BANGOR, Maine — A transient who has had multiple run-ins with Bangor law enforcement is back behind bars, according to police.

Mark Whitmore, 52, was found intoxicated near the Penquis agency on Harlow Street Wednesday afternoon, Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

Whitmore’s bail conditions prohibit him from consuming alcohol, the sergeant said, and police were called when a Penquis employee allegedly noticed the man stumbling around drunk.

Officer Gary Decker responded, arrested Whitmore and charged him with violating conditions of release. Whitmore was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Thursday morning, Edwards said.

Whitmore’s most recent brush with police occurred on Aug. 25, when he threatened an officer who found him drunk and asleep near Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street, according to Bangor Daily News archives.

Whitmore also has assault and disorderly conduct convictions on his rap sheet, according to the BDN listings.

BDN sports freelancer Ryan McLaughlin grew up in Brewer and is a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins.

    1. Seriously??  You have got to be kidding me!  Why do they keep letting him out?  Obviously, he can’t hold up his end of the deal with his “conditional release” of not consuming alcohol. I thought the deal with conditional release was you would remain “released” as long as you met the conditions.  It sounds like he has not held up his end of the bargain, so throw him in jail and leave him there for more than a few hours…. This is ridiculous.  When is something going to be done about this?

      1. Bail conditions will do nothing to stop a hard core alcoholic from drinking once released. The man obviously needs help not jail.

        1. In a perfect world — he would get help AND jail.  I agree with you that he needs some help, and as long as he is willing and open to receive that help and try to better himself, then all the more power to him!  I wish him the best of luck moving forward, but he also needs to be held to accountable for his actions which got him to this point….

  1. When I reported a man trying to sell drugs to my 13 year old son the Bangor police did nothing. Today a few weeks latter is standing outside nest to my son’s mothers house drinking.   I think they need to make thier presents know like the use to at the store corner of Ohio and Hammond.
