ROCKLAND, Maine — Bail was set Monday afternoon for a 22-year-old Vinalhaven man who was arrested Friday on charges that he sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl on multiple occasions.
Nathaniel S. Small was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of gross sexual assault, four counts of unlawful sexual contact, and one count of visual aggression against a child.
The investigation began two months ago when the parents of the 6-year-old notified state police in Aroostook County that their child had informed them that Small had committed the offenses.
The child, who lives in Aroostook, is a relative of Small. The offenses occurred on Vinalhaven at a family home, according to the affidavit filed in Rockland District Court by Maine State Police Detective Jason Richards.
State police were notified Aug. 6, and on Aug. 20, state police obtained a search warrant and went to Vinalhaven to question Small. According to the affidavit, Small told police that he knew what he did was wrong and was unsure what this would do to his family.
Small admitted to performing oral sex on the child, according to the affidavit. He also told investigators he had taken sexually explicit photos of the child but had since destroyed them.
The suspect’s father told police that his adopted son Nathaniel had mental health issues. Nathaniel Small said he had attempted to find child pornography online but was able to only find adult porn.
Computers were seized but no child pornography was found, according to the affidavit.
Small was held throughout the weekend without bail at Knox County Jail. Judge Susan Sparaco set bail Monday afternoon during Small’s initial court appearance at Rockland District Court at $5,000 cash or $50,000 surety.
We all know he will get 15 years with all but 2 suspended (if that) probably out earlier due to “good behavior”

There will be no execution and with proper therapy the little girls life will not be ruined and she will grow up to be a normal and productive adult.
Let’s hope that she will grow up to be normal and a productive adult but sadly she will always have memories of this jerk doing this to her.
This is very sickening to me. We need a FEDERAL LAW protecting children. The state courts will give them what equals a slap on the hand. Give him the maximum sentence judge!
At least this guy admitted it. It will make prosecution that much easier. Confessions are usually the only thing that will guarantee a conviction.

i know the guy and his family and they are all mormons. i don’t know that much about the mormon religion but i’m guessing there isn’t anything about sex with 6 year olds. that being said, just because someone is religious doesn’t mean they might not be screwed up in the head, and vice versa; i consider myself an atheist and don’t need a 2000 year old book to tell me it’s wrong to molest children.

Bail was set??? Really?? This is a vulgar and sick crime, and this is given a chance at freedom?? As I have said in the past, the pot growers are looking at 10 years, but this individual is given bail? Something needs to change, this child will live with this for the rest of her life, while this individual will eventually be walking free…Laws need to be changed, we as the people need to push new regulations on predators, the real criminals.
I live here, but did not know him, knew of him. Very sick to say the least. Hopefully she can overcome this some how. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family…………..
