BANGOR, Maine — There’s a little more green space on Cumberland Street now.

The 17 Cumberland St. address that used to be the location for a two-story home and adjoining garage became a large pile of rubble after a Wednesday morning demolition by a couple of excavators.

The home, which was previously owned by Clarence Veilleux, was purchased five months ago by Fallmo Inc. — a business enterprise run by Dick and Marit Cattelle — and demolished to create a green space with a couple of parking spots.

The Cattelles, who own a building next door that houses Marit’s Hairstyling salon owned and operated by Mrs. Cattelle and an apartment, said Veilleux and his wife raised their family in the home, which served as the Veilleux family homestead for a few decades.

“His wife died several years ago and he’s living at the VA Hospital in Augusta now,” said Dick Cattelle. “The house was built back in the early 1900s, I think. Half of the house was not sitting on the foundation and it was too costly for the family to maintain.”

  1. Looked and sounded really rotted and not a sign of insulation. No big architectural loss either.

  2. Excellent!  But why stop there?  There are dozens of dumps in this town that need to meet a similar fate.  Some of them happen to be apartment buildings owned by local ‘dignitaries’.

    1. Graitwick would like to see all the old buildings gone in Bangor and force all the stakeholders into condo style apts like they have in Europe..

  3. Did they rezone it as commerical prior to the demo? Just asking. Some of you know why I’m asking..
Maybe a green zone exempts them from the  law.

Yes the place needed to go.

  4. Where was the plastic draping for the lead dust?  Sure looked like more than 6 sq feet was disturbed to me. Who enforces that law? I guess we should all get out quick and do our renovations before the dust settles.

    1. Lead law doesn’t apply. This was not a renovation but a demolition. They did have to remove all asbestos prior to demolition.

      1. LOL. Yup!
I”m sure Grampy scraping his old porch causes more dust hazard than what was shown in that video, glass dust and all. And where were the hard hats and respiratory protection?
