SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A man was arrested Thursday morning after police said they found him wandering around vehicles at Skowhegan Area High School.

Vernon Porter, 57, had an outstanding warrant for unpaid fines on a theft charge out of Penobscot County, according to Skowhegan interim Police Chief Daniel Summers.

Porter is a resident of the Trinity Homeless Shelter for men in Skowhegan, Summers said.

Around 11 a.m. Thursday, staff at the high school alerted Officer Dave Daigneault, who is Skowhegan’s resource officer, of a suspicious man wandering around vehicles in the parking lot of the school, Summers said.

When police ran Porter’s name, they discovered the outstanding warrant, for which he was arrested. Summers saidl.

No vehicles were broken into, and Porter did not have any suspicious belongings at the time of his arrest, according to Summers.

Porter remained at Somerset County Jail on Friday morning, according to a jail official.

  1. What’s up with unpaid fines in Maine?  A similar story, but about unpaid domestic violence fines, was in BDN yesterday:  http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2012/10/18/news/mid-maine/man-with-history-of-domestic-violence-offenses-arrested-again/?ref=polbeat

How about all finer are paid prior to leaving Court, or back to jail these knucklehead’s go?  The primary reason these fools re-commit crimes is because there was no punishment or not enough punishment for committing thire first 1 to 10 crimes.

    1. If they are in jail how are they going to get the money to pay the fines?  We got rid of debtors prison a long time ago.

      1.  It looks like he had no intention of paying any fines or there wouldn’t have been a warrant out for him.
