WELLS, Maine — An elderly Sanford woman was killed Thursday afternoon when the car she was driving caught fire after it collided with a Jeep, police said.
Lillian Kreitman, 85, was making a turn from Littlefield Road onto Route 9 when her Buick was struck by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Justin Parker, 28, of Wells, according to Wells police Sgt. Adam Shaw.
Kreitman’s Buick was pushed from the road into a ditch, where it caught fire, the sergeant said. Witnesses tried to free her and her passenger, Lorraine Cantalupo, 85, of Massachusetts.
Rescue crews managed to free Cantalupo from the vehicle, but Kreitman could not be extricated and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Shaw.
Cantalupo was taken to Maine Medical Center, where she is listed in serious condition, Shaw said. Parker was not injured.
The accident remains under investigation.
