BANGOR, Maine — U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud portrayed himself as an experienced battler of Beltway gridlock who wants voters to return him to his 2nd Congressional District seat to build upon his many successes.

Kevin Raye etched himself as a Washington outsider, a conciliator in the mold of his political mentor, Republican U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, whose election would send an authentic Maine small businessman to Washington, D.C.

The East Millinocket Democrat and Republican state Senate president from Perry debated Tuesday for the first time since their first matchup almost a decade ago as part of a candidates’ forum at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel. The Bangor Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event.

The candidates displayed differing debate styles. Raye discussed his political philosophies at some length, and in personal terms. Michaud spoke more in lists of accomplishment and details. Both agreed that improving Maine’s economy is job No. 1 for whoever wins the election on Nov. 6.

Michaud said he has worked hard to make the federal government work for Maine. He touted his role in helping to create the Northern Border Trade Commission, save the New Balance shoe factory in Skowhegan, and increase truck weight limits on federal roads to aid northern Maine businesses.

Raye doubted that federal government can solve the challenges it faces.

“Washington is broken. That is a simple fact,” Raye said. He called the nation’s capitol a scene of “bitter partisanship and polarization” that drove Snowe, for whom Raye had served as a chief of staff, from office.

“There is a lack of respect and civility in Washington that is like a cancer on this nation’s [government]. People don’t talk to each other,” Raye said. “We are poised to fall off a fiscal cliff and leave this country worse off than when we found it.”

Raye worked across party lines to pass five state budgets, reduce government debt by $5.1 billion, and met weekly with state Democratic House and Senate leaders to keep bipartisanship strong, he said. Raye promised he would do the same in Washington if elected.

The federal government has an “addiction to spending and debt,” Raye said. “The economic crisis we face is as a result of debt. It is at the heart of the problems our country faces.”

Michaud said his influence helped improve veterans’ access to health care statewide, is propelling federal laws that will keep U.S. soldiers clad only in American-made clothing and supported regulations that increased loans to small businesses and lessened IRS pressure on them.

“There was a lot we were able to do to help small businesses grow that had not been done,” Michaud said.

The candidates agreed on closing U.S. military bases overseas to save money and protecting Medicare and Social Security. Michaud opposed Medicare vouchers; Raye indicated he would consider any reasonable option to guarantee that Medicare and Social Security continue.

Noting that 99 percent of Maine’s business community is small businesses, Raye said he would work to free businesses from overtaxation and overregulation. His experience of running a mustard factory with his wife gave him a great understanding of what small businesses face.

“I come from a community where fishing is a way of life. I understand the importance of saving not only the species in the ocean, but the fisherman as well,” Raye said.

The candidates will next appear on WABI-TV 5 in Bangor on Thursday, with forums scheduled for Oct. 25 and Oct. 30 on Maine Public Broadcasting Network and radio station and on a simulcast on WCSH and WLBZ in Portland and Bangor.

  1. Mike Michaud worked 29 years in the paper mill and he knows hard times.LOL Some of the highest paying jobs with benefits in the State of Maine. It had to have been rough.

    1.  I take it you never worked in a paper mill?

Most of those jobs are not easy or light duty. They earn their pay more than most.

    2. Hard Times?

      You Betcha!

Wake up at Midnight and go to bed at 4.00 pm for a week , then go to work at 4.00 pm and go to sleep at 2.00 am for a week and then go to work at 8.00 am and go to bed at 10.00 pm , then start all over again.   Many people think that when Michaud speaks he seems a little slow, anyone who has done that wacked out shiftwork for 29 years knows that he is suffering from permanent sleep deprive Jet Lagg, burnout! And what have “you” got to be “Grumpy” about Ole, Grumpygrampy?

      1. Plenty of people work hard dlbrt, and your portrayal of Michaud is more likely than not, a huge stretch.  Face it, Mike drove a forklift around, punched in and out exactly on time, worked the exact amount of minutes his union said that he had to work and got paid every week like millions of others in this country.  So now that we have that out of the way, what has Mike Michaud done for the State of Maine?  Hmm, I can’t think of a thing, can you?

        1. He kept those” Crooked Republicans” out by Taking Up the Seat!

Even if he slept through the whole time that in itself was a Great Service to the Community!

          LOL

        2. How ’bout you first learn to spell his last name right, entitled?  No wonder you repugnantcans sounds so brain dead…you are incredibly compromised in the reading comprehension department.  And the few who can read are so consumed with envy toward anyone who had a good paying union job, that all you want to do is reduce everyone else to your level of pay and ignorance.

          1. Sorry that you were offended. I apologize for not checking my spelling before posting. You are so right, us repubs (whoops, republicans, need to make sure I spell things correctly) do not know how to read, comprehend or do anything that you democrats know how to do. You are so special. Thank you.

          2. Ah, but you flatter yourself, entitled.  Nothing-repeat, nothing-from the teapublican camp is ever offensive to me, so you can keep your (typical) insincere apology.  Neither my life nor my happiness depends on approval from a group such as yours.

      2. Congressman Michaud is not slow he’s very smart ! He may be tired and over worked but I think he’s sharper, more-caring  and smarter that most numbers of congress!…. Michaud Nov 6.

        1. I agree, when he talks however , you can see the effects of 29 years of shiftwork. Like you said tired and overwork, –that is the point that I was trying to make , –not to degrade him.

      3.  Well I’m retired now. But for 15 years I worked 60 to 65 hours a week, my last 5 years I cut down to 55 hours week. I would leave home in the  morning at 6 am and many night I didn’t get home till after 9:30 pm and for the first 15 years that was six days a week. I know all about jet lag and burnout. One of the years at my job we hired 65 new people and 76 quit. It wasn’t a job for everyone. That could be why I’m Grumpy.

      4. Hooray!  I used to get so sick of hearing people say, “I’d NEVER work nights, shiftwork, holidays, doubles, etc.” in one breath and then say, “Union people make too much money.”
Stick it, every single one of you.  Your jealousy is going to consume you one of these days.

        Reclaim Maine      Vote Democrat 2012

  2. Kevin, you spent how many years in Washington with Olympia?  And that makes you an outsider?

Unfortunately, both candidates have presented anti-life positions–

        1. And let’s not forget our illustrious governor, whom Stephen King correctly identified as a “Stone brain.”

  3. Michaud’s economic contributions to Maine,,, over how many years….?

Media Mike has done nothing to help small business in Maine, and it’s not for a lack of small business attempting to work with him.

I’d rather vote for someone that knows how to create paychecks, than someone that only knows how to cash them…!

We can’t afford another term with Mike; Northern Maine needs someone that is willing to work with and meet with small business, and actually get something done.
Why do you think they call him Media Mike- because he takes all the credit for other peoples work, and actually gets nothing done…!

Small Business supports Kevin Raye for Congress-

    1. Hmm. I’m a small business owner and a Republican and I support Michaud. I know many others in the same boat as me.

      1. That’s nice, but you’re not only in the minority of Republican circles, and small business across the state, but you’re also in the minority of voters as well… :-P

      1. Do you really want to know where Mikes are….?
*In his ears, so he doesn’t have to listen to the requests for help from his district.
*In the pockets of special interest groups that don’t want any industry in Northern Maine.
        *and more…..

  4. Kevin Raye learned the political ropes from Olympia. If he’s not already in the pocket of big pharmaceutical and health insurance companies, I assume he will be. The good old US Chamber of Commerce.

  5. It is a long stretch to say Kevin is a small businessman.

Kevin and his wife Karen took over the mustard company from a relative. It was a healthy, going concern before they got there. Karen is in charge of it. Kevin is just the gladhander.

    1. Hate to tell you the Mustard Mill was not healthy and almost closed due to the closure of the fish factories who where 90% of their business.  A mill that was falling in and employees who were stealing.  Karen and Kevin turned the mill around and diversified the products.  You have no clue to what you are talking about downandeast.

  6. I have a question for Kevin Raye regarding jobs and caring for the increasing demographic of older residents in Washington County.
What exactly are you doing about the removal of long term nursing beds from Washington County?

  7. Michaud represents a continuation of the same, four-year national economic crap-sandwich that’s been served by the Left. How can anyone say they want more?!

    1. The crap sandwitch was on the table when “the left” took over the executive branch.  Sorry we have not cleaned it up fast enough for you.

      1. Are you his Press Secretary speaking for him or just someone just blowing smoke because you have a keyboard, alot of time and a poor judge of charactor?

    2. So now you want a crap sandwich served with Raye Mustard.  Forest Gump was right about you repugnantcans:  Stupid is as stupid does.

  8. Mike and the economy… You would think that a man with as much influence as he claims he has in Washington that Mill town would be a state of the art area.. If he would have used any of his so called pull the mills would have had grants and zero interest loans and he would have taken care of his people. His job is to represent the people of his district. 12 years and the mills and towns are in disrepair. Nice Job Mike.

  9. Kevin proved he can work with the other side…the legislature got alot done with both parties working together…Michaud does whatever Pelosi tells him and really does not grasp what employers have to deal with….I had a meeting with him on the hill 2 years ago and was shocked at his lack of knowledge on business and tax  issues and his spouting of talking points…other than supporting vets, which Kevin will do, he has not really done much for Maine.

  10. Michuad is just another in a long line of Democratic lap dogs in DC. Just laying aound doing nothing but barking when someone comes to the door.  It is time that Mainers wake up and get rid if this do-nothing congressman.  Ten years is long enough to show that you are effective at your job, and when you are not, well its time to be shown the door.  And by the way Mikey, don’t let that door hit you on your way out!

  11. As always politicians have a record.  By all appearences Mr. Michuad is the only one who did anything.  He along with other elected officials helped accomplish a lot of what he takes credit for.  Now if Mr. Michaud and the rest of our elected officials were the leaders that they claim to be they would desend on the rest of those do nothings in Washington DC and get to work.  But no they are out on recess or whatever they call it today and nothing is getting done.  that is what leadership is aobut getting people to work and he and they are not doing it.

  12. The idea that economic stimulus and development will happen by making it
easier for business owners, no matter how small, seems a lot like
trickle-down economic theory. If Mr. Michaud and Mr. Raye recognize the difficulty of running a small business in Maine, then I hope they will take a minute to imagine what it is like to work as an employee of those same small businesses.
This is the population that needs help.
For once, I’d like to see a politician represent the interests and needs of working people, and by that I mean workers; people who must endure long hours, low pay, few benefits, too many taxes and more often than not, abusive employers just to make a living in Maine. These are the people who spend money out of necessity and if they do better, then we all do better!

  13. Kevin Raye has done more to create jobs in Maine than Media Mike- but then again, Mike has done NOTHING to create jobs.

I’d rather vote for someone that knows how to create paychecks, than some forklift operator that only knows how to cash them…!

Better a businessman than some Obama lackey…!
