.

    1. Problem is if you pay the people high wages then the prices of the goods go up. Then no one will go there, big lots stuff is rejects and refurbished stuff..

      1. No, the problem is if you do not pay a living wage, the burden on the tax payer goes up. No one can survive on what these cheap skates pay without a lot of government cheese. Government cheese that you and I pay for.

    2. There are no small businesses in the Farmington area.  They all went out of business when Walmart opened.

  4. Sure wish that Big Lots done a better traffic study here in Bangor and located their store, in a better location….Very Poor location for us and we love the store.

  5. Part time, low wage work.  We used to make things in the US, now thanks to “free” trade and sweatshops, we just sell it for companies making a huge profit.

  6. For everyone complaining about this store’s low wages, etc. it’s called WORK EXPERIENCE and it’s a JOB as opposed to sitting on your duff collecting welfare.  Some people would still rather work, even at lower wages, than get handouts.
